yeah, man, if anything, Gillespie's ideas are way more 'dangerous' as far as I'm concerned.

(and yeah, he's a dumbass. It's part of his charm.)

roger adultery (roger adultery), Saturday, 7 August 2004 17:42 (nineteen years ago) link

Bobby G has never idolised or even mentioned Stalin.
His father was a trade unionist and those views of Gillespie's are very common in the Glasgow "red clydesiders" area. None of them espoused stalinism...

Rock bastard, Saturday, 7 August 2004 17:44 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm not sure exactly how much Bobby has sided with Stalin. Surely not as much as Robert Wyatt, who I've never seen picked up on it.

I was just saying that Communism can be advocated much more comfortably by humanists than Fascism, since the former doesn't involve hatred of necessity.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Saturday, 7 August 2004 17:44 (nineteen years ago) link

But which one resonates with more evil in our current political climate? Which ideology is more dangerous right now? Communism or plain old American bigotry?

roger adultery (roger adultery), Saturday, 7 August 2004 17:47 (nineteen years ago) link

Since POAB has all the nukes right now, I'd pick that.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Saturday, 7 August 2004 17:48 (nineteen years ago) link

haha - ts: whigs vs. wahhabism

cinniblount (James Blount), Saturday, 7 August 2004 17:48 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm not talking 'sides' - i'm talking ideology.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Saturday, 7 August 2004 17:50 (nineteen years ago) link

haha - you're playing dodgeball dude

cinniblount (James Blount), Saturday, 7 August 2004 17:50 (nineteen years ago) link

poorly

cinniblount (James Blount), Saturday, 7 August 2004 17:50 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm pretty sure Gillespie embraces the utopian ideal of communism, which means he just doesn't think out his ideas. He's an E'd up goof but harmless. Anselmo sounds like an asshole. Considering the current climate I think the answer is pretty obvious.

Gear! (Gear!), Saturday, 7 August 2004 17:51 (nineteen years ago) link

Anselmo makes Gene Simmons sound like Ghandi by comparison.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 7 August 2004 17:51 (nineteen years ago) link

Stalinism, if not Marxism, is pretty much dead, i.e. I haven't noticed any Stalinist countries dictating International Law lately.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Saturday, 7 August 2004 17:52 (nineteen years ago) link

Yes but he also rocks way harder than that talentless, greedy pussy.

And the answer IS obvious, I agree.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Saturday, 7 August 2004 17:53 (nineteen years ago) link

It's too bad that Jimmy Bower has to hang out with Phil. He's better than that.

ahhhhhahahaha. the sad thing is it's totally true.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Saturday, 7 August 2004 17:53 (nineteen years ago) link

Hasn't Gene Simmons worn a dhoti occasionally, or should I lay off the booze?

noodle vague (noodle vague), Saturday, 7 August 2004 17:53 (nineteen years ago) link

I would happily mock Bobby Gillespie is somebody started a thread about him.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 7 August 2004 17:54 (nineteen years ago) link

Mocking Bobby Gillespie is kind of like mocking Weird Al.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Saturday, 7 August 2004 17:55 (nineteen years ago) link

Hahahahahahaha

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 7 August 2004 17:58 (nineteen years ago) link

I just hope we don't see any Superjoint Ritual/Pantera fans parrotting Anselmos views. (unfortunately theres probably plenty on messageboards all over the internet).

Rock bastard, Saturday, 7 August 2004 18:06 (nineteen years ago) link

I think Anselmo is probably speaking for the dumber end of his fan-base, rather than influencing the ones that can read.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Saturday, 7 August 2004 18:08 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, Anselmo seems to exemplify the typical confused, contradictory, incoherent stance on race and politics that a lot of rednecks have.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Saturday, 7 August 2004 18:09 (nineteen years ago) link

yeah i wouldn't worry about that. He does weild a lot of influence, but any Anselmo fans who get into White Power shit because of him were probably predisposed to asshattery anyway

roger adultery (roger adultery), Saturday, 7 August 2004 18:10 (nineteen years ago) link

but, to be fair, most liberals I know have a similarly confused, contradictory and incoherent stance, if not more so.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Saturday, 7 August 2004 18:11 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, that's a given. It's just that they don't advocate killing people.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Saturday, 7 August 2004 18:12 (nineteen years ago) link

"It's time to make a parking lot — put a flag in the ground and call it the United States of the Middle East."

