Design Crimes: corporations ditching classic logos for newer logos that are duds

^don't really mind that one, but for the first time in my life I read that as "upz"/oopz

the new one isn't terrible (apart from the shineyness effect thing) but the old one is so charming.

Looks the badge a brigade of retiree gift-wrappers would pin on themselves

The old ebay logo was ugly as hell, so step in the right direction IMO. The latest Walmart logo is heinous. Friend said "it looks like a butthole" and that's all I've been able to see since.

"Slicing up freshness!" sounds like the slogan of a serial killer.

plus with the arby's thing the issue for me is that the hat is three-dimensional and rendered but the text logo is flat- what is their point? what's that about? is there some hat-as-signified / corporation-as-signifier thing going on? whatever semiotics, it mostly reminds me that a friend of mine had the theory that looking at the Arby's sign was bad luck- if we drove by certain stripmalls he would suddenly say, in a serious voice, "don't look at the hat"

Now in his honor I intone that warning everytime I see an Arby's.

Judging from their Flickr redesign, you can rest assured that there is much, much worse to come, and that the worst of all will be the final selection.

I don't hate the Flickr redesign like some people do, but I admit there's a certain amount of fun in ragging on Yahoo.

Hipsterbranding is awesome.

If only because our SU's last design team basically covered everything in that style and we mocked them for it.

This has to be one of the all-time worst - replacing a truly classic, industry-changing, universally recognized, spectacularly distinctive logo/signage with this generic, utterly forgettable POS....

c'mon you're pulling the old before/after photo trick there, everything looks great in neon.

those were actually incandescent light bulbs for many of the animated parts, which were U&K. The cost of keeping the signs lit is cited by the company as one reason they were removed.

An environmental disaster mind you, but it could be replicated nowadays using low-power LEDs for less than the fluorescent tubes in the new signs cost to run.

When i was in design class that Morton Salt thing was very much admired.

Pretty sure I know someone with a tattoo of it, in fact.

I've met at least two people with that as a tattoo

I know one.

Both of the ones I met were from or had lived in Chicago which didn't surprise me

I used that as my Livejournal user icon when I was in high school
