this is the thread where we talk breathlessly about the best TV show on North American television: THE AMAZING RACE!

Has anyone ever been to one of the Tarcons that Television Without Pity throws at the end of the show and usually the teams ditch the cbs party to attend?

Carey (Carey), Friday, 30 May 2003 17:28 (twenty years ago) link

No, but I've always been heartened that people care enough about the show to do that. At the end of every season I always get afraid that CBS'll cancel it.

Perhaps this summer will finally be the show's triumphant breakthrough to the American public.

slutsky (slutsky), Friday, 30 May 2003 17:30 (twenty years ago) link

i still think one of the greatest elements of that show is when a team thinks they have it made in the shade and are so far ahead and then they just end up waiting till 8 in the morning for something to open up. the looks on their faces as team after team starts showing up to wait with them is always priceless. Especially when they try to pretend like it's no big deal.

scott seward, Friday, 30 May 2003 17:47 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah, I think it's smart that teams can't get too far ahead of the others. Keeps the drama/unpredictability up.

slutsky (slutsky), Friday, 30 May 2003 17:59 (twenty years ago) link

I agree with you on the fact that it's good that teams can't get too far ahead, but there were times last season when Mr. Vietnam and his punching bag wife (well, verbally, at least) were behind, and I was praying that they would finally get knocked off, but then some challenge or whatever would allow all teams to catch up. It's very frustrating when the team you hate is in last place, and then catches up.
Oh, and Scott, I agree with you that the NFL wives shouldn't have been so bitchy early on, but I don't think that normally hurts a team as much as an early fast forward. I still hope they last a few weeks, just because I think they could be interesting.

Jonathan, Friday, 30 May 2003 18:19 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah, it can be frustrating.

(I was hoping Mr. Vietnam would have some traumatic "in country" flashbacks, whirling helicopter blades and all--but I actually liked him better when he was there)

slutsky (slutsky), Friday, 30 May 2003 18:25 (twenty years ago) link

(Really?! I didn't. I thought he was really cocky, kind of giving the whole, wow, these people can be nice. Hmmm.. don't regret blowing the shit out of them, but nice to see they learned how to respect us Americans. I thought he was a pig.
And the way he treated his wife was unbearable.)

Jonathan, Friday, 30 May 2003 18:28 (twenty years ago) link

He was really horrible to be sure. But he seemed a little calmer and more introspective in Vietnam. Maybe it's just me.

(BUT I DID HATE THE FUCKER!)

(though he was pretty fucking good at playing the game I though)

slutsky (slutsky), Friday, 30 May 2003 18:32 (twenty years ago) link

(thought)

slutsky (slutsky), Friday, 30 May 2003 18:33 (twenty years ago) link

flo was even worse than the fascist vet

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Friday, 30 May 2003 19:11 (twenty years ago) link

(i love this show too - missed the first one though... already hate the NFL wives sight unseen)

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Friday, 30 May 2003 19:13 (twenty years ago) link

they're not that bad--I think the other players were a bit rough on them--and when they got the cop to lead them to the airport it was a bit of a triumph

slutsky (slutsky), Friday, 30 May 2003 19:15 (twenty years ago) link

Does anybody know if cab drivers, hotel/airport employees, local authorities, etc. are briefed by TAR staff? The show always seems a little closed-circuit in the paths the players take and the way they always have such useful interactions with third parties (which probably helps keep things organized and entertaining, sure).

gazuga (gazuga), Saturday, 31 May 2003 03:42 (twenty years ago) link

I've always wondered about the logistics--especially the camera operators, who they edit around really really well.

s1utsky (slutsky), Saturday, 31 May 2003 05:18 (twenty years ago) link

so anyway, venice was nice and all and the eyes wide shut thing was an inspired touch. can't say that i even remember the team that got kicked off though. also, if the n.f.l. wives make it one more week i just might start rooting for them. But only if they can stop talking about how people think they are pampered cuz of their life of luxury. i would believe them about the life of luxury if it weren't for the fact that i have seen way too many episodes of mtv's cribs. sports star's homes are invariably half-empty McMansions with a big fishtank and 4 S.U.V.'s in the driveway. not MY idea of luxury, but you know, whatever.

scott seward, Friday, 6 June 2003 10:26 (twenty years ago) link

I thought this thread was going to be about white supremacists.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 6 June 2003 10:33 (twenty years ago) link

harf

Yeah, I didn't think this was the best episode--not enough locations really. That snow-rafting thing looked fun as hell, but it wasn't much of a challenge. And I was somewhat confused during all the train station whatnot.

