He killed at Decibel Fest several years back. Strictly balls-out dancehall. I usually hate that kind of "look it's urban music but fucked up" thing. It was vicious, tho.

I would also like to challop that he is better and less boring than Jimmy Edgar.

lol is not enough (blank), Sunday, 14 August 2011 16:41 (twelve years ago) link

Given that Jimmy Edgar is generally not good and consistently boring, I absolve you of all challoping.

Nick, those are two standouts for sure... Come1 is the one you're thinking of. I love that little descending three-note echo guitar part that comes in after a few minutes.

i thought it was just me but this thread keeps repopping up so i feel i should retry it

fauxmarc, Monday, 15 August 2011 17:11 (twelve years ago) link

just hearing this now, but it does remind me a little of sepalcure (but not as pretty, or as good as dance music) and faltydl. my first impression is that a lot of it is too busy to be as fast as it is, but I guess that's no than imo

Dominique, Monday, 15 August 2011 17:45 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah Come1 is the highlight, waiting for someone to drop that at the perfect moment in a set

Dare, Monday, 15 August 2011 18:41 (twelve years ago) link

at first i was like "oh hell no" because it's based on a rhythm i've been meaning to make into a dance track for years (happens to be identical to a certain bass drum pattern in new orleans brass band music), but he did a great job with it. i like the jazzy live drums and the way he breaks up the pattern when the backbeat comes in.

hardcore oatmeal (Jordan), Monday, 15 August 2011 18:51 (twelve years ago) link

I like this IDM

moonship journey to baja, Monday, 15 August 2011 20:08 (twelve years ago) link

in fact I would go so far as to say I prefer this IDM to the real thing (footwork?)

moonship journey to baja, Monday, 15 August 2011 20:49 (twelve years ago) link

I think maybe part of the reason this struck me as well as it did was because I didn't approach it as dance music, or IDM, or footwork, or whatever, because its not really any of those things. It's either too zany or too soft or too hard; to my (not incredibly erudite) ears it sounds unlike anything else. It conspicuously uses elements of other things, but distanced enough from pastiche or self-conscious referentiality or eccentricity. Think I'll pop it in in a bit, actually.

qpә (EDB), Monday, 15 August 2011 23:44 (twelve years ago) link

which parts did you think were too zany?

moonship journey to baja, Monday, 15 August 2011 23:51 (twelve years ago) link

this is the clear standout track IMO

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iLYUgYWBXhg

though on a track-by-track basis i'd say "room(s)" is a much more pleasant proposition than dj diamond's "flight muzik", i don't think there's anything quite as good as this on "room(s)"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hpnff1guVuc

sounds like 4 hero collaborating with dj assault

moonship journey to baja, Monday, 15 August 2011 23:57 (twelve years ago) link

"Now U Know tha Deal 4 Real" is the one that burrowed furthest into my brain first for sure. I wouldn't expect that vocal sample and that little Tri Repetae melody to fit together so snugly, but they do, and I like that there's a little more space in this track than in some of the other busier ones.

Clarke B., Tuesday, 16 August 2011 00:11 (twelve years ago) link

xposts: well, Zany is a bad word, for whoch I still can't think of something better. I think I mean to say the way the rhythms works; i.e. that they're really fast but in a way that's surprisingly not intense. I guess.

qpә (EDB), Tuesday, 16 August 2011 02:58 (twelve years ago) link

It feels to me like the drums are relatively low in the mix, which may contribute to them not feeling intense or as if they're carrying or are the focal point of the tracks. Rolling rather than drilling. I think the music is sometimes so lush and enveloping that the drum programming feels like it's buoying things up rather than driving them.

Clarke B., Tuesday, 16 August 2011 03:30 (twelve years ago) link

"I’m glad Machinedrum did that service of showing people who weren’t quite ready to get ‘real’ footwork that it’s ideas can be watered down into a sugary, acceptable and beautifully poppy form."

"come1" seems to sample "going back to my roots" by richie havens?

this is one of the first IDM-type albums in a long-ass time that it's occurred to me many of the songs could/should have been at least two minutes longer

mr peabody (moonship journey to baja), Monday, 29 August 2011 17:20 (twelve years ago) link

"GBYE" is exhilarating... I love the lack of restraint on this record. I've also wished for some of the tracks to go on longer, but I like the breakneck furious rush of it all.

