I've wanted to see a Marvin Gaye one for a long time, but not THAT one.

Since that's a no-go, I'm into the Dennis Wilson one.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 2 June 2011 07:05 (twelve years ago) link

biopics are the worst. was hoping Ray/Walk the Line would have just sunk this shit into oblivion.

but these all look real promising!

Voted Marvin Gaye as I loved Temple's 'Oil City Confidential' and am intrugued to see what he would do here. Of the ones which are in development limbo has to be Milli Vanilli. I don't know the best way to approach it, 24HPP/Producers style farce or something darker.

anyway, if most of these make it to the screen, they will be terrible.

to me the main problem with these (and i guess biopics in general) is how they try to cram a whole life into a single two hour narrative. i'd love to see a movie about, say, a month in the life of miles davis in the late 50s or something. but a movie that does the whole childhood to death thing is not terribly interesting.

True story: I once got approached by a (very, very seedy) producer to write a mystery about the last night of Sam Cooke's life. I talked to Ned about it when we sat at the Hotel Figueroa, and we realized there was no way to make it a good movie.

Hilly Kristal would be an interesting project if it followed the interpretive fantasia format a la Velvet Goldmine, where you get guess the characters' identities -- "obv Mapplethorpe", "I think that might be Cheetah Chrome, not sure", "the hair's a toss up between Billy Ficca and Clem Burke"...

I'm kind of into a Marvin Gaye film based around him hanging out in Belgium. Then again, I wish "Walk the Line" had featured less Elvis and more Rick Rubin.

Sadly, yes. Even with Daltrey producing, a star on board (Mike Myers, and not, inexplicably, Jason Schwartman), and a working title (See Me, Feel Me: Keith Moon Naked, For Your Pleasure) Roger never found a script to his liking, despite being deluged with them.

There was a Keith Moon biopic planned some years ago. Was it dropped? Because if there's one biopic I'd love to see, it would be Keith Moon.

Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Thursday, 2 June 2011 22:42 (twelve years ago) link

It definitely would've made a great movie, but it was in development for nearly 10 years, and Daltrey never found a decent script, so he essentially killed the project.

I saw this documentary.

also, I suspect Daltrey was trying to make sure film never got made?

Marvin Gaye one would certainly be full of incident. I suspect it'd be really really depressing though.

Actually, he initiated the project, and was one of the producers. He definitely wanted to make sure that a sub-par Moon movie never got made, though. But interviews from around 8-10 years ago show him really excited about Mike Myers signing on.

Mike Myers as Moon woul be like Michael Mackintyre as Moon, i.e. wrong.

for some bizarre reason, Mark Ruffalo in The Kids Are All Right got me thinking he could do a Neil Diamond 70s biopic. don't know if i'd want to see it though ;)

Myers has also been older than Moon was when he died since about 1994, which is always annoying/distracting in biopics

McQueen's Fela project may still happen, but not likely to resemble a 'biopic':

I could almost see Myers as Moon circa '77-'78. But Schwartzman has the advantage of a) looking like Moon, and b) being a drummer.

the sammy davis one seems like it might actually be interesting, especially with andre 3k? snipes as jb = i hope this never comes to pass.

also anything about a drummer would be tough, since the drums are always the least convincingly-mimed instrument in movies. i think it only works if the actors actually learn to play a la 'that thing you do', that joy division thing, and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T83g05yX1dw

true, i think my main problem is just the idea of schwartzy trying to pull off a convincing british accent.
