I'm another one who would have voted B15 Project, and it's a pity that Wookie's "Battle" got missed. (Also, where's Lonyo "Summer Of Love" and Tru Faith & Dub Conspiracy "Freak Like Me"?)

Anyhow, I'm voting for the super-smooth old-school "Sincere".

mike t-diva, Monday, 11 February 2008 10:57 (sixteen years ago) link

I still don't really 'get' 2-step but Moving Too Fast is an astonishing record, better than anything else here by a mile.

Matt DC, Monday, 11 February 2008 11:01 (sixteen years ago) link

"Sweet Like Chocolate" because it's one of the great number ones and also the record Madonna should have made in 1999.

Dingbod Kesterson, Monday, 11 February 2008 11:05 (sixteen years ago) link

I also missed out the Mis-Teeq laydeez. Maybe someone with a better memory than me should redo this poll.

chap, Monday, 11 February 2008 12:20 (sixteen years ago) link

Neighbourhood and Battle weren't really chart 'hits' were they?

DJ Mencap, Monday, 11 February 2008 12:23 (sixteen years ago) link

Oxide & Neutrino's "Up Middle Finger" was a hit tho, would've liked the chance to think about voting for that before voting for "Flowers" anyway. "Movin' Too Fast" was probably my number 2.

Noodle Vague, Monday, 11 February 2008 12:37 (sixteen years ago) link

I totally get 2 Step but hate 'Moving Too Fast', oddly.

blueski, Monday, 11 February 2008 12:45 (sixteen years ago) link

Neighbourhood and Battle weren't really chart 'hits' were they?

#25 and #10 respectively

blueski, Monday, 11 February 2008 12:47 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah Mis-Teeqs are missing, as are "Out Of Your Mind" and "Bodygroove" and "Gotta Get Thru This", and I'd say "Fill Me In" belongs here too.

I've voted for "Flowers" but it's a very near thing obv.

Tim F, Monday, 11 February 2008 12:48 (sixteen years ago) link

like:
Re-Rewind - Artful Dodger
Woman Trouble - Artful Dodger
Please Don't Turn Me On - Artful Dodger
Sincere - MJ Cole
Straight From the Heart - Doolally
Bound For Da Reload - Oxide & Neutrino (but hated at the time becuz thought it was cheap and dated!)
Sweet Like Chocolate - Shanks & Bigfoot
I'll Bring You Flowers - Sweet Female Attitude

no like:
Movin Too Fast - Artful Dodger
Think About Me - Artful Dodger (don't remember this tho)
TwentyFourSeven - Artful Dodger (ditto - was it the one with Mel All Saints?)
Crazy Love - MJ Cole
A Little Bit of Luck - Luck & Neat
Master Blaster - Luck & Neat
No Good 4 Me - Oxide & Neutrino
Do You Really Like It - DJ Pied Piper

blueski, Monday, 11 February 2008 12:52 (sixteen years ago) link

I tended to like what degree of male soul (as opposed to the MC-led stuff) element there was to 2 Step, as if a wilful contrary reaction to the perceived 'girliness' otherwise abundant.

blueski, Monday, 11 February 2008 12:54 (sixteen years ago) link

Surprised about Battle (re chart positions), recall it as yer typical underground smash that didn't actually cross over to the charts. I could always look these things up before posting, but hey ho

DJ Mencap, Monday, 11 February 2008 12:55 (sixteen years ago) link

it doesn't seem like it was as big (at least chartwise) as it was tho yes

blueski, Monday, 11 February 2008 12:57 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah I didn't like "Bound For Da Reload" much at the time either - I don't think it sounds much like an MC record, although the version without the "Casualty" sample does more (and is superior - or at least is the version that got me into the tune).

Loved "Oh No" and "No Good 4 Me" immediately though.

I'm probably the only person here who likes "Master Blaster".

Tim F, Monday, 11 February 2008 13:09 (sixteen years ago) link

i like 'Devil's Nightmare'. gothstep deserved a better chance.

blueski, Monday, 11 February 2008 13:20 (sixteen years ago) link

Heh, Sweet Female Attitude are doing a live PA of 'Flowers' in my wonderful home town this Thursday. Sunship are playing as well!