Popped this on at work today, love all the tunes except for Eyesdontlie which gets on my nerves with the excessive overplay of the pitch shifted vocal loop, but the rest is just utterly glorious.

Seriously, barring him wearing something that id's him as a nazi cannibal - who gives a shit what he looks like?

Damo Suzuki's Parrot, Monday, 28 October 2013 23:57 (ten years ago) link

Room(s) is the better record, this feels like a rehash/refinement. Leading off with "gunshotta" is a detriment to the album, nothing else leaves as good an impression. "center your love" is a nice Boards of Canada track. What am I gonna do with these useless art cards? Gimme a basic jewel case, this shit does nothing for the music.

braunld (Lowell N. Behold'n), Tuesday, 29 October 2013 03:38 (ten years ago) link

I am still very down with this album, jamming it a lot lately

it's a different feeling than "Room(s)" but that's okay with me

the tune was space, Tuesday, 29 October 2013 03:44 (ten years ago) link

This doesn't feel anything like Room(s) to me, rhythmically or otherwise.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 29 October 2013 09:50 (ten years ago) link

this is very much of the same sound palette as Room(s)... maybe the rhythms are more streamlined, or pared down on Vapor City? Some of these beats recall his various remixes and tracks on the nastyfukk ep... Room(s) has an abundance of good-great tracks, much of this is weaker in comparison. imo

dreamy track w/the spare beat (clap delay), Drive-esque bass line is nice/different. dig the filtering and rapid-fire kicks on "eye don't lie," it recalls Squarepusher's "Journey to Reedham/9:30 am mix," sorta.

i'm annoyed that Ninja Tune's site couldn't process my paypal payment attempts, after trying to buy the cd for two weeks. FWIW, the album (CD) is priced cheap (bundled w/mp3s) on the Ninja Tune website (w/supposed free international shipping). Couldn't get it to work, though

some of the Vapor City vibe recalls this remix of a Bonobo track: http://youtu.be/6qmVNB4nalk

braunld (Lowell N. Behold'n), Tuesday, 29 October 2013 23:13 (ten years ago) link

alright, "dont 1 2 lose u" is dope, and the art cards *smell* good.

braunld (Lowell N. Behold'n), Saturday, 2 November 2013 04:23 (ten years ago) link

found vapor city pleasant, well-listenable, etc, but still skipping several tracks. it's like he minimized the 'dirt' that made room(s) lively and dynamic. on rooms, the kicks have more weight, snare cracks have a REPORT, and the background tonal washes are gaseous, expansive -- more space between the components in general. "Door(s)" ends up with the lower register elements all blown out and overdriven, almost as if he just fucked around and kept the results. there are still raw bits on vapor city, but they're nearly sanded off/obscured. maybe a poor analogy, but similar to jim o'rourke's rock stuff, and the polish he applied to a couple of sonic youth's albums. the dirt has a sort of finer grain, it's well-sanded and finished. like made into a toy music, figurines, etc.

Which has surprised you the most?
The Machinedrum one, 'Rooms' - I didn't necessarily think that was gonna do well because I thought it was almost watered down footwork, but it really connected with a lot of people and that became a scene-defining record. I thought that it was another sort of post-garage, influenced by footwork, record. It was just the right kind of watered down that people like, I s'pose. Influences were watered down on both sides and it coalesced into something very easygoing.

boxedjoy, Wednesday, 19 October 2016 10:17 (seven years ago) link

It's extremely brightly coloured, I didn't really expect this from him, closer to Glass Swords or the last Hudson Mohawke record than his previous records, but with the same frenetic approach to rhythm. I like it but some of it feels half-realised and it didn't quite live up to the frankly awesome promise of the first couple of minutes.

Tim F, Thursday, 20 October 2016 20:43 (seven years ago) link

I don't really hear this as a Jamie XX move? That would imply this was grey, lifeless, limp, unengaging, etc. I can imagine this actually provoking a response.

boxedjoy, Saturday, 22 October 2016 14:12 (seven years ago) link

this feels lively and fresh, compared to Vapor City. it sounds like he's moving beyond his regular template/formula, with more immediate pop elements and flashiness.. dig the bright, colorful, up front quality of the sounds. i read a lot of negative talk about the new album, pleasantly surprised
