you think? sounds great to me, rly looking forward to hearing her songy songs with that production vibe.

Merdeyeux, Tuesday, 19 June 2012 02:14 (eleven years ago) link

idk, sounds more generic in that dark, witch house-y style that has become popular for indie songstresses

There's not much to this song besides the sound of it, which is a sound I'm partial to. Hopefully other new songs will have some more substance.

never fail to lol @ "assbring" whenever this thread is bumped

I do really like the mood of this new track but it bothers me, because the one problem her songs have always faced is that they could with being fleshed out ever-so-slightly, not reduced to production effects and vocal mutilation. The EPDM of Love Is Not Pop is very different to the one of the first two albums, and it's that one I love - I can't fault her for wanting to try something different and push herself artistically again, but that album is so brilliant that it's hard to see a departure from that style as a better move.

I think this new album is really good, it totally makes sense that Saint Etienne have remixed the lead single which interpolates "Unfinished Sympathy" because those are the two most obvious influences on this, i.e it is very 90s. Not quite the change of direction I feared upthread - there's still all the Fleetwood Mac and lush sunset vibes - but still enough to be a pretty distinct prospect from Love Is Not Pop.

So nobody else really cared about this follow-up, which is kinda sad

i cared, it is really great. it is not even a follow up; what preceded it is a run up.

I've always been a fan of her sense of poise and restraint but this just feels underwritten. That said, the last two were the definitions of "growers" so who knows with this one.

i mean everything about this album appropriates and fetishizes asian culture to an astounding degree so

Josh is right about the new album, but it's still surprising it got zero traction. There's some nice songs, but it's not a great record.
