Best MELVINS bass player

I mean, Preston's work with Thrones and Earth is SunnO))) is swell, but saying he's the best Melvins bassist is like saying Mark McKinney was the best Saturday Night Live cast member.

alls im saying is if you look at the music joe preston has played besides the melvins - and how the melvins sound changed while he was in the band - its pretty obv that he had way more influence on their music than any of the rest of their bassists who tend to be more in the just along for the ride category.

jhosh, what are you getting at? "Boris" was kinda the template of the Joe Preston era Melvins, and that was when Lori was still in the band.

Even saying that, "Eye Flys" was a template for that too, and that one predated Lori. I'm not seeing where the "Joe changed the Melvins" thing is happenin', all respect to Joe, Melvins, etc.

Even though there are no writing credits, a long standing rumor is that bassist Joe Preston wrote the song "With Teeth" and that the name "Joe" printed on the back of the album was in a much larger font than "King Buzzo" or "Dale" because Osborne had grown weary of Preston's repeated requests to be allowed more input and given more credit. Preston was fired from the Melvins soon after Lysol was released.

There's also the Joe Preston album (from the Melvins solo albums). At least you can be sure Joe wrote the songs on that one.

they played the shit out of Lysol's first track live for a time after Lysol's release, without Preston.

The band changed every 1-3 albums since the 80s.

Who doesn't think King Buzzo was the best of the three? "Isabella" and "Skeeter" are among my favorite Melvs tracks of all time.

Dale's is the best. Buzzo's close second.

Buzz has been real nice the times ive met him. If Preston is responsible for boring Sunno and Earth bullshit metal than he should be destroyed.

I don't know, but it seems unfait to credit JP with Lysol's drone/noise tendencies. Lysol came out after the Eggnog EP, on which Lori played bass. And Eggnog's got Charmicarmicat, which out hippos Lysol by a long shot.

The drone thing seems like something the Melvins messed with for a while, then dropped, and Joe just happened to happen along sometime in the middle of that phase.

I voted for Mark - mostly cuz Stag is so great.

Joe should only be held responsible for Thrones. That's his band.

Having said that, I think Lysol is the best Melvins record.

The one time I saw Melvins with Joe, Buzz and Dale left the stage after 20 minutes and Joe kept playing solo for another 5 minutes. He's a trooper.

It makes me very happy to see Jared in this band. He deserves it more than anyone.

i guess i'm not too surprised that buzz was a dick abt joe preston, but i'm shocked (shocked!) that so few stepped up to defend it itt. only one of the three solo recs with something to say, and easily the most forward-thinking, thanks mostly to "hands first flower". "bricklebrit" is pretty cool, too, rewards VOLYUME.

king buzzo = a couple nice melvins demos padded out w/ a throwaway noise piece and an awesome (awesome!) dave grohl goof. dale crover, while surprisingly song-driven & much more consistently "melvins-y" than the other two, winds up pretty forgettable, imo.

I don't think I'd have voted for Trevor Dunn but I really like him with the Melvins

Trevor Dunn probably is the best bassist as bassist.

I'm thinking best period of Melvins might be a bit more under debate as the power quartet with Big Business and those records I think are as good as anything they have done.