Back To '00!

blueski, Monday, 11 February 2008 16:33 (sixteen years ago) link

Are you going to go? You should go.

chap, Monday, 11 February 2008 16:34 (sixteen years ago) link

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 00:01 (sixteen years ago) link

You should go, Mencap. I should imagine it would be tremendously melancholic, in its way, after all this time.

In practically any other circumstances I'd have voted for "Sweet Like Chocolate". "A Little Bit of Luck" is also wonderful, but what chance did it stand in this company?

and "girls like us" and "destiny"

but now that i look at this, it looks like maybe this poll is just for 2-step that got on the UK pop charts?

Tim F, Wednesday, 12 January 2011 09:20 (thirteen years ago) link

This is a case of music I really really didn't like at the time, but now I have quite a fondness for.

Speed Garage blew up about the time I started uni, as a shy, dorky schmindie/IDM virgin from the suburbs, yet to understand the appeal of club culture and dance music in general. Essex Uni wasn't much different to Stevenage in its qualitative range of nightspots, and the first person to play me garage music was this TOTAL DICK in our student halls who dobbed on us for smoking weed. Sooner or later Craig David and the Artful Dodger were being played all over the shop, but I found garage a bit too too slow and silky for me, finding trance a bit easier to jump around to on student nights.

I associated the music with the twattiest of student types - the most horrible proley consumer-fetishist, Breezer-drinking, proudly apolitical tossers.

Maybe it was a problem with me, or the surroundings I was in, but I I still find 1999-2000 a really difficult era of music to love - Nu Metal's Tom Green fratboy extreme sportz mindset, Moby's defanged coffeetable electronica, Ibiza's tits'n'booze brashness, "indie" turning into AOR bilge like Travis or the blandly retrospective Hives, Macy Gray... It was generally horrific, so no wonder I spent the most part of those years making my own music and listening to the Warp back catalgoue.

Then I left uni and remember really liking 21 Seconds (maybe the last big 2-step hit?). I've since had time to distance myself and mature and become more open to other things. Gonna go back and listen to all these, and get nostalgic about those first awkward moments on the Colchester dancefloor.

Tim F, Tuesday, 31 May 2011 00:27 (twelve years ago) link

No. I'm basically totally ignorant about dance music from before I got into dance music.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 31 May 2011 00:30 (twelve years ago) link

I must correct this. The Gabriel remix is a pretty good indicator of the sound of much of the mix.

Coochy Coo the X-Men Remixes 12"
a review by gareth metford of
release format Coochy Coo the X-Men Remixes 12" by En-Core (CD Album)

text
For pop music, the gothic has proved both an enduring source of imagery and, more importantly, a repository of moods unattainable without reference to that sense, articulated so cogently by H.P. Lovecraft, that "human laws and interests and emotions have no validity or significance in the vast cosmos at large". In dance music, it was largely the advent of electronics which enabled producers to begin to access the gothic stance: from Jamie Principle's shell-shocked 'Baby Wants to Ride', which posits both love and God as fictive elements in "a fascist dream", to Dom & Roland's scouringly bleak future-world schematics, its materialist, anti-soul aesthetic has been a frequent visitor to clubland ever since. X-men's 2-step remixes of 'Coochy Coo', originally a rather mundane four-to-the-floor stomper which would not sound out of place on daytime Radio 1, reside squarely in this tradition. Both their 'Club Mix' and their 'Dancefloor Dub' revolve around a slithery, sub-centric bassline pinioned by an ominous arpeggiated synth refrain, seemingly lifted directly from one of John Carpenter's DIY horror soundtracks. However, it is the vocals which really trip one up: drenched in breathy atmospherics, they slip and slide, flicker and blur with an expressiveness one does not really expect from UK garage, sounding at times more akin to Swans' Jarboe or Dead Can Dance's Lisa Gerrard than the usual mellifluous R&B divas. In speaking so powerfully of an individual human subject, they recall Marx's assertion that human emancipation begins with a rejection of religion's doctrine of ineffable spirit - with the understanding that, to quote Lovecraft again, "matter, it appears, really is exactly what 'spirit' was always supposed to be."
