i was hoping it would be the "yellow yellow yellow" version too... it's not, but wow! it's good.

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Friday, 29 April 2005 00:53 (nineteen years ago) link

Ye gods and then some, the Pornography remaster is practically *spine-chilling* -- "One Hundred Years" has never felt quite so creepily tactile before, it was practically an assault. It's like they kept all the murk but made sure every drum hit and bass note and etc. practically smacks you upside the head. Brr. I'm on "Siamese Twins" now and it's like a breath of needed air.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 29 April 2005 02:26 (nineteen years ago) link

Whew. Okay, bonus disc:

* "Break" -- bass-led murk, instrumental, substantially less crazy than Pornography turned out to be but still glowering

* "Demise" -- similarly instrumental, certainly not happy happy joy joy but gentler, a bit like how some of those Faith extras showed a different side. Cleaner studio recording = better all around impact. More than a sketch, less than a complete song but really good in terms of mood and the arrangement is mostly there.

* "Temptation" -- almost starts off like the ghost of "Primary" but is definitely more 'up' -- again, it's almost surprising trying to square these kind of songs with the eventual album, it wasn't *all* doom and gloom. Strong drums, gentle ascension by both Robert and Simon, some good breaks by Robert in particular, longer than I anticipated but keeps its energy going well, I like...

* "The Figurehead" -- less overwhelming in demo form but not too far off from the final version, more reverb on the vocals...enjoyable enough but little to remark on

* "The Hanging Garden" -- *much* less insane than the final version, in this form it could have been a 1983 B-side and nobody would have blinked, moody rather than rampaging. Different lyrics/lyrical structure (especially on the chorus), heavily flanged guitar but no spindly riff or feedback growls, simpler drum machine work (unclear whether this is a solo demo or not).

* "One Hundred Years" -- pretty sure I heard this demo before or something close to it. Like "The Figurehead" not far off from the final version, the arrangement is all in place, but the mix of the synth/drone here puts it much higher and gives everything a wonderfully wrong feeling, queasy.

* "Airlock: The Soundtrack" -- Carnage Visors part two it ain't. A sort of piano melody but not really, lots of whooshing and mechanical/factory sounds, tortured vocals, flutes -- it must mean something but what?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 29 April 2005 03:35 (nineteen years ago) link

As for the live tracks...

* "Cold" -- good version, not too different from the studio, but...

* "A Strange Day' -- even faster than the original, if you can believe it -- maybe not by much, but it's still there, drums less prominent, vocals a touch clearer, extremely nervous...

* "Pornography" -- the drums kick in rather than fade in, unsurprisingly, but the distorto voice sample thing is intact at least initially, some extremely good/crazed guitar work towards the end, murky audience tape quality but it's still damn strong

* "All Mine" -- as on Curiosity

* "A Short Term Effect" and "Siamese Twins" -- both from what might have been the final Cure show in Brussels, the first feels a bit rushed as if the band just wanted to get through it and get it over with, though "Siamese" is kept at its usual slower pace, just enough.

And finally:

* "Temptation Two" -- let's go to bed, indeed. But in a far more rushed, fragmented and bizarro sense, bridging "Temptation" and where it would end up, transitional if you will.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 29 April 2005 04:16 (nineteen years ago) link

And that's a wrap!

Baaderonixxxorzh (Fabfunk), Friday, 29 April 2005 10:09 (nineteen years ago) link

Okay, no one told me that "In Your House" was actually the "Two People" version from "Curiosity". AWESOME.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 2 May 2005 14:58 (nineteen years ago) link

*confused but intrigued* You mean on the second disc?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 2 May 2005 15:20 (nineteen years ago) link

So which are the next three to be released?

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Monday, 2 May 2005 15:27 (nineteen years ago) link

(xpost) Yep! I got ridiculously stoked when I heard that!

I also think some of these tracks might have been on the Play For Today bootleg.

