Srsly. "In The Park" gives me chills. And the way they bust out Grace Jones is just perfect.

Tim F, Tuesday, 11 January 2011 19:29 (thirteen years ago) link

the beats in space one is great, i was kindof obsessed w/ the soul clap remix of that jamie foxx track. wolf+lamb is a great label for fans of male diva vocal house

plax (ico), Tuesday, 11 January 2011 20:37 (thirteen years ago) link

i kinda didn't realize how much i liked these guys/this label until recently but yea. i'm loving the w + l album, the soul clap stuff, zev's "don't break it", "time for us", most everything i come across tbh

a lagoon par la mer (psychgawsple), Thursday, 13 January 2011 08:40 (thirteen years ago) link

Search: no regular play's "slide away"!

Tim F, Thursday, 13 January 2011 08:49 (thirteen years ago) link

my favourite w+l stuff

no regular play - ladyluck (slow hands remix) (i think slow hands is one to keep an eye on, i really like the auld lang syne edit he did for nye, its free on their website) zev - forget the world and dont break it, soul claps rnb edits and aphrika by seth troxler (as well as the nicolas jaar stuff)

plax (ico), Thursday, 13 January 2011 13:13 (thirteen years ago) link

the beats in space podcast makes soul clap seem like the funnest guys to hang out w/. i ended up listening to it billions of times over the last few months bc i had like 3 podcasts and a studio remix on my ipod.

one month passes...

Haven't heard the actual release yet but the radio promo mix for the DJ Kicks is lovely. "In The Park" still on track to be a top 10 single of the year for me also.

Tim F, Tuesday, 15 February 2011 21:56 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm enjoying it a lot from what I've heard.

dentarthurdent (dog latin), Tuesday, 15 February 2011 23:05 (thirteen years ago) link

loving this! whats the deal w/ these promo mixes? are they usually similar to the mix that gets released? and is half of it mixed by wolf + lamb the other half by soul clap or...?

just sayin, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 10:17 (thirteen years ago) link

I meant a promo of the DJ Kicks mix. It's more a sort of showcase of "look what our mates have made" than a Soul Clap vs Wolf + Lamb affair - both duos moving in roughly similar circles to each other. The good thing about it is that it's got W+L deep house minimalness working at the same as Soul Clap's funky italo(?) style, but it never feels disjointed as you'd probably have a hard time guessing which duo picked which tracks. It's definitely not an Immer compilation or anything like that - lots of electro and boogie-influenced stuff. Great fun at high volumes, deep and bubbly on headphones.

dentarthurdent (dog latin), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 10:58 (thirteen years ago) link

id say soul clap are digging on boogie rather than italo

plax (ico), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 11:01 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah, boogie is a better way of describing it. I'm not so hot on my late-80s/early-90s house categories admittedly.

dentarthurdent (dog latin), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 11:02 (thirteen years ago) link

idk i think its just that 80s nyc disco sound that i will <3 forever, nuyorican boogie paradise.g, loose and bassy and just coming to the boil

plax (ico), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 11:05 (thirteen years ago) link

Soul Clap also seem to love house mixes of R&B tunes from circa 1990, which makes perfect sense of course. I think they're interested in R&B as something that exists alongside house rather than as a kind of pre-house/post-disco thing.

Well, they're still disco, but more in that timeless continuum sense that embraces both house and R&B. This is what distinguishes them from, say, Metro Area, who used italo and disco as a way of creating a sense of distance from house.

It's more like what if Moodymann was really into Janet Jackson.

Tim F, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 11:12 (thirteen years ago) link

xpost
I don't know if it's just the blurb I've read about their 90s paries, but Soul Clap kind of remind me of the eurodance-ish stuff I was listening to when I first came to music as a young'un - Black Box, 49ers, Mantronix, JT & the Big Family - but much more silky and polished.

dentarthurdent (dog latin), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 11:15 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah dog latin i meant the promo as well, it's just that its called the radio promo mix, so i was just wondering if its the same thing as the official one?

just sayin, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 11:16 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah I think it's the same.

dentarthurdent (dog latin), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 11:17 (thirteen years ago) link

radio promo thing sounds excellent so far, it's cool how they more or less kept it within the w + l camp yet there is still a pretty wide range of styles going on

