but yeah i see yr point

g++ (gbx), Thursday, 4 August 2011 17:25 (twelve years ago) link

Now that I'm 700 pages into the 3rd book I kinda wish they'd compressed the 2nd book into a chapter of the 3rd and skipped it. 3rd book is indeed crazy.

Bryan, Thursday, 4 August 2011 17:50 (twelve years ago) link

dude that's still pretty spoilery?

Ppl die in this series. Spoiler. But srsly if u have no idea who I care about how can that possibly be a spoiler?

― Mordy, Thursday, August 4, 2011 10:21 AM Bookmark Suggest Ban Permalink

Thanks, now I'm on the lookout for many many deaths in the middle of book 3.

his loser, bum of a son, named Jesus Christ (Leee), Friday, 5 August 2011 03:19 (twelve years ago) link

yeah don't be hinting at spoilers, its almost as bad as the spoilers themselves to anyone who's smart enough to actually ~make inferences~

ciderpress, Friday, 5 August 2011 03:22 (twelve years ago) link

i don't wanna start a big tumult about this, but i didn't spoil anything and if you think any of these books don't contain numerous deaths you totally haven't gotten this series (and you probably didn't watch the first season of the show yet)

Mordy, Friday, 5 August 2011 03:58 (twelve years ago) link

nods, winks, etc to specific deaths should be avoided. it would also be preferable for people reading the books to not know when or whenabouts in a book there is a HUGE SHOCK because then they'll be looking for it and expecting something etc.

Still, saying that people fucking die at some point in these books is not a spoiler at all.

It's sad he was Sean Bean.

Don't think anyone has been particularly spoilery so far TBH, I've heard the later books are dramatic and I expect that to involve people dying.

Inevitable stupid samba mix (chap), Friday, 5 August 2011 06:55 (twelve years ago) link

Knowing GRRM's rep for killing characters is one thing, but when you start indicating whereabouts these deaths happen, that's the beginning of some poor form. I definitely land on the paranoid end of spoilers (if that wasn't immensely clear already), because in the case of ASOIAF, I wanted those deaths to be as sudden and horrifying as Ned's was, but if at certain points in a book I'm starting to wonder if it's this character or that character, I'm not sure the actual death's going to have that effect on me.

That's why I'd hope that people err on the side of caution, because once the cat's out of the bag, that horse has left the barn.

I mean, it's definitely an asymmetrical dynamic and a possible burden for fans who aren't Spoiler Nazis Socialists, but getting specific again, this thread is for the TV show, *not* what's happened in Storm of Swords (or at least till/if the show catches up with SOS).

his loser, bum of a son, named Jesus Christ (Leee), Saturday, 6 August 2011 17:16 (twelve years ago) link

is the cat riding the horse? or did it scare it or?

max, Saturday, 6 August 2011 17:23 (twelve years ago) link

the cat beat the horse at dice but then the horse took off across the river to catch a ship before it left

g++ (gbx), Saturday, 6 August 2011 20:23 (twelve years ago) link

Just finished zooming through bks 1-4, but have no appetite for 5 after the ball-ache of 4. That's some sub-Silmarillion world-building-not-story-telling tedium, right there.

stet, Sunday, 7 August 2011 20:36 (twelve years ago) link

keep reading; book 5 basically provides the asparagus tips to the plotlines of #4.

Roy Dotrice (who apparently does the audio versions) has been cast as Pryomancer Hallyne, while Hannah Murray will play Gilly.

He's not for all tastes, of course-- he totally goes for it theatrically with different voices for different characters. I love it. You haven't lived till you've heard the grizzled Dotrice act out Jon Snow's SPOILER REMOVED with the SPOILER REMOVED girl

We bought the books, but then my (visually handicapped) husband realized he wasn't able to read the small letters. So I urged him to buy the Kindle package (for the ipad). He's so happy. :-)
