yeah gerling did used to be indiepop... i liked them then when i was indiepop too. i was obsessed with the josh abrahams remix of 'enter space capsule' (surprisingly i didnt think much of the avalanches remix at all and found it curious when gerling said 'avalanches are the best band in the world ever' only to get sucked in completely later on), which is pretty (and) twee. i also liked the version of ghost patrol with a japanese girl singing on it, and the children of etc. album. i never really connected with anything before or after that era of gerling. theoretically i should love dust me selecta but it just leaves me thnking meh. one of the huge problems w gerling is the singer(darren?) - his voice is mediocre so then his snideness becomes a bit intolerable. the other problem is that when they decide to do a style they copy that other sound so carefully and completely that they end up sounding like a shoddy version of 'the real thing' instead of having their own sound. it might have something to do with lyrics too. but maybe this is just me thinking of carob as a bad chocolate substitute instead of having its own unique flavour. i kinda enjoy 'blood on the microphone' (the rapture copyist song), especially the cut up chorus, but simultaneously feel that same gerling repulsion as i always do now.

bob snoom, Monday, 10 November 2003 13:11 (twenty years ago) link

i didnt really nail what it is about gerling up there

minna (minna), Monday, 10 November 2003 13:20 (twenty years ago) link

i thought that Sonic Animation 'I'm The DJ' track was mildly amusing, bah

stevem (blueski), Monday, 10 November 2003 13:24 (twenty years ago) link

thanks colin :)
but i am left unsatisfied...

minna (minna), Monday, 10 November 2003 13:29 (twenty years ago) link

What was missing do you think?

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Monday, 10 November 2003 13:33 (twenty years ago) link

actually - it might be a lot better if i left that carob thing out - the carob thing doesnt make sense!!

and his voice....there's snideness yes, and there's something else too. copped attitude?
and sometimes he sounds like he's trying to be sincere but you have no idea why cos the lyrics arent saying anything at all really

minna (minna), Monday, 10 November 2003 13:37 (twenty years ago) link

Ah. I liked the carob thing.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Monday, 10 November 2003 13:43 (twenty years ago) link

This band are hit & miss, for sure. I saw them at the Melbourne Big Day Out in 2001 and thought they were heaps of fun. Then I saw them again at Livid last year and thought they were terrible. Even the acid didn't help.

I do like the last track on 'Who's Your Daddy' though. They're totally unreliable, but Gerling do have their moments.

Stephen Stockwell (Stephen Stockwell), Monday, 10 November 2003 13:53 (twenty years ago) link

Actually, I'm generally prepared to grant more slack for these acts that only haphazzardly deliver the goods on the odd occassion - they remind me of myself. What could be more Australian?

Stephen Stockwell (Stephen Stockwell), Monday, 10 November 2003 13:58 (twenty years ago) link

That's true.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Monday, 10 November 2003 13:58 (twenty years ago) link

yeah i like it too colin but surely you can tell i was just looking for an excuse to use my carob analogy whether or not it fit properly

Ok, I'm late. I've only heard one song but I love it. So I thought I'd let you all know about that.

The "lah-dee-la-dah" vocal over the breaks in Enter Space Capsule" is one of the most uplifting noises i ever heard

BenTyler, Thursday, 3 May 2007 11:16 (seventeen years ago) link

which one? (to grozart)

energy flash gordon, Thursday, 3 May 2007 12:05 (seventeen years ago) link

I think it's called "Hi-Jackers Manual"

the next grozart, Thursday, 3 May 2007 12:07 (seventeen years ago) link

i still really love a couple of the things these guys did - the 'enter space capsule' remix, most of when young terrorists.... never heard a peep from their last record, though.

haitch, Thursday, 3 May 2007 13:22 (seventeen years ago) link

*GASP* A GERLING THREAD?!??!

"High Jacker's Manual" is absolutely amazing and the "Enter Space Capsule" remix is amazing too. And "The Deer In You". And "Hot Computer". Bad Blood!!! is very enjoyable as well but it went sorta indie-dancepunky. Children of Telepathic Experiences is really good too, and it's more dance-musicy than their later stuff (the trumpet in "Suburban Jungle Sleeping Bag" gets me every fukken time). I think When Young Terrorists... just might be their all-around best album.

I so wish they'd tour the US. Last time they did I was totally unavailable :-(

six years pass...

Hey does anyone have copies of those "Suburban Jungle Sleeping Bag" remixes by M0unt Fl0r1da (who btw is st1rm0nst3r)? I discovered that these exist and my mind is blown and I NEED TO HEAR THEM NOW

ugh why isn't Gerling on Spotify

No idea who would be managing the catalogue.

I just googled and at least some of Darren's current band Jep & Dep is up there, if you want to listen to it like "new Gerling!!!!!!!" and then turn it off angrily like "wtf is this mournful goth-country rubbish"

glandular lansbury (sic), Monday, 7 March 2016 23:13 (eight years ago) link

Just listened to them on Spotify, having felt compelled to refresh my memory on seeing they had a thread! I guess licensing matters are more straightforward within Aus...

Maximum big surprise! (Nag! Nag! Nag!), Tuesday, 8 March 2016 05:51 (eight years ago) link
