there's like a 1% chance that a tree or heavy tree branch falls on your car
this would have to be like cat 4 for something to fall into your apartment and do any damage

Supposedly it's not an apples-to-apples thing w/r/t how much a category (n) will do in NYC. According to the gov't:
Due to regional geography, hurricanes in New York City — though infrequent — can do more damage than hurricanes of similar strength in the southern United States.

2004-2006 we lost a few days of class on this, the first week of school, thanks to goddamn hurricanes. They're ok as long as you don't lose power.

Before a previous hurricane didn't then-governor Mario Cuomo tell people something like "don't go out to look at it, it's not the dragon in a Chinese movie" or something like that?

What's funny is that is also the exact dividing line for gentrification in my part of willamsburg right now (across the street = 'luxury condos')

i mean maybe it's no coincidence-- the reason gentrif peters out here is because this is where the 5 and 6 story tenements with tons of rent-controlled family residents begin. Maybe it's also less hurricane vulnerable because of the same mass of stocky bldgs?
― Axolotl with an Atlatl (Jon Lewis), Thursday, 25 August 2011 17:35 (twelve years ago) link
i dunno what the actual dif between zones is but it makes sense to build upscale condos on cheaper land for wider profit margins..
