"Let's ROOOOOCCCCCKK!"
- Perry Farrell of Jane's Addiction in "Had a Dad"

There's a really brief "Yayuh!" courtesy of the late Layne Staley in the middle of "Them Bones" by Alice in Chains that just kicks a giant tub of ass.

"Play that harmonica, son!" Frank Zappa in "Trouble Every Day" I think.

"Kick it!" Beasty Boys - "Fight for Your Right..."

And on the opposite tip: "That's plenty, studio." MES on the last track of the first LP ("Music Scene"?).

Three or four times on Fire by the Electric Six does Dick Valentine illicit a solo by saying "SOLO!" with great zeal and authority. It's most gratifying.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 2 August 2003 03:05 (twenty years ago) link

yeah to whoever mentioned "c'mon steve hit it!" def leppard - armageddon it. carl perkins is ace for encouraging the old rocking out "go cat go!" and i never go a day without talking about "talk dirty to me " by poison - "cc pick up that guitar and-ah, tawwwk to me!"

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Saturday, 2 August 2003 03:07 (twenty years ago) link

yeah, I always loved that "c'mon Steve hit it" thing too. "Armageddon It" is probably my favorite song from the record.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Saturday, 2 August 2003 03:10 (twenty years ago) link

Right before the guitar solo in "Kings & Queens" by Killing Joke (one of only a small handful of songs with actual guitar solos in them by the band), there's an incredibly brief break wherein then-drummer Big Paul Ferguson grunts manfully, prompting Geordie to rip back into the proceedings with a carpet bombing of jagged, angular notes. Brilliantastic!

I suddenly remember the various invocations to "Take it, Jake!" in the history of the Raunchy Young Lepers. This makes sense, he was for the longest time the only one who knew how to play anything.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 3 August 2003 20:41 (twenty years ago) link

okay it's not really rock, and it's not the middle of the song,it's to sorta introduce the rocky outro of the song but it's still great...

"hand's up lads, i think theres some people who (Mu Mu) are a bit shy, muu muu as the KLF would say"

and then onto repeating the chorus for a last few goes

"And all the pop stars star at the length of hair,oh oh oh Kylie's got a crush on us!"...

Prince - Cream - "Look up in the air, it's your guitar"

Pretenders - Middle of the Road - "Brrrrrrr, nyowwww!"

In some other Pretenders song (live cut maybe?), Chrissie eggs on the band with a sly "Girls?..." Laurie Anderson pulls the same trick, only it's a Harmonizer-processed trio of her own voice that responds.

"And the colored girls go..."

"CC pick up that guitar and talk to me!"-Poison

Tom Petty's "HEY!" before the solo in "Even the Losers" is a pretty euphoric moment.

In "The Cover of the Rolling Stone" when Dr. Hook yells out "ROCK AND ROLLLLLLL!!!!!"... and you hear this atrocious out-of-tune electric guitar solo by a guy that clearly can't play the guitar to save his life and at the end Dr.'s like "Aw man, that's beautiful."
