idk how attached sky and their viewers are to keysy

Nobody would miss him if he went tomorrow. When have you ever, in 19 years of Premiership coverage, ever heard someone said that they liked Richard Keys, or that he was really good at his job? Until recently I don't even remember anyone saying anything particularly bad about him either.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 00:00 (thirteen years ago) link

have u ever been to norwich tho

nakhchivan, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 00:07 (thirteen years ago) link

Don't give these two a red card

Why on earth should Sky presenters Andy Gray and Richard Keys be pilloried for something they said off-air?

I would imagine their considered view that women have no business running the line at Premier League football matches would be considered utterly uncontroversial by most gentlemen of a certain age.

Come to mention it, most women of a certain age would probably agree, too.

By all accounts, the lady linesman involved is a jolly good sport and wasn’t in the slightest bit offended. All the chaps said was that she didn’t understand the offside rule. I’m not sure I understand the offside rule these days, either. And I’ve been around football all my life.

Yet we’ve had a procession of po-faced feminists feigning outrage at this alleged ‘slight’. Keys and Gray have been accused of ‘appalling and damaging sexism’. For goodness sake. I’ve heard much worse said about male linesmen, not to mention referees and their parentage being called into question.

This was a private conversation between two mates that should never have gone any further. In an age when the Prime Minister’s spokesman is hounded from office for allegedly colluding in the hacking of phone messages in his previous incarnation as a newspaper editor, why should the private thoughts of two football presenters be considered less sacrosanct than those of any other public figure?

I know the old adage that you should never say anything unguarded in front of a live microphone. But we’ve all done it.

Whatever you think of what was said, there’s more than a sneaking suspicion here that Andy Gray, at least, has been set up by someone at Sky to take a fall.

Hopefully Littlejohn is next. Is he still allowed on TV?

James Mitchell, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 06:08 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, and it's not your paid job on a football pitch to, mate. And no-one's suggested that you can't do it because of your gender, same as no-one who throws abuse at rubbish linesman (and god knows I do it every week), to the best of my knowledge, is suggesting they can't do their jobs because they are men. The amount of wilful point-missing all over the place wrt this is amazing.

I take it that article is by Littlejohn then, aye?

ailsa, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 08:48 (thirteen years ago) link

Biggest point-missing was a piece in The Times yesterday arguing that the lino didn't deserve this because she'd've'd to work twice as hard as any male lino to get where she was so should be cut a bit of slack. Fair enough - but the journo didn't even point out that she got the call right! The impression was all 'be nice to the lady, she's doing her best', which is very much not the way to counter the furore here.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 09:07 (thirteen years ago) link

xp That was by Littlejohn, yes.

James Mitchell, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 09:34 (thirteen years ago) link

btw, I'm absolutely fine with "lol women don't be understanding offside" as a meme and a joke. Anyone who's spent any time in a car with me will know I'm the world's worst at making cracks about women drivers, so it would be hypocritical of me to not laugh at anyone trotting out the old football cliche in the world. But Keys and Gray didn't sound like they were joking, and the totally undisguised disgust in Keys' voice when discussing Karren Brady was just vile unreconstructed misogyny.

I suspect Helen Chamberlain will be the patsy for the "go on, explain the offside rule then, GIRL" on Sky Sports on Saturday morning to make it all OK again.

ailsa, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 09:38 (thirteen years ago) link

It's been a pretty bad few days for his old mates in the Murdoch empire but, wow, Littlejohn is shook.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 10:02 (thirteen years ago) link

I notice "lol, we've all done it, what can you do, eh?" wasn't to the forefront of what passes for Littlejohn's mind when Gordon Brown's private thoughts were accidentally broadcast to the world.

Andy Gray was in the High Court last week suing Murdoch's News of the World. Leaked audio and footage on Saturday.

Must be a coincidence.

James Mitchell, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 10:58 (thirteen years ago) link

Feel so sorry for the lino having her drunken facebook pictures plastered all over the papers, as if that has anything to do with anything. Pretty much anyone in the modern world could be treated like shit just by having one drunk night where their friend had a camera.

David Lister drags up a completely unrelated incident to bash footballers as not only sexist but anti-semitic too. “Hearing both footballers and football commentators off-screen can be a shock to the system… [Matt Le Tissier] caused collective jaw-dropping [once saying] ‘I always enjoyed playing at White Hart Lane,’ mentioning the ground of Tottenham Hotspur, whose Jewish fans make up a large proportion of its support. ‘It was the only place where I felt I didn’t have a big nose.’ He was followed by Richard Keys, who gave one of the most witless and sexist speeches I have heard… Keys remarked that he had once glimpsed Cherie at a function. He grimaced, made noises of disgust and wondered aloud how on earth Blair could be attracted to her.”

supply 'n d-man (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 25 January 2011 11:11 (thirteen years ago) link

The front of the Sun has one of her facebook snaps with the headline "get 'em off" (referring, obviously, to the much smaller pictures of Keys and Gray). Ugh.

ailsa, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 11:23 (thirteen years ago) link

And yes, being outraged at the Sun being offensive is like being outraged at the actual sun daring to rise in the morning, I know.

ailsa, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 11:24 (thirteen years ago) link

see, what Le Tiss has done there is made a joke, and not a bad one. Keys on the other hand, that doesn't seem to be a joke at all, though he probably thinks it is. It's actually the problem with mainstream telly coverage in a nutshell, albeit usually they stick to cynicism rather than tipping into abuse.

a couple of my jewish friends have made 'big nose' jokes about themselves but to do it indiscriminately runs too great a risk of a) offence and b) falling into the ken of genuine antisemitism, so on balance, one shouldn't praise such behaviour on ILX, even if one is attempting to see it in context

nakhchivan, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 12:04 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm really trying to be all about the equanimity atm - there are some things though where zero tolerance is probably for the best, including racial discrimination. The only context where it's acceptable, as I said, is the one where rhetorical guns are turned on oneself, so yeah, nakh otm, but don't hate on IK - hate on the fact such dull and unfunny stereotypes continue to be bandied, and such prejudices continue to be upheld - the eventual aim is to kill prejudice by loving the people, is it not?

that's fair enough lj, and yeah i usually advise more equanimity and less stridency, so this thread is something of a reversal of types

you aren't pious but you do eat lunch very early

nakhchivan, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 12:10 (thirteen years ago) link

I dunno, I dislike a lot of people. Not because of their different races, religions, gender or sexuality (maybe class if i'm honest). "loving" is a stupid idea. Just understand that people are born differently but that in reality it isn't that important on how they act or work or think and then if you understand that, you will hopefully know that there is no need to be a dick.*

His grandson, David Sharpe, was added to the club’s board on Christmas Eve and the common suspicion is that he will take over as chairman in the next year or so. Yet Sharpe is in his early 20s and it isn’t easy to understand what qualifies him for the position other than having a wealthy granddad. Sharpe was initially in charge of the family restaurant, Sharpy’s, outside Wigan’s ground before it was boarded up last year because of a lack of customers, costing Whelan £1.3m in the process. For Wigan it could be a long way back.