Can't stop listening to this, bought the unmixed tracks from Beatport. The mix works, but I like being able to let the better tracks stretch out. The Nicolas Jaar soul edit in particular is way better at 7 minutes than 2.

my opinionation (Hamildan), Wednesday, 30 March 2011 16:36 (thirteen years ago) link

as much as i appreciate the unmixed tracks i think the mixing in the dj kicks is fucking excellent. you know it's a good sign when even the transitions get stuck in your head

a lagoon par la mer (psychgawsple), Wednesday, 30 March 2011 18:01 (thirteen years ago) link

but i guess with 27 tracks there is probably a greater chance for the transition to get stuck in your head than the track itself

I love how the DJ Kicks is so classy and spacious, yet messy and fun. Is there anything coming out from this stable that isn't solid brilliance?

glad to see more love for the dj kicks, the press reaction seems like it was generally positive but i definitely was expecting more of a reaction from the indie world a la nicolas jaar or james blake. which is a bummer because it is so much better than either of those records

a lagoon par la mer (psychgawsple), Tuesday, 12 April 2011 19:32 (thirteen years ago) link

It's not an "album" though, which is what the indie crowd tends to respond to.

Sad to think that we've made so little progress in the decade-or-so since "Radio Soulwax Part 2".

Is the Wolf & Lamb album (their artist album not this DJ Kicks) any good? It's in my list of "things I'm going to download and listen to when I have a proper chance".

ha ha ha ha jack my swag (boxedjoy), Tuesday, 12 April 2011 21:27 (thirteen years ago) link

There is no such thing as progress in music

colby, Tuesday, 12 April 2011 21:29 (thirteen years ago) link

I mean in convincing people to be more open-minded... I also think the last Robag Wruhme mix compilation with the name I can't spell or pronounce would have been easy crossover material though, maybe I don't know anything.

ha ha ha ha jack my swag (boxedjoy), Tuesday, 12 April 2011 21:35 (thirteen years ago) link

You need a narrative with these things, hence the Villalobos Fabric mix getting some of that kind of press.

Number None, Tuesday, 12 April 2011 21:42 (thirteen years ago) link

Indie peeps get interested in dance music once dancing no longer seems like the central point. Hence the Field being the biggest Kompakt artist for that crowd.

Wolf + Lamb and Soul Clap are both way too connected with actual dance crowds. They've definitely crossed over with the coolsy dance types though, to the point that people complain about them getting the hype that ought to go to steffi or Tom trago or etc.

Bits of the DJ Kicks mix really remind me of 2006ish Get Physical but filtered through a post-Balearic horizontal afternoon drinking in the sunshine vibe.

this is a really good point actually...and the way they've created a way for things to be mixed together again.

Also just spent a good hour browsing about Soul Clap's website/blog, they seem to have a lot of podcasts and whatnot that can be downloaded.

Not quite on the same path musically, but they've done this amazing mix to promote a night they did a few months ago, based on 90s house sounds and just on the right side of cheesy. There's a Tuff Jam remix of Coolio (!) which sounds absolutely vicious in this context.

My attempt to get the indie world listening to Soul Clap/W+L

srsly tho, I know the Ilx doesnt dig self-promotional and kinda off topic posts, but some of you W+L/SC DJ Kicks fans should be into this mix I made and I'd appreciate any listens/feedback/love/hate to get me closer to trumping the chump that somehow has gained 2000+ plays for a (imho) pedestrian mix. i meant the wolf + lamb album, which was a p understated affair

i guess i'd argue that this thing is pretty 'pop' tbf, but it fails regardless. its problem has more to do with pretending like it has this uber-funky weirdness vibe going on, but not being even close to weird enough in actuality to pull it off. if you're going to have crazy spoken word intros that evoke dudes like andre 3000 or prince or george clinton or w/e they shouldn't be forced. and they shouldn't be this boring. i mean, lines like "a circumcised man gains powers of our universe, shaping him into a being of interplanetary dopeness" do not sell themselves

lex was right when he said this album was 'dry', p much the opposite of funk. i thought that the dj kicks thing actually achieved a nice balance of smoothness and weird-ass funkiness but this album is just blah