*checks*

OMG I AM SO GOOD THAT RECORDING OF "M" IS ON SAID BOOTLEG. GO ME!

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 2 May 2005 15:29 (nineteen years ago) link

Ignore me, I'm just really impatient for Head on the Door.

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Monday, 2 May 2005 15:36 (nineteen years ago) link

Heheheh, happy Dan. I think -- I could be wrong? -- that all the Curiosity tracks have been rereleased now. Which is nice.

Does Ned want a double disc Concert disc rerelease? Oh I think he does. Does Ned want a full digital remastered version of that take of "To Wish Impossible Things" that was only on the video of Play and not on the CD release to appear on that rerelease? OH GIVE A GUESS. Etc.

Good lord, so the next set of rereleases will cover the Glove, Japanese Whispers stuffage in some form and The Top. OH HOW SAD AND HORRIBLE.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 2 May 2005 15:40 (nineteen years ago) link

Lol never drummed better in his life than he did on "All Cats Are Grey". MAYBE "A Strange Day".

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 2 May 2005 16:01 (nineteen years ago) link

full digital remastered version of that take of "To Wish Impossible Things" that was only on the video of Play

Err, you mean 'The Big Hand', right?

Baaderonixxxorzh (Fabfunk), Monday, 2 May 2005 16:46 (nineteen years ago) link

*coughs* Excuse me, Show, not Play (Out).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 2 May 2005 16:54 (nineteen years ago) link

TS: Show vs Paris

(OMG The demo of "Doubt" is... WOW.)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 2 May 2005 17:11 (nineteen years ago) link

TS: Show vs Paris

No overlapping tracks = HOORAY. (But I've always listened to Paris more.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 2 May 2005 17:15 (nineteen years ago) link

I never even bought Show.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 2 May 2005 17:52 (nineteen years ago) link

Dan, where is the play for today bootleg recorded? is it the Werchter festival?

mzui (mzui), Monday, 2 May 2005 18:01 (nineteen years ago) link

It was a show on May 24, 1980 in Arnheim, Netherlands.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 2 May 2005 18:04 (nineteen years ago) link

Ah, yeah, thats a goody.

mzui (mzui), Monday, 2 May 2005 18:06 (nineteen years ago) link

YES IT IS. That boot is one of my favorite CDs of all time.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 2 May 2005 18:08 (nineteen years ago) link

I never even bought Show.

It's good...but that's all it is, good. I gather the reason both it and the movie exist is because Porl had already told Robert he wanted to quit soon and Robert wanted to have a good document of the time and place (and also to have something without Lol, ie The Cure in Orange, which is still a better film and performance overall).

But that encore on the Show film, now that's something.

oh, have I violated ILM protcol, cuh!

mzui (mzui), Monday, 2 May 2005 18:20 (nineteen years ago) link

;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 2 May 2005 18:21 (nineteen years ago) link

I've got this one but it isn't that great:

http://www.musicfanclubs.org/cure/boots/hothothot.html

I also have Swinging Piggy In The Mirror lying around somewhere.

The version of "Forever" on the Faith bonus disc is... disturbing. I LONG FOR AND LUST AFTER THE CURIOSITY VERSION.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 2 May 2005 18:25 (nineteen years ago) link

Very late to the table on this thread. In any case, I picked up the re-issues for Faith, Pornography and Seventeen Seconds this weekend. I'm rationalizing the expenditure by giving the versions of each album I already had (the reg'lar Elektra editions) to my punk/metal-discovering 12 year old nephew. I wasn't going to pick them up at first, until I saw all the rarieites/extras. To finally be able to hear tracks that originally appeared on the Curiosity compilation (side b of the cassette of Concert) remastered in their full glory is my goal. I have those tracks culled together on a bootleg, but the sound quality is a marked upgrade from what I had before. Anyway, blah blah blah blah blah.....I'd forgotten how fucking amazing these records are.

