Bits of the DJ Kicks mix really remind me of 2006ish Get Physical but filtered through a post-Balearic horizontal afternoon drinking in the sunshine vibe.

this is a really good point actually...and the way they've created a way for things to be mixed together again.

Yes they were pretty fantastic - I think we recorded the whole 4+ hours.

Lots of fresh sounding DJ-Kicksy material rubbing up against Glass Candy, Depeche Mode and Madlib, amongst others.

Also just spent a good hour browsing about Soul Clap's website/blog, they seem to have a lot of podcasts and whatnot that can be downloaded.

Not quite on the same path musically, but they've done this amazing mix to promote a night they did a few months ago, based on 90s house sounds and just on the right side of cheesy. There's a Tuff Jam remix of Coolio (!) which sounds absolutely vicious in this context.

i've been getting a lot of good mileage out of the 5 years at the marcy mix since it came out... it's a hell of a lot of fun

I was at the U Street show too, they always seem to have such a great time playing! Please let us know when you up that recording

erschloraque, Monday, 9 May 2011 13:50 (twelve years ago) link

Whe recording came out well from a technical standpoint, now we've got to edit it and get their approval before sending it into the wild. I'll post it here if & when we do!

They put out their own podcast (Wolf and Lamb radio) where they sporadically put out mixes or live sets from people on the label. I think my fave is an old one Zev live at the Bunker which was one of my intros to them. Totally worth checking out.

that Marcy 5 Yr mix sounds pretty shit as far as encoding/quality goes. is there a better copy than the one posted above?

really like that warpaint remix from the essential mix

I know there's some talk of Night Plane over on the techno/house thread but it's definitely worth mentioning him as one to watch. "Str8 2 Ur Heart" is noir-Balearic excellence and his Soundcloud has a lot of promising stuff on it.

The Nightplane track on the Social Experiment mix ("Parallel Lines") sounds awesome in that context. As does Benoit & Sergio's "Principles".

Tim F, Wednesday, 11 May 2011 22:57 (twelve years ago) link

I don't see it mentioned upthread, but I may have mentioned in the Mark E,Revenge Slo Motion House thread last year, anyway The Soul Clap XLR8R mix from 2010 is still fully awesome:

glad to see more love for the dj kicks, the press reaction seems like it was generally positive but i definitely was expecting more of a reaction from the indie world a la nicolas jaar or james blake. which is a bummer because it is so much better than either of those records

My attempt to get the indie world listening to Soul Clap/W+L

srsly tho, I know the Ilx doesnt dig self-promotional and kinda off topic posts, but some of you W+L/SC DJ Kicks fans should be into this mix I made and I'd appreciate any listens/feedback/love/hate to get me closer to trumping the chump that somehow has gained 2000+ plays for a (imho) pedestrian mix. Thanks!

(or just DL the slightly tighter version from sndcld and dont say anything; either way hope you enjoy)

eight months pass...

If you've ever wanted to hear Mel Blatt from All Saints sing "Everybody's Gotta Learn Sometime" over a smooth piano-house track with percussion not disimilar to Salt-N-Pepa's "Push It", then the Soul Clap album is for you.

boxedjoy, Sunday, 26 February 2012 14:23 (twelve years ago) link

she's on another track too that i like better. the press release about how they met is kind of hilarious. i was mostly disappointed by the album though, kind of dry, punctuated by unfortunate wackiness

lex pretend, Sunday, 26 February 2012 16:06 (twelve years ago) link

i have to hear this, i really like the idea of soul clap making a divisive pop opus

psychgawsple, Monday, 27 February 2012 07:17 (twelve years ago) link

not pop enough for that :(

lex pretend, Monday, 27 February 2012 08:17 (twelve years ago) link

seems like a far cry from the wolf + lamb album tho, right?

psychgawsple, Monday, 27 February 2012 08:19 (twelve years ago) link

you mean the w+l dj kicks? i haven't listened to that since this time last year and it didn't leave a huge impression on me

lex pretend, Monday, 27 February 2012 08:22 (twelve years ago) link

i meant the wolf + lamb album, which was a p understated affair

i guess i'd argue that this thing is pretty 'pop' tbf, but it fails regardless. its problem has more to do with pretending like it has this uber-funky weirdness vibe going on, but not being even close to weird enough in actuality to pull it off. if you're going to have crazy spoken word intros that evoke dudes like andre 3000 or prince or george clinton or w/e they shouldn't be forced. and they shouldn't be this boring. i mean, lines like "a circumcised man gains powers of our universe, shaping him into a being of interplanetary dopeness" do not sell themselves

lex was right when he said this album was 'dry', p much the opposite of funk. i thought that the dj kicks thing actually achieved a nice balance of smoothness and weird-ass funkiness but this album is just blah

anyone heard the soul clap fact mix?

http://soundcloud.com/mixfeed/soul-clap-fact-mix-324-04-12

can't tell if i like this or hate it. fucking despise that "get low (incoming bitch)" track though, jesus. sounds like if limp bizkit made house music, not least with them roaring over the mic in any previous set i've heard it in.

some good stuff on here, though it's way closer to jazzy jeff's mixes than any of their previous stuff.

I'm going to allow this! (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 11 April 2012 13:05 (twelve years ago) link

This Soul Clap album isn't exactly unpleasant but kinda dull at the same time? Like it simultaneously feels halfhearted and like it's trying way too hard.
