Machinedrum hardly seems notable enough to merit trolling.

and that's probably why i didn't

This guy makes great music, but he really does look like a tit.

hasn't captured my attention like room(s), which is an unbelievably good record

I've listened once, sounded pretty bitching. Really digging the aforementioned old skool jungle influence.

It's a wonderful album. I haven't listened to Room(s) for a while but it sounds = to or better, such a sumptuous sound.

Yeah this is superb. Only listened twice and it might be favourite electronic album of the year.

Popped this on at work today, love all the tunes except for Eyesdontlie which gets on my nerves with the excessive overplay of the pitch shifted vocal loop, but the rest is just utterly glorious.
I never did listen to Room(s) so this is a great opportunity to check it out.

I wasn't expecting to enjoy this above and beyond mild appreciation but both 'Center Your Love' and 'Rise N Fall' are amazing.
― Matt DC, Monday, 28 October 2013 19:55 (ten years ago) link
I really want to like this less than I do based on his ridiculous appearance but this is undeniably good.
― boxedjoy, Monday, 28 October 2013 21:18 (ten years ago) link
Seriously, barring him wearing something that id's him as a nazi cannibal - who gives a shit what he looks like?
― Damo Suzuki's Parrot, Monday, 28 October 2013 23:57 (ten years ago) link
Room(s) is the better record, this feels like a rehash/refinement. Leading off with "gunshotta" is a detriment to the album, nothing else leaves as good an impression. "center your love" is a nice Boards of Canada track. What am I gonna do with these useless art cards? Gimme a basic jewel case, this shit does nothing for the music.
― braunld (Lowell N. Behold'n), Tuesday, 29 October 2013 03:38 (ten years ago) link
I am still very down with this album, jamming it a lot lately
it's a different feeling than "Room(s)" but that's okay with me
― the tune was space, Tuesday, 29 October 2013 03:44 (ten years ago) link
This doesn't feel anything like Room(s) to me, rhythmically or otherwise.
― Matt DC, Tuesday, 29 October 2013 09:50 (ten years ago) link
this is very much of the same sound palette as Room(s)... maybe the rhythms are more streamlined, or pared down on Vapor City? Some of these beats recall his various remixes and tracks on the nastyfukk ep... Room(s) has an abundance of good-great tracks, much of this is weaker in comparison. imo
dreamy track w/the spare beat (clap delay), Drive-esque bass line is nice/different. dig the filtering and rapid-fire kicks on "eye don't lie," it recalls Squarepusher's "Journey to Reedham/9:30 am mix," sorta.
i'm annoyed that Ninja Tune's site couldn't process my paypal payment attempts, after trying to buy the cd for two weeks. FWIW, the album (CD) is priced cheap (bundled w/mp3s) on the Ninja Tune website (w/supposed free international shipping). Couldn't get it to work, though
some of the Vapor City vibe recalls this remix of a Bonobo track: http://youtu.be/6qmVNB4nalk
― braunld (Lowell N. Behold'n), Tuesday, 29 October 2013 23:13 (ten years ago) link
alright, "dont 1 2 lose u" is dope, and the art cards *smell* good.
― braunld (Lowell N. Behold'n), Saturday, 2 November 2013 04:23 (ten years ago) link
found vapor city pleasant, well-listenable, etc, but still skipping several tracks. it's like he minimized the 'dirt' that made room(s) lively and dynamic. on rooms, the kicks have more weight, snare cracks have a REPORT, and the background tonal washes are gaseous, expansive -- more space between the components in general. "Door(s)" ends up with the lower register elements all blown out and overdriven, almost as if he just fucked around and kept the results. there are still raw bits on vapor city, but they're nearly sanded off/obscured. maybe a poor analogy, but similar to jim o'rourke's rock stuff, and the polish he applied to a couple of sonic youth's albums. the dirt has a sort of finer grain, it's well-sanded and finished. like made into a toy music, figurines, etc.

heh
Which has surprised you the most? The Machinedrum one, 'Rooms' - I didn't necessarily think that was gonna do well because I thought it was almost watered down footwork, but it really connected with a lot of people and that became a scene-defining record. I thought that it was another sort of post-garage, influenced by footwork, record. It was just the right kind of watered down that people like, I s'pose. Influences were watered down on both sides and it coalesced into something very easygoing.

So, Human Energy then. Haven't heard anything this guy's done before, and only found out about this record cos Dawn Richard is on it, but I'm two thirds of the way through and loving it.

― boxedjoy, Wednesday, 19 October 2016 10:17 (seven years ago) link
It's extremely brightly coloured, I didn't really expect this from him, closer to Glass Swords or the last Hudson Mohawke record than his previous records, but with the same frenetic approach to rhythm. I like it but some of it feels half-realised and it didn't quite live up to the frankly awesome promise of the first couple of minutes.

Theoretically I have mixed feelings abou my this Jamie XX move, but in practice I love it pretty unproblematically.
― Tim F, Thursday, 20 October 2016 20:43 (seven years ago) link
I don't really hear this as a Jamie XX move? That would imply this was grey, lifeless, limp, unengaging, etc. I can imagine this actually provoking a response.
― boxedjoy, Saturday, 22 October 2016 14:12 (seven years ago) link
this feels lively and fresh, compared to Vapor City. it sounds like he's moving beyond his regular template/formula, with more immediate pop elements and flashiness.. dig the bright, colorful, up front quality of the sounds. i read a lot of negative talk about the new album, pleasantly surprised
― braunld (Lowell N. Behold'n), Saturday, 22 October 2016 21:29 (seven years ago) link
FWIW I'd be very happy with an entirely Machinedrum-produced Dawn album. They seem a pretty good fit for one another.

Well, that's what's you're getting (see Dawn thread)
:)

I've decided I don't like Human Energy, too much focus on pyrotechnics over atmosphere, too many cheesy arse singers. A lot of it sets my teeth on edge, as accomplished as it is.

check out Folding Time, the recent Sepalcure album.. it's got Machinedrum vibes, but more varied/dynamic--it's less exhausting

Good suggestion on the Sepalcure. Human Energy tires me in the same way Prefuse 73 does (now).
