The writing in the comic is pretty dire, though. I don't know how anyone could have expected something magical.

AMC seems to be appallingly run.

this article was written by darabont's publicists. its all UNNAMED SOURCES SAID FRANK IS A GENIUS AND AMC IS A BUNCH OF SHIT-HEELS.
― strongly recommend. unless you're a bitch (mayor jingleberries), Thursday, 11 August 2011 20:52 (twelve years ago) link
lol:
There also have been no public comments from the cast, and a source with knowledge of the situation says AMC has been "terrorizing" them and their representatives to discourage them from speaking out on Darabont's behalf. "They're scared," confirms another insider. "They're on a zombie show. They are all really easy to kill off."

Watch What Happens Live...for a zombie show? Isn't everybody going to sound like Chris Farley's interviewer character from SNL?

Could've come in handy for Lost! Which obviously is not AMC, but still.

not reinventing the wheel

Do you mean Doctor Who Confidential? Those are just making-of features.

BBC did a discussion show during the first couple of seasons of 24. It was utter trash but oddly watchable.
― Inevitable stupid samba mix (chap), Thursday, 22 September 2011 18:45 (twelve years ago) link
I would have enjoyed a Lost one, but this show isn't really complex enough that it needs a discussion show.

Freeway scene might be the best set piece this show has done. Still not convinced, even if it broke every cable record or whatever.
― encarta it (Gukbe), Wednesday, 19 October 2011 20:06 (twelve years ago) link
I barely breathed while they were under the cars! I re-watched and it wasn't the least bit scary - definitely a suspense-based thriller.
― she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Wednesday, 19 October 2011 20:07 (twelve years ago) link
Probably the best episode so far, I'm hoping things continue to pick up this season. I think the weakest link is still the cast, not a single one of them really does a convincing job of selling their character imho. I get that is kinda secondary to OMG gore and zombies, but its the only thing keeping this from being an A+ show.
Shocked that it broke like every cable drama record ever though.
― jon /via/ chi 2.0, Wednesday, 19 October 2011 20:09 (twelve years ago) link
wow, really? I couldn't really watch this past the kid running back to the family after hiding in a tree and sheriff yokum beating the heads of zombies in. The show just sadly isn't that good.

Then you missed the digging through zombie guts scene! I didn't - I had just sat down with a nice chicken stir fry at that point D: Note to self: do not eat during The Walking Dead.

I think the weakest link is still the cast, not a single one of them really does a convincing job of selling their character imho.
the problem is really more that most of them don't have a character to sell.

weakest link in this is the terrible terrible dialogue
― American Horror Sorry (jjjusten), Wednesday, 19 October 2011 20:37 (twelve years ago) link
This is true, for the most part. I feel like the main dude COULD be a compelling character though. But, yeah, the rest of them are barely sketches of character tropes at this point, hardly the fault of the actors that none of them are engaging I guess. But wife-stealing redneck guy is a pretty terrible actor it seems.
― jon /via/ chi 2.0, Wednesday, 19 October 2011 20:38 (twelve years ago) link
ok let me amend that, the only thing worse than the dialogue is what might have been the worst opening monlogue for a season premier ever.
i still enjoy the show, but yeah all of these people say the dumbest most unbelieveable shit like ALL THE TIME.
― American Horror Sorry (jjjusten), Wednesday, 19 October 2011 20:39 (twelve years ago) link
xxp otm - kinda hard for characters to develop if they keep saying dumb ass rote expository bullshit all the time.

i've determined that what i really want out of this show is just like nonstop zombie mobs wandering around.tell the story from the zombie perspective. i don't give two shits about any of these characters. until they're zombies.
― loads of personality, loved to chase chickens (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 19 October 2011 20:45 (twelve years ago) link
justen so otm. I was already skeptical about the show developing past "whoa zombies" but gave them the benefit of the doubt that a year to work on who these people are would get the show rolling into a decent ensemble show with a horror background. Then that opening monologue came. Ugh.
― Clay, Wednesday, 19 October 2011 20:46 (twelve years ago) link
i'm pretty sure they would make even the zombie dialogue annoying and unbelievable.

See I think this show plays up to my expectations wrt to zombies, tension, and gore enough that I can overlook the shitty characters and dialogue. Keep giving me scenes of zombie autopsy, gruesome deaths, suspenseful moments like the kids under the car, and genuinely WTF moments like the last 2 minutes of this episode and its more than enough to keep me watching. I don't expect like Emmy winning performances from this show.
― jon /via/ chi 2.0, Wednesday, 19 October 2011 20:48 (twelve years ago) link
kinda hoping the new showrunner (dude from The Shield who wasn't Shawn Ryan) & writing staff will spruce things up, & I am willing to stick around to find out. Darabont allegedly wrote & had quite a hand in the first several eps, so it will take a minute to shake out.
― HOOTERS FOOD AND BEVERAGE (Pillbox), Wednesday, 19 October 2011 20:49 (twelve years ago) link
also can someone explain to me why any parent would let their kid come along on a wild zombie hunt beyond "because the kid said 'but mommm!'"? that was the most horrible plot contrivance I've come across in awhile.
― Clay, Wednesday, 19 October 2011 20:51 (twelve years ago) link
why did they HAVE to rerecord that monologue and play it without any background surface noise at all? Not only was it terribly written but the sound was crazy amateurish.
― loads of personality, loved to chase chickens (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 19 October 2011 20:57 (twelve years ago) link
According to AICN the freeway scene and i guess scenes before it were from Darabont's first ep that was then cut into the redone second ep which is why it was 90 minutes. I don't know if there is any truth to that.
― encarta it (Gukbe), Wednesday, 19 October 2011 21:03 (twelve years ago) link
hm. that may make me want to watch the rest of the ep. Did it get notably better?
― loads of personality, loved to chase chickens (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 19 October 2011 21:03 (twelve years ago) link
yeah the kid going on the zombie hunt and then worse being left behind with a small group was the dumbest damn thing i have seen in the horror genre in a long time, and that is saying something
