the phenomenon of no limit goons being on random late 90s r&b singles totally confounds me (see also mya's "moving on"

Brilliant thread idea. These ripoffs used to make me so angry back then. Especially when they actually had me fooled (Jordan Knight, I'm looking at you!). The double-time drums were EVERYWHERE by 1999.

this is a good thread. that fox/swv/red clay shit is crazy. i think that if this stuff wasn't so goddamn hard to mix would've already been a formal cool kid revival of this stuff or maybe there already was and it was called dubstep or something.

jermaine was a frequent offender, the most obvious example being:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQRzrnH6_HY

is this the biggest hit in the genre?

i once fell down a youtube hole of japanese timbaland knock offs from this era but now i can't find any of them. they definitely exist though.

youtubes don't really do this sound justice either fwiw.

I always thought "Nice & Slow" pulled a cool trick by putting that rhythm in the guitar instead of the drums.

since 2000 counts and since now up there was looking for Japanese stuff:

<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/dpcHPVpjBCM"; frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

I saw this video on Chinese TV the first time I was in (East) Asia in 2001 & it blew my mind. I had no idea any of this was going on (nor that it was produced by Jam & Lewis). Have loved Utada Hikaru ever since.

i have srs issue with the conflation of darkchild and timbo itt

r|t|c, Tuesday, 24 December 2013 16:40 (ten years ago) link

I assume you mean b/c most of these tunes ride that faster, bouncier groove? I suspect it caught on more because it's actually easier (though more energetic) to dance to than a "typical" Tim tune of the era because the measures more quickly, plus like soothing harpsichord or guitar hooks.

Still, Timbaland as shorthand for syncopated beats in millennial R&B is a forgivable sin IMO.

No shit, this is among my top 10 rap albums of all time... Though most of the tracks are more traditional NY boom-bap.