The Killing Joke back catalogue is being re-issued later this year. Here's hoping they follow this example.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 2 May 2005 18:26 (nineteen years ago) link

Don't forget the Siouxsie reissues!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 2 May 2005 18:29 (nineteen years ago) link

Okay, I'd forgotten that "Charlotte Sometimes" is FUCKING AWESOME. Oh my God.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 2 May 2005 18:34 (nineteen years ago) link

and Talking Heads!

mzui (mzui), Monday, 2 May 2005 18:36 (nineteen years ago) link

On that bleak track
See the sun is gone again
Tears were pouring down her face
She was crying and crying
For a girl who died
So many years before

(SO GREAT)

(Also that extended chord on the words "Charlotte Sometimes" with all the ninths and elevenths in it!)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 2 May 2005 18:36 (nineteen years ago) link

I need to arrange an a capella version of this song.

I remember reading a Cure write-up long ago that was talking about the amazing imagery of Smith's lyrics and quoted as an example "'Come to escape,' he says/And Charlotte sometimes..." I think I went completely postal in ridiculing this writer. I think it's in Ten Imaginary Years somewhere.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 2 May 2005 18:41 (nineteen years ago) link

My favorite is the rendition of "Charlotte Sometimes" on Concert. I picked up the Concert cassette on a bike trip through Europe in 1987, and was forever flipping the tape over. Right at the end of "Charlotte Sometimes", on the flip was the beginning of "All Mine" (a song fragment that haunts me to this day)...which i was continually listening to over and over and over...

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 2 May 2005 18:44 (nineteen years ago) link

I was thinking about compiling a double CD of live tracks as an alternative version of Curiosity.

It would be a great listen, there are lots of superb versions of songs that spring to mind, it could start at '79 and go through to '04.

Anyone interested? Any song suggestions?

mzui (mzui), Monday, 2 May 2005 19:15 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm in. There are a few songs I'd suggest but in many cases I don't know the performances they're from...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 2 May 2005 19:24 (nineteen years ago) link

Okay, I'll get a tracklist together....Any more, c'mon peeps, let me abuse my work's facilities here!

mzui (mzui), Monday, 2 May 2005 19:27 (nineteen years ago) link

"Temptation" is begging to be drowned in Pornography murk. I am loving this to bits.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 2 May 2005 19:37 (nineteen years ago) link

OMG "A Strange Day"!!!!!!!!!!!! This is fucking awesome.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 2 May 2005 20:19 (nineteen years ago) link

"PORNOGRAPHY" OMG

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 2 May 2005 20:24 (nineteen years ago) link

Hehehe.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 2 May 2005 20:28 (nineteen years ago) link

"Temptation Two"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HOW AWESOME!

Half of these demos are like Seventeen Seconds with fangs.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 2 May 2005 20:39 (nineteen years ago) link

And now there's no more surprise and you have to wait.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 2 May 2005 20:40 (nineteen years ago) link

The hilarious thing is that all through "Temptation Two" I was sitting here going, "God, this sounds EXACTLY LIKE another song, but not 'Let's Go To Bed'..." and then I went, "Oh yeah, 'Temptation' from earlier on the CD. Duh."

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 2 May 2005 20:47 (nineteen years ago) link

Hahaha.

And then you started humming "Oh you've got grey eyes, oh you've got green eyes..."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 2 May 2005 20:48 (nineteen years ago) link

"Airlock" is kind of every stupid idea art students have about incidental film music wrapped up into one horrid little composition. I have no time for it.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 2 May 2005 20:49 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, but there's giggling.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 2 May 2005 20:50 (nineteen years ago) link

(I like to imagine that the film shows three little dark elves dancing around and murdering Chopin.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 2 May 2005 20:50 (nineteen years ago) link

Meanwhile, Carnage Visors details the slow crawl of a guy getting out of his chair and eventually washing his hands.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 2 May 2005 20:51 (nineteen years ago) link

Carnage Visors is a stroke by stroke aural recreation of a slow, intense bout of sexing!
