Why was the Genesis called the Mega-Drive everywhere else than America?

kingfish hobo juckie (kingfish 2.0), Friday, 2 December 2005 22:17 (eighteen years ago) link

The Sega Mega Drive/Sega Genesis was a 16-bit video game console released by Sega in Japan (1988), North America (1989), Europe (1990) and most of the rest of the world as the Mega Drive. It debuted under the name "Genesis" in North America, as Sega was unable to secure legal rights to the Mega Drive name in that territory.

But "MegaDrive" doesn't lend itself to "ABACAB" puns so easily!

i'm shocked that you never played it, curtis! this game was huge for me when it came out, though obviously if you showed it to me now I would probably vomit on you and maybe attempt to chew off your orbital bones.

i found out about this game due to the local comic shop/game rental owner guy being a big fan of giant robot games, and suggesting this to me after I'd already played Front Mission 3.

It is good to know that I have spawned the first random googler beachhead for ILG. I feel proud and victimized at the same time.

When are they going to re-release this thing?

I still have fond memories of this. It's amazing that I finished it. I played through a borrowed copy on a borrowed PS1 from an AF buddy when we were living in the same barracks building (311 TRS J Flight forever, man). If a $29.99 app store version came out I would buy it tomorrow just to try and remember how the hell all the plot points were threaded together. Back in the golden age when every JRPG was stone sci-fi trope soup that ended up being about the Demiurge, and that was okay, this one still did it the best. Except for FFT, but I never did finish that one.

why not on PS4?

SFTGFOP (El Tomboto), Thursday, 16 March 2017 00:19 (seven years ago) link

In December 2015, Sony added PlayStation 2 backward compatibility and republished some PS2 games such as Dark Cloud
