2. Alexander O'Neal - "Fake"

ha this guy looks v fierce -- honestly i'm not a huge fan of a lot of the sounds of the '80s, i think this has gotten me in trouble on ilx before -- anyway, this song is pretty cool -- bass is nice, altho i think it's still a bit... chintzy on the whole -- that said, i can see easily how stuff i grew up hearing as a kid (i guess boyz II men obv, maybe even like montell jordan) was borne out of a song like this -- not explicitly in the sonics, but just generally speaking

OK for the albums rotation, it looks like it'll be:

1) the lex 2) me 3) alfred (i think? not totally clear if he was signing up 4) ilxor 5) whoever wants to go for it!

and i think generally ppl can just go in whenever j0rdan says he's ready for the next selection, or at least we'll try that unless it becomes apparent a firmer schedule would help.

btw how are we defining "album" -- a studio album or a comp of our own design?

"Fake" and "Do I Love You", both classic. great choices!

make it a theme for each 25? next 25 could be synth pop or jazz or indie or some other genre?

i think it's cool that j0rdan didn't seem v interested/steeped in older music & found moments of threads i've read where his ignorance of some unavoidable cultural cornerstone was exposed endearing. idk why but it just seems cool

flopson, Friday, 21 January 2011 01:05 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah i mean it's more gentle ribbing than "what is WRONG with you," at least as far as i'm concerned. i just think it's funny how voracious his curiosity for new/recent music is and how little that seems to extend to older music, and if that's gonna keep being a topic of discussion on different threads we may as well make kind of a game of it.

some dude, Friday, 21 January 2011 01:34 (thirteen years ago) link

3. R.B. Greaves - Take A Letter Maria

damn, i didn't expect a song that sounds like this -- this is structured really well, altho i don't loooove the chorus -- the verses are pretty immaculate tho -- reminds me of paul simon i guess \(o_O)/

hard as a markers (J0rdan S.), Friday, 21 January 2011 05:40 (thirteen years ago) link

4. debbie deb - when i hear music

i've definitely heard this song a bunch & obviously i think it's a stone cold classic -- every part of this song is basically perfect

hard as a markers (J0rdan S.), Friday, 21 January 2011 05:42 (thirteen years ago) link

5. The Supremes (70s) - Bad Weather (produced by Stevie Wonder)

stevie went ham on this one -- like the drum beat on this a lot -- lead vocal on this is pretty awesome too, showy but not loud, if that makes sense -- very nice song

hard as a markers (J0rdan S.), Friday, 21 January 2011 05:47 (thirteen years ago) link

6. tricky - hell is round the corner

i've obv seen tricky's name a ton before but never really bothered to check them (him? her?) out -- honestly can't decide if this is boring or secretly the shit -- i don't usually go for music that sounds like this, but the beat is a bit more interesting than i thought it was -- still don't really care much for the vocals -- i guess i like this song well enough but can't imagine listening to more than like 10 mins of it -- tbf this is how i feel about pretty much 95% of all uk beat music tho so

hard as a markers (J0rdan S.), Friday, 21 January 2011 05:52 (thirteen years ago) link

my fav thing abt 'take a letter maria' is how, right after dude finds out his wife has been cheating on him he boinks the secretary

7. Civilles & Cole - Pride (A Deeper Love)

there's like seven different versions of this on youtube -- this is the one i'm listening to xttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Njwp7MJf_E0 -- in any event, i outright love this -- even tho i don't know tons of it, 90s diva house as a general rule is totally my shit -- like, jock jams vol. 1 music, that was my shit when i was 9, 10 etc -- oh this gets really cool at the end w/ the vocal sample

hard as a markers (J0rdan S.), Friday, 21 January 2011 05:58 (thirteen years ago) link

8. Mint Condition - Breakin' My Heart (Pretty Brown Eyes)

hey mint condition has a vevo, good for them -- this is cool, i don't think it's spectacular by any means, tho i fuck w/ it vocally -- actually feel like if i had heard this a bunch on the radio or something i would end up thinking it was a classic -- altho i gotta say that i was hoping it would break into a searing prince guitar solo so i'm kinda disappointed w/ this cheesy ass sax solo -- the vocal bridge after this is pretty great tho

hard as a markers (J0rdan S.), Friday, 21 January 2011 06:03 (thirteen years ago) link

9. def leppard - love bites

haha... yeah idk about this one -- idk i fuck with power ballads but i guess i had to be 14?? or something...

hard as a markers (J0rdan S.), Friday, 21 January 2011 06:08 (thirteen years ago) link

lol. i picked the wrong track i think.

goole, Friday, 21 January 2011 06:09 (thirteen years ago) link

is that Pride (A Deeper Love) the same song that Aretha Franklin sang on the Sister Act 2 soundtrack? serious question, I really liked that song

i love tampon spaceship (San Te), Friday, 21 January 2011 06:11 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah Aretha remade it

The Brainwasher, Friday, 21 January 2011 06:12 (thirteen years ago) link

perfect song imo

The Brainwasher, Friday, 21 January 2011 06:13 (thirteen years ago) link

hmm now I'm curious to hear that version. loved aretha's, want to see how it started tho

i love tampon spaceship (San Te), Friday, 21 January 2011 06:13 (thirteen years ago) link

this next song is on some days my favorite song ever

*gets the power* (deej), Friday, 21 January 2011 06:15 (thirteen years ago) link

10. black ivory - mainline

hey, this is cool -- i dig this stuff, definitely -- not blowing me away or anything cuz i think i'm a sucker for, like, less tight, song oriented r&b disco, if that makes sense

hard as a markers (J0rdan S.), Friday, 21 January 2011 06:16 (thirteen years ago) link

alright i'm gonna play video games & listen to the cut copy album for a bit now

hard as a markers (J0rdan S.), Friday, 21 January 2011 06:17 (thirteen years ago) link

im not sure -- less song oriented? or more song oriented? is what u prefer

iirc the structure is intro -> verse -> chorus -> verse -> chorus -> bridge -> groove (best most awesome groove ever) -> breakdown -> final extended groove

basically a pretty structured R&B track but w/ a euphoric coda ideal for dancefloors etc

6. tricky - hell is round the corner

i've obv seen tricky's name a ton before but never really bothered to check them (him? her?) out -- honestly can't decide if this is boring or secretly the shit -- i don't usually go for music that sounds like this, but the beat is a bit more interesting than i thought it was -- still don't really care much for the vocals -- i guess i like this song well enough but can't imagine listening to more than like 10 mins of it -- tbf this is how i feel about pretty much 95% of all uk beat music tho so

tricky is one dude, a producer/rapper, though for his first two albums his ex-gf martina topley-bird provided most of the vocals so it still pretty much fit the male/female duo taxonomy that so many trip-hop acts seemed to cleave to. "hell is round the corner" is unusually rap heavy for tricky. maxinquaye is a str8 up classic, nearly god and pre-millennium tension are secretly as good but got less attention cuz they were more "difficult". everything after that is varying shades of garbage and if you see any critics saying a new tricky album is a return to form you shouldn't believe them.

hang on if you're not familiar w/the beat already i guess that means you're not familiar with 90s portishead? oh man. next week.

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Friday, 21 January 2011 08:25 (thirteen years ago) link

There's a cover/reworking of PE's 'Black Steel In The Hour Of Chaos' on the maxinquaye album that Lex mentions above if you wanna check it, goon that you are.