But yeah, the eyes wide shut business was kind of amusing. Looked kind of rough for that one NFL wife who was in there forever. I actually kind of like them. (and good for the air-traffic controllers for using the fast-forward--that was a smart move)

s1utsky (slutsky), Friday, 6 June 2003 16:41 (twenty years ago) link

oh shit, how much better was this week's episode than last? the confrontation over the carriages, the asthma attack--THE AMAZING RACE IS BACK!!!

s1utsky (slutsky), Friday, 13 June 2003 00:41 (twenty years ago) link

Also it's apparently doing pretty well in the ratings, finally, which is good news for everyone.

s1utsky (slutsky), Friday, 13 June 2003 00:42 (twenty years ago) link

yeah, there was a lot going on! and it's official- I'm rooting for the n.f.l. wives as much as i'm rooting for anyone else. i even feel bad now for the one model who has to do everything. boy, did she pick the wrong friend to go with.the ending was good too. i didn't really like that one team, but getting the wrong train tickets...that was a nightmare.

scott seward, Friday, 13 June 2003 15:58 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah, that other model is just horrible. makes me gnash my teeth.

s1utsky (slutsky), Friday, 13 June 2003 16:01 (twenty years ago) link

it's like a bad dream where the one is doing everything she can and she has this whining crybaby chained to her across the world!

scott seward, Friday, 13 June 2003 16:35 (twenty years ago) link

It's Fuzzy and the Bitch all over again, man.

s1utsky (slutsky), Friday, 13 June 2003 17:12 (twenty years ago) link

I've watched a few eps and have yet to have TAR's hooks sink into me. What do you find so entertaining about this? (ps I'm a medium-core Survivor guy.)

Leee (Leee), Friday, 13 June 2003 17:16 (twenty years ago) link

OK, so I watched this last night also and marveled at just how asinine everyone was.

I'm rooting for the air traffic controllers.

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Friday, 13 June 2003 18:40 (twenty years ago) link

What do you find so entertaining about this?

About a race around the world?

s1utsky (slutsky), Friday, 13 June 2003 18:44 (twenty years ago) link

Unless it's done in 80 days, I'm not wowed.

Leee (Leee), Sunday, 15 June 2003 04:17 (twenty years ago) link

It's done in 30 days! Even more exciting!

s1utsky (slutsky), Sunday, 15 June 2003 04:47 (twenty years ago) link

Revive!

It took a while, but I'm thoroughly hooked. I'm actually sad to see T&A lose -- what better entertainment than two blondes bickering pointlessly?

Leee (Leee), Friday, 11 July 2003 19:56 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah. And one of them (the stoic-seeming one) I really liked.

I fucking hate the "engaged couple." they are so evil. all that mole stuff, fuck.

But you gotta have a team you love to hate.

s1utsky (slutsky), Friday, 11 July 2003 20:24 (twenty years ago) link

The wife (or fiancee to be precise) I like don't hate, maybe it's just because she's a redhead, but her man is a complete jerkoff. While I did unfortunately laff, when he goosed her on the train he totally was out of bounds, a point that he avoided confronting with his slimy laff.

Leee (Leee), Friday, 11 July 2003 20:32 (twenty years ago) link

They're both slimeballs. At least that's how I see it--smug and mean.

s1utsky (slutsky), Friday, 11 July 2003 21:13 (twenty years ago) link

Oh well.

Go clowns!

Leee (Leee), Friday, 11 July 2003 21:21 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah, they seem pretty good-hearted.

So the show won the best Reality TV award at the Emmys! maybe we'll get another season!

too much for my mirror (too much for my mirror), Monday, 22 September 2003 13:24 (twenty years ago) link

still, not as good as the Mole. Which can only be properly hosted by Anderson Cooper, the man with two last names.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 22 September 2003 13:42 (twenty years ago) link

OK! Applications are being accepted for next season. WHO WANNA BE MY PARTNER AND WIN A MILLION BUCKS!?!?!

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 22 September 2003 13:45 (twenty years ago) link

Are Canadians allowed?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 22 September 2003 13:45 (twenty years ago) link

reading upthread, I noticed that after the clowns were ousted, nobody much cared, huh?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 22 September 2003 14:01 (twenty years ago) link

No Canadians, sorry.

