so i already have infamous and wipeout, and dead nation looks like a boring robotron game which i'd hate. so i got the Ratchet and Crank

thanks for 0, Sony

if you had more than one account set up before the network went down then you can download more than two games.
as well as my UK account i had a US account set up so i could snoop on the US store and its let me download two more games. thanks Sony!
(Japanese & Hong Kong stores are still down so haven't tested them yet)

zappi, Monday, 6 June 2011 08:43 (twelve years ago) link

Good tip although I wasn't interested in anything besides LBP and Infamous. (I already have Wipeout+Fury.)

And now that I realize LBP is realllllly not for me (as I had suspected). Stephen Fry plus cute platforming = braindeath

40% chill and 100% negative (Tracer Hand), Monday, 6 June 2011 09:16 (twelve years ago) link

what kills LBP for me is the moving in and out of the screen, it doesn't seem to control properly, feels kinda broken.

zappi, Monday, 6 June 2011 09:36 (twelve years ago) link

ah forgot LBP,yeah got that already too and the second one

And yes the in and out is fricking frustrating, and they didn't change it for the second one either so they must think it works. But you're right it doesn't, and it works by itself leaving you with no control over it.

I still like it a lot though, Infamous and LBP probably the ones I'd go for if I had none already.

remove this man from the internet (Ste), Monday, 6 June 2011 09:44 (twelve years ago) link

yeah, one point they say "don't worry about moving in and out of the screen, it'll happen automatically" and well, it sure didn't feel like it.

i'm also just allergic to the cuteness of it all. when stephen fry said something like "collecting stickers is the height of cool on little big planet!" i was like "ugh!" and dropped the controller instinctively.

40% chill and 100% negative (Tracer Hand), Monday, 6 June 2011 09:49 (twelve years ago) link

like, that's great, but i just wanted a free game, i didn't want to get involved in virtual sticker collecting

"ugh!" and dropped the controller instinctively.

haha

i felt the same way about collecting stickers, but then i got more involved in creating the levels and you realise then that the stickers had a purpose after all.

Sooo otm. I was dead excited about this game until I played it. It's fatally boring and it controls like shit. I didn't try designing a level because I was already bored by that point.

I got Dead Nation and Ratchet & Clank as I already had the other three on offer.

Dead Nation reminds me of that PS1 game Bruce Willis did the voiceover for (googles to find... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apocalypse_(video_game) ). I enjoyed blasting through a couple of missions but I can't see me going back to it too often. Robotron still rules two-joystick shooters for me.

Ratchet & Clank: Quest for Booty reminded me of the Robots game (the 2005 movie spin-off) - looks and plays almost identically. My sons like it so I guess they'll get a few hours out of it.

Is the only way to access the Welcome Back package thru the email they sent out? I'm a little wary of clicking on email purportedly being sent by Sony, for obvious reasons.

I chose inFamous as my first free game and wowee, maybe I need to buy more games like this. I thought I had spent two hours playing last night and it ended up being closer to 4ish.

mh, Wednesday, 15 June 2011 20:39 (twelve years ago) link

it's a really fun game. I tried Prototype after I beat inFamous, hoping for a similar experience, but it got old fast. I do recommend Just Cause 2 if you haven't played it, though. it's a little bloated (I never did get around to beating it) but it is pretty damn fun once you get the hang of your abilities.

rockapads, Wednesday, 15 June 2011 22:14 (twelve years ago) link

I looooooooved Prototype and was bored by Infamous but that seems to be a challopy opinion I guess.

polyphonic, Wednesday, 15 June 2011 22:14 (twelve years ago) link

it's not challopy; i don't know that there is a consensus or anything. inFamous was simpler, less open world than Prototype, and much less complicated.

for some reason I took a break from Prototype about halfway through the game, and when tried to come back to it a few weeks later I couldn't remember how to do anything. There was no way I was gonna start the game over again, but the enemies were way too hard for me to do anything. If they do a sequel and the reviews say the graphics are better and the controls/abilities have been streamlined, I'll buy it for sure.

rockapads, Wednesday, 15 June 2011 22:38 (twelve years ago) link

I just found the gameplay completely exhilarating. I will grant that the story and gameworld are boring as hell.

polyphonic, Wednesday, 15 June 2011 22:51 (twelve years ago) link

is Dead Nation any good? I have the choice between that and Super Stardust as my second free game.

peter in montreal, Thursday, 16 June 2011 13:19 (twelve years ago) link

Dunno, but Super Stardust is pretty fun.

ok i will try it ... actually i have it installed in ubuntu already, didn't work so well when i tried it before but that was when i was still using my crappy wifi signal, have switched to powerline now. (curiously though that means my xbox can no longer see my pc at all.)

i love the smell of facepalm in the morning (ledge), Sunday, 19 June 2011 22:48 (twelve years ago) link

no joy, but the only film it's affected so far is step brothers so hey. ps3 media server a bit weird with subtitles though.

ledge, Thursday, 23 June 2011 16:53 (twelve years ago) link

Does PS3 Media Server share video to the 360?

Nhex, Thursday, 23 June 2011 19:40 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, shares to pretty much anything, you just sometimes need to tweak it's cfg files (eg I made one to get it to transcode and stream everything to the dlna streamer built into my tv, but it took half a hour of fiddling).

JimD, Thursday, 23 June 2011 19:49 (twelve years ago) link

will try, cool

Nhex, Thursday, 23 June 2011 19:50 (twelve years ago) link

Oops -- I didn't actually download the first free game in the Welcome Back package, and now I can't access it to select and download the game! >=(

Matt Groening's Cousin (Leee), Monday, 27 June 2011 04:07 (twelve years ago) link

I had the same problem; the solution is here (I haven't tested it yet)

Q: I no longer have the option to choose my free Welcome Back games. What can I do?
A: If you navigate away from the Welcome Back section of the store without choosing your free games or exit the store completely you may need to follow the below in order to choose and download your free games.
On your PlayStation 3 or PlayStation Portable navigate to the PlayStation Network icon on the XMB
Log into your PlayStation Network account and choose Account Management > Transaction Management > Services List
Choose “PlayStation Network Promotions” from the list of services displayed
Select either “PS3 Free Games” or “PSP Free Games” and then choose “Select Content”
You will be taken to the store to choose your remaining free games.