A friend of mine had some Israeli co-workers who when asked about the goings-on in the Middle East said the exact same thing about "turning it into a parking lot."

Joseph Pot (STINKOR™), Saturday, 7 August 2004 18:26 (nineteen years ago) link

That said, I'm really sensitive to the ILX witch-hunting when it comes to 'racism' around here.

I've always thought that witch-hunting is a term best used when talking about ppl accusing and condemning others for stuff that they haven't actually done/views they don't actually have, as opposed to accusing and condemning ppl based on actions that they have taken and views that they have endorsed.

But which one resonates with more evil in our current political climate? Which ideology is more dangerous right now? Communism or plain old American bigotry?

Roger, are you a time traveller?

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Saturday, 7 August 2004 19:13 (nineteen years ago) link

Phils on something lately. hes been throwing up on stage and nodding off during interviews.

Sir Chaki McBeer III (chaki), Saturday, 7 August 2004 19:26 (nineteen years ago) link

he's been an on-and-off junkie for along time i think.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Saturday, 7 August 2004 19:43 (nineteen years ago) link

He technically 'died' for a few minutes when he overdosed didn't he?

Rock bastard, Saturday, 7 August 2004 20:26 (nineteen years ago) link

One of my editors interviewed him when Ozzfest hit Ohio; he said there was a roadie sitting next to Anselmo for the whole interview whose job seemed to be to literally kick Phil awake when he nodded off. So he may well be back on the smack.

A Lethal Dose Of American Hatred is a very good album. So's Ted Nugent's Craveman. I listen to both all the time. And when I saw Nugent at Irving Plaza in January 2001, I wished he'd shut the fuck up between songs, too.

The Donald Duck Connection

latebloomer (latebloomer), Saturday, 7 August 2004 22:26 (nineteen years ago) link

Look, as much as I love Pantera's second album, Phil Anselmo -- and his former bandmates would invariably agree with me -- is, was, and always will be an utter fucking moron. To stick a microhphone in his gob and ask him to sound off on current events confirms as much.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 7 August 2004 23:25 (nineteen years ago) link

agreed. But that should go for all musicians / actors who feel the need to sound off.

1983 - Metal Magic
1984 - Projects In the Jungle
1985 - I Am The Night
1988 - Power Metal (Phil Anselmos 1st)
All 4 hair metal albums on 'Metal Magic' Records.

Haven't heard any of them, but I expect it's like the indie White Zombie albums. they will be all over soulseek.

I like Pantera but Anselmo might be one of the more fascist, douchiest musicians in rock. I'm not sure the rest of the band shared his views, I remember reading somewhere that they felt embarrassed by his attitudes.

I think really where the use of the rebel flag or Confederate flag with us really came from was from our love of bands like Lynyrd Skynyrd and whatnot — shit like that, you know. There was never a time when it was okay to promote hate without a little bit of the tongue-in-cheek. It was never this blatant thing, unless I was completely out of my mind, which I was at points in time. I’ll own that for damn sure, but that was a long ass-time ago.

I’m coming up on 47 years old, and I think that if it’s upsetting enough to people in general — this is tough to say without taking any side — I can see where if people see it as a symbol of hate these days. I wouldn’t want anything to fucking do with it. I wouldn’t want much to fucking do with it at all. You see a Confederate flag out there that says “Heritage, not hate.” I’m not so sure I’m buying into that, you know?…

In hindsight, you know what, I would have not used it.