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 22 September 2003 14:04 (twenty years ago) link

I liked the clowns! They had good hearts.

s1utsky (slutsky), Monday, 22 September 2003 14:11 (twenty years ago) link

OK I just scrolled up and realized I said the exact same thing about them two months ago.

s1utsky (slutsky), Monday, 22 September 2003 14:11 (twenty years ago) link

I smell a statscock whore...

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 22 September 2003 14:14 (twenty years ago) link

Put that as your occupation on the application form. That way when you're onscreen it'll say "Statscock Whore" under your name.

s1utsky (slutsky), Monday, 22 September 2003 14:22 (twenty years ago) link

Phil-Two
Statscock Whore, Delaware

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 22 September 2003 14:31 (twenty years ago) link

PS, I didn't mean that nobody cared about the clowns, just the opposite. After they left, there wasn't much to cheer for.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 22 September 2003 14:34 (twenty years ago) link

Delaware? :(

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 22 September 2003 14:35 (twenty years ago) link

I don't know where you're from (I just can't keep track), but Delaware seems to fit nice beside Statscock Whore.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 22 September 2003 14:58 (twenty years ago) link

Phil, me and you, we'll be the Asian Odd Couple.

Leee (Leee), Monday, 22 September 2003 19:31 (twenty years ago) link

I guess not?

Matt Groening's Cousin (Leee), Monday, 11 April 2011 01:49 (thirteen years ago) link

I am! Yeah, the goths are just terrible people who seem totally unaware of what assholes they are. (WTF with pushing that poor guy out of the taxi?!) Very happy to see whatsherface and her irritating dad go home, though.

lindseykai, Monday, 11 April 2011 03:21 (thirteen years ago) link

zomg, the taxi jacking was so messed up. Their in-game prick-act -- e.g. lying to Gary, lying about their missed flight -- I can understand and don't get much of a dander over, but seriously, abusing/messing with the locals? That's something I'd expect from Jaime (& Cara, but not Cara).

Total lulz though for Mallory digging through dung, redux.

Matt Groening's Cousin (Leee), Monday, 11 April 2011 04:03 (thirteen years ago) link

can't see Mallory without seeing the SNL version of Miley Cyrus.

Damn being on the west coast missed the episode tonight.

NoShoutsNoCalls (Leee), Monday, 2 May 2011 04:04 (thirteen years ago) link

Don't want to spoil it for you but the outcome was totally justified. I want SNL's Miley Cyrus and her dad to win. Two-hour finale next week.

Gukbe, Monday, 2 May 2011 04:09 (thirteen years ago) link

Finally watched it, and I was wondering for 90% of the episode how you could possibly have a hate-on for Zev and Justin.

Pulling for Jen & Kisha!

did anyone else see the survivor guy's rip-off show on abc? how shameless can you get? the host even sounds exactly like phil! i mean, dude, you're the survivor guy, aim higher!

scott seward, Friday, 24 June 2011 19:59 (twelve years ago) link

and they had this long-ass ford commercial starring the survivor guy talking about how glad he is that he has ford suvs to drive while he makes his amazing race rip-off show and i swear it made the whole show seem like an infomercial for ford.

scott seward, Friday, 24 June 2011 20:00 (twelve years ago) link

It was pretty weak, and chock full of annoying stereotypes to boot.

Gukbe, Friday, 24 June 2011 20:04 (twelve years ago) link

Also the winning team gets $150,000. At $50,000 a piece, they might as well have played Wipeout for an afternoon.

33rd season premiere was last night. A wrinkle is that they made it three episodes before covid cancelled things in 2020, so I guess when they got the all-clear they just picked up where they left off. The season premiere is therefore all pre-covid, but I think after the next episode it's ... well, not post-covid, but some months later. Curious how that plays out. Like, what if a couple broke up in between?

Speaking of couples, the teams this season lean kind of hard on novelties - a lot of youtube/reality people - but there are some compelling pairings. For example, two best friends, one of whom was wrongfully imprisoned for a decade. Or the guys that stopped that terrorist on a train in France. And some other folks, too.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 7 January 2022 02:58 (two years ago) link

OK, this is kind of interesting, in a time capsule sort of way. At the end of the second episode there is a *19 month* leap forward. Some teams do not return to resume the race (with no explanation), some previously eliminated teams get to come back, some people have lost their jobs, some have had family members die of covid, travel going forward is on chartered flights but otherwise generally avoiding public transportation in favor of driving, people are wearing masks, we suspect challenges were re-considered with social distancing in mind ... kind of surreal.
