i find jian deplorable. he's a solid interviewer, but he's just not critical of anything. his tastes are so MOR and if something strikes his fancy he'll just go on and on about how great it is.

yeah that's about what I expected from him. BUT before you criticize him, on average how "hard-hitting" are Canadian radio hosts on average anyway?

Ha, I loved "Stuck in the 90s" when it came out. I can't listen all the way through now, sorry.

I disliked Moxy Fruvous but think Jian is a good host. His endless sympathy for people comes off very well toward artists who are oftentimes met with cynicism in other quarters. He teased out a good interview from Vampire Weekend, for example. And handled himself admirably against Billy Bob Thornton's outright hostility.

i would say george strombo has a better presence and asks some deeper questions, although sometimes he sidesteps them entirely. he's a bit inconsistent that way, but i like his personality a lot better than ghomeshi.

gross. the only one i can tolerate is "the drinking song" and even then, it's far better when covered by miscellaneous celtic pub bands than their own version (and it helps that you be drunk yourself.)

Does a boring general affairs/entertainment show on Saturday mornings on CBC. It's like the Globe and Mail Review section in audio form.

one year passes...

I now have their live album. For some reason I thought there would be a bunch of new stuff but it turns out that this here is a band that has track indexes for stage banter. I was hoping they actually had a song called "Kasparov vs. Deep Blue". What struck me about the whole thing was how incredibly beautiful/tearjearking "The Drinking Song" is compared to, oh, every other song they've ever done besides maybe "Fly".

two years pass...
eleven months pass...

Question: in "King of Spain," do you imagine that the singer in fact is the King of Spain as he claims, or are we meant to take it as an ingratiating deception/Mitty-esque fantasy of the humble pizza-worker, Zamboni driver and turf-vacuumer?

/guy jamming with Moxy Fruvous?

Well, clearly that is a fantasy to which no average Joe could possibly aspire. Let's be realistic here.

He claims that his royal life was all recorded on video, suggesting that he could prove it is true if challenged.

Possibly, although one doubts he hauled all his VHS-C cassettes out of the royal chambers at his palatial palace. Likely, his peasant friend would still have them.
