"There isn't anything under the sun that's new, so you can't really invent anything yourself," continued Hughes, who also credits his mustache with influencing the band's direction. "I'd rather be compared to someone I love than try to make something different. I just want to make Little Richard proud. And I don't think that's a bad goal. Sometimes you get a bunch of these tough-guy rocker bands who're pretending they've invented something, and it just turns into a giant boy party with a bunch of sweating dudes crammed into a little rock space bobbing up and down. That's not fun and sexy. Hopefully people will remember the ladies are what rock and roll is all about."

The Devil can do no wrong.

Loved the first one, haven't heard the new one yet but it's on my pile at the store. Friends who I know who have heard it said it's disappointing. The last QOTSA disc was, so I can see that. Hope not though.

"We didn't come here to save whales. We came here to make a little money — and save whales, too, if we can," he said, which explains how the band's songs have ended up in Budweiser and Payless ads. "This ain't no Bible study. It's rock and roll. And [when Death by Sexy hits stores], I am expecting riches beyond my wildest dreams and bikini girls every night, because it's sex rock and I made it for ladies everywhere."

They are The Eagles of Death Metal? You mean, smooth production, smooth and beautiful vocal harmonies and country rock influences? :)

I liked the immediacy of the first recording quite a bit and found that only about half of this record shared in such glorious simplicity of songcraft. The rest of the disc meandered sounding like something the Violent Femmes might have done, but with the quirkiness sounding forced to these ears.

i'm with you on that...LtP leaves me pretty 'meh'd out. it's sad when the import version's by far preferable (in large part due to the cover of "Precious and Grace!".
that said, this new EoDM has me hooked. it's some wonderful spring/summer music!
nothing to think about, just enjoy. maybe that's what people don't like about them (ie- the 'novelty act'), it's nothing to think about just dumb fun.
but, honestly, don't we all need some dumb fun as sung by Ned Flanders Gone Wrong?!!?
well, maybe not all, but I DO!

i want Dessert Sessions, please. w/ coffee.

It's being widely reported that among the attacks in Paris tonight, one target was the Bataclan, where the Eagles of Death Metal were performing a show. There's no further information at present beyond claims that a hostage situation is happening.

Oh man, how sad
There's something about this happening at this particular band's show, like just the sheer arbitrary horror of life, like a band that doesn't even really take itself particularly seriously is more forever tied to an event that I fear will have profound consequences

Comme Si, Kamasi (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Saturday, 14 November 2015 23:01 (eight years ago) link

Christ - I can't bring myself to read much more of this stuff. just horrifying. I'm hoping any video that did get uploaded gets taken down - out of respect.

lots of people showing their ass out there too - not that I'm shocked that everyone can't just mutually agree this is a horrible tragedy and offer their condolences like a normal human being (outside of this board, naturally)

There's something particularly heartbreaking about that setlist, how you can be watching a not-even-particularly-prominent and basically non-political rock band who you would never in themselves consider to be a target, and they're playing some dumb Duran Duran cover, and maybe you recognise it and laugh along, or maybe it actually sounds pretty cool, and then five minutes later. Fuck.

They and their fans were just (hugely, tragically) unfortunate enough to have been at the Bataclan on the same night as the France-Germany match, which surely was the decider timing-wise. I doubt ISIS had much of an opinion on the Eagles of Death Metal per se.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 18 November 2015 19:05 (eight years ago) link

Make sure to read the comments, in which conservative Christian nutbag Rod Dreher explains that while the Eagles of Death Metal's song "Kiss the Devil" may well have inspired the terrorists to attack, the Rolling Stones' "Sympathy for the Devil" is A-OK, 'cause it's based on litrachoor (plus, the Stones are awesome).

Jesse Hughes: I saw fear fall like a blanket on the whole crowd and they fell like wheat in the wind—the way you would before a god. I was totally alert from the very beginning. The first thing I needed to do was find my girl. Fear took a backseat and “where’s my girl?” took over.

so did he ever find his daughter? hope she's ok.

yes, sorry for not being clear! i was referring to the backdoor being propped open, the security acting suspicious, letting people in. i also have empathy for him, can't imagine what he's going through, and beyond the details of what happened and what he saw happen at the bataclan, it's pretty, well, outlandish...

Whiney G. Weingarten, Tuesday, 27 March 2018 02:33 (six years ago) link

I have moved on from trying to apologize for this dude and maybe give him a little time after his traumatic experience. I can't listen to EODM at all any more. They were lighthearted and fun-ish, but certainly not indispensable. This time around I'm kinda pissed at Dave Catching, who otherwise seems like a levelheaded, chill, lefty kinda dude, for not speaking out when Jesse opens his fool yap.

Your post inspired me to comment on the Tweet from Lanegan saying as much. Dave doesn't have a Twitter I could find but I did tag the studio. Which then liked it. So... Maybe a conversation has or will take place.

Cheers, Mark. It would be nice if Dave Catching had a word or three with Jesse. I don't know either of them personally but as far as I can tell, Dave doesn't seem like the type who would agree with Jesse here and is in a good place to tell him as well. cc: @ranchodelaluna

three years pass...

Boy looking up at Mark Lanegan's tweet there feels a bit chilling. The more so because according to this Jesse wouldn't have known about his passing because...

“The love of my life is going to die.” Eagles of Death Metal's Tuesday Cross has been in a coma for more than six weeks, and her frontman fiancé Jesse Hughes is alleging he's been blocked from seeing or communicating with her. https://t.co/qMbJCVU9OX

— billboard (@billboard) March 11, 2022

Ned Raggett, Friday, 11 March 2022 04:55 (two years ago) link

Actually change that, read it totally wrong -- I thought HE was in the coma.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 11 March 2022 04:55 (two years ago) link

Also, since I was wondering:

Although the hospital’s response does not indicate this, Hughes says Cross also tested positive for COVID, and he was told that hospital visits from family and friends were not permitted because of the risk of spreading the virus.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 11 March 2022 04:57 (two years ago) link

On the afternoon of Jan. 23, Hughes says he and Cross had cuddled on the couch in their bungalow-style home in LA’s Atwater Village as she puffed a few times on the inhaler she used to treat her asthma. She was exhausted from graffiti tagging the past few nights, and the spray-paint vapor had given her a slight cough.

Cross was “in full cardiac arrest” when ER doctors got to her and that Hughes “reported the patient had recently been smoking crack or meth.” Hughes claims that he didn’t know if she was on drugs but wanted to be safe.

in June 2021, Cross signed a document giving him power of attorney over her health care after a similar incident landed her in Glendale Memorial.

Add all that to COVID diagnosis (and assuming that she is/was as anti-vax as Jessie), this seems like a tragic, but probably avoidable outcome. I just feel bad for any of her friends and loved ones who are trying to navigate this while simultaneously having to deal with Jesse Hughes - The Human Drama Bomb.
