tell me more about Infamous, Ratchet & Clank and Dead Nation, pls.

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Tuesday, 17 May 2011 12:54 (thirteen years ago) link

I am currently playing through Infamous and I think it's great fun. Free roaming third person hero stuff where the main protagonist has somehow harnessed electrical power allowing him to zap stuff. Playing through story or side missions and collecting stuff and doing random good/bad deeds earns XP and allows power upgrades. Lots of climbing and jumping around buildings and grinding power lines.

Good thread here: come anticipate a TS w/me: infamous Vs. prototype Vs. I am alive

oh yeah, lol i got real excited about Infamous on that thread. It is good though.

Apparently this Ratchet & Clank game isn't a full release, it's a four hour mini-version or something that was made for PSN?

JimD, Tuesday, 17 May 2011 15:11 (thirteen years ago) link

quest for booty isn't very interesting. i stopped playing after the first stage.

what a shitty list of games imo

wipeout hd/fury is worth it.

yeah but presumably everyone already has it

2nd hand copies of Infamous & LBP gonna be piled high in yr local games shop in a months time

zappi, Tuesday, 17 May 2011 16:01 (thirteen years ago) link

xpost I thought Wipeout HD/Fury sold so bad that the company who made it went out of business (or at least so badly that they were compelled to put shamefully unavoidable product placements in Fury)? I know the online playerbase was pathetically miniscule last time I checked.

in any event, it really is a shame because that game is capital-g Great.

sorry, I meant "everyone with a brain"

I HAVE ISSUES (DJP), Tuesday, 17 May 2011 17:54 (thirteen years ago) link

Wipeout HD is indeed great (can't remember if I ever got around to buying the Fury pack) which is why imo this whole free game thing is an empty gesture to entice people back. Stacking the list with musty old best-sellers that everyone owns and now aren't worth anything is the sort of cynical rubbish that doesn't surprise me coming from Sony.

i'll admit i was naive and harbored hope for Beyond Good and Evil HD in this list, given that it was due to come out in "May".. :(

InFamous has to be on the list just to drum up more fans for the sequel, right?

^needs to be in this thread.

you have to get a firmware update out, right, absolutely as soon as possible. you don't have time to test it to make sure it doesn't do something bad, like maybe destroy ps3s. no time. just push it out and hope nothing bad happens. here goes...

Last night I got as far as changing my password, couldn't get into the psn store. Really very fucking close to just blowing away my Sony connection altogether.

I don't think you need to go into the actual store - I deleted mine from the account management section (or whatever the "sign in" thing turns into once you actually sign in).

I didn't even get that far. sign in with email/passwd -> "system is down"

Apparently Rockstar have changed their mind about 3.61 breaking machines. Or at least they've been persuaded to stop talking about it.

JimD, Thursday, 19 May 2011 12:55 (twelve years ago) link

I may have mentioned it on this thread already, but my PS3 died just the way it's being described in those articles right before PSN went down. I had been watching Netflix at the time. I don't have LA Noire.

rockapads, Thursday, 19 May 2011 16:34 (twelve years ago) link

That is weird, exactly the same thing happened to my PS3 the day before the network went down. I can't remember the exact sequence of events because I wasn't paying attention, but as far as I can remember, I put a DVD in, the machine beeped a few times and died. When I started it back up, it started fine for about 10 seconds before the slowing right down and freezing, then it was totally dead. It's out of Sony's warranty so I found a place online who said they could fix any PS3 problem, which they did. About a week after getting it back, the exact same thing happened again while playing Portal 2. They repaired it again, free of charge, and I've had it back for a few days and it seems to be ok. But by now, I'm kind of hoping it dies again so I can get a refund on the repair and just buy a straight Blu-Ray player. Had enough of it now.

Yeah, I haven't really taken any action because I don't want to part with it, but between the busted console and the hacked PSN thing, I'm thinking about either getting a blu-ray player + apple TV and waiting for the next generation of Xbox, or just using a cheap PC for a media center and saying goodbye to consoles for good.

rockapads, Friday, 20 May 2011 02:48 (twelve years ago) link

ps3s have always sucked as media centers. great for games, though!

zappi, Friday, 20 May 2011 18:15 (twelve years ago) link

james is that one of those programs that runs on ANOTHER computer, and streams the video to the PS3? i have never understood the attraction of that. it's like, what a great media center, all it needs is another computer on all the time to function properly.

40% chill and 100% negative (Tracer Hand), Friday, 20 May 2011 19:21 (twelve years ago) link

now, if it ran on a NAS, and played every format you could throw at it...

I HAVE ISSUES (DJP), Friday, 20 May 2011 19:24 (twelve years ago) link

never tried PS3 media server, but I messed with tversity or whatever and it was OK. eventually I realized all I wanted to do was play downloaded movies on my TV so I just bought a quick little USB stick and converted MKV to VOB and watched them directly off of it. I think the same thing is possible on 360.

rockapads, Friday, 20 May 2011 20:36 (twelve years ago) link

err.. TV shows. movies aren't worth the hassle.

40% chill and 100% negative (Tracer Hand), Friday, 20 May 2011 20:42 (twelve years ago) link

like, why can't the PS3 (or apple TV or whatever) just mount a networked drive and let me play the movies over that?

y'all know you can build/buy used a cheap pc for cheap and hook it into your network and play movies like that right? probably cheaper than a ps3 or an apple tv!

my PS3 was a gift, so it was actually much cheaper than a cheap PC

yeah, I mentioned it as an option in my post. Problem is it really isn't that cheap compared to the other options once you figure in the cost of the operating system (assuming you aren't a pirate or Linux person). I may do it the next time I need to upgrade my PC.

rockapads, Friday, 20 May 2011 22:14 (twelve years ago) link

I bought a WD TV Live for ~$90 that sits under my telly and plays everything I throw at it.
