He was in a Gap TV ad; so, fuck him.

Thank you, I will. Wait, I'm thinking of the wrong guy.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 29 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I liked his guitar playing with Jane's Addiction, other wise very baw- ring. Anyone who would voluntarily join RHCP at the moment in time he chose will win no respect from me.

Haven't heard the album, with no plans to (loved JA by the way), but spoiled people feeling sorry for themselves = CLASSIC, as well as the true basis of rock. When truly disadvantaged people feel sory for themselves it's a bit unseemly, plus it's folk music.

Once of the funniest things that Pitchfork has ever written was a few weeks back. It was the headline: "Dave Navarro is Unacceptable."

I read the article on him in Spin and afterwards I vowed never to utter his name again. What he has become is complete comedy. From the low cut leather pants to the "buff" soul patch and perfectly styled hair, he couldn't scream "LA glam pussy" any louder. But I just HAD to watch him on Conan O'Brien just to see how cheesy he had become. I watched with sick delight as he was every bit as bad as I'd imagined. Not only was the song worse than even your standard Creed fare, his personal style and affectations were downright pukeworthy.

And I actually like JA and his guitar playing in that band.

Tim Baier, Friday, 29 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I did worship JA and still will -- the real thing, not the current walking cadaver (Eric A is and remains my favorite member for *not* giving in to that whole mess, god bless him). So knowing Dave's slid down this slope... I had hopes for the Deconstruction album, was waiting for it for so long, turned out to be not much. And then, as Nicole noted, he ended up with the Chili Peppers. SATAN!

Ned Raggett, Friday, 29 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

The only reason why anyone still gives an ASS about JA is that they quit the right time. Something which they are completely blowing right now. Perry Farrell has always been any annoying, self absorbed sonofabitch, so lucky for them by the time that the media had caught up with him enough that we could all hear his inane banter and realize that he's full of shit, JA was history and building their hype with a pretty corpse. It was the early 90s and the time was ripe for people (me included) to believe that "alternative" was still a thing. By the mid 90s and that whole Porno for Pyros debacle, Perry still had the mic and continued his "alterna-as-fuck" persona, but I think by that time most people had become wise to his game. Navarro, who has obviously blown his wad in JA, got a makeover from LA dirtball to LA glam-puss and sputtered a couple of clunky chords for the RHCP until they decided that his amount of cheese was beginning to upstage even Keidis'.

The hilarious thing is now that Farrell and Navarro deserve each other. Neither has cred. Both have crashed and burned on the fame game. Both are washed up, if they were ever afloat to begin with (was it smoke and mirrors?). Now they come crawling back to each other in an attempt to find a kindered spirit. I bet they tell each other every day what a genius the other is.

"Dave, lets make like its 1991 again." "OK Perry, lets go pick up some speed and some chicks who will give our tortured, artistic souls blowjobs, for that is what we need as brilliante artistes." Both: "Right on!"

Tim Baier, Friday, 29 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Was never a huge JA fan, but I always liked their fans. They just seemed like the best sort of goth/glam/hippie/punk mix, not jaded or elitist at all. Has there ever been an "indifferent to the band/love the fans" thread?

Or how about a "Taking Sides: Dave Navarro vs. John Frusciante" thread? Although I really can't stand the Chili Peppers (except for that lovely falsetto harpy chorus in "Under the Bridge") I'm really into John Frusciante. He's the classiest burnout in rock.

Arthur, Friday, 29 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Frusciante's solo albums are surprisingly brilliant, I think. The only thing associated with the Chili Peppers that's worth the time...

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 1 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Frusciante is fantastic. Musically, the albums the he has done with the RHCP have been really amazing. I often find myself grooving to the beginning of a new radio song only to have my hopes dashed when Keidis' crooning chimes in. (One of my friends put it best in a review of Californication asking, "Why does Anthony Keidis continually shit all over his bandmates' best efforts?") Frusciante has brilliantly twisted lines that give a great counterpoint to the straight up funk of the rhythm section. I'm really interested in hearing his solo albums although I'm a bit scared that they will be drugged out noodling, which is why I've stayed away thusfar. He has 100 times the guitar genius of Navarro.

Forget about leather .Try to focus on music. "Trust no One" is a good record and Dave 's talent still rules. Ask Billy Corgan how much he owes to Dave. Those who keep adoring Frusciante make me laugh, they all think it's still 1991, angry teenagers headbanging with Give it away or Funky monks and crying along to under the bridge.
Frusciante was an amazing guitarist, and especially "Mother's milk" shows it (not to mention his interesting solo albums), but if you listen for instance to the track "Blood sugar sex magik" at Woodstock 94 with Dave , it's just a higher level. Have you ever seen Frusciante playing live? A big let down, instead.
"One hot minute" is a good record and not a masterpiece, but dave' s magic contributions in "warped", "one hot minute" and "Shalllow be thy game" erase funky flea pissoffs such as aeroplane.
MOreover, "Californication" and "By the way" are the worst records listened in years. Did you miss "Power of equality and Under the bridge"? here we go with "around the world " and "scar tissue". By the way, Welcome to the Red Hot Mama and Papas show, catch a fire in the beach. John remains as lovely outcast as Kurt Cobain, but he's completely forgotten how to use a guitar.
I don't know what will come out of Jane's Addiction relapse, and actually all my love goes to bass player and key member Eric Avery, who spends his life somewhere in LA without giving a fuck about stardom.
Probably, the most important thing is to remember that both jane's Addiction and Red hot chili peppers were outstanding bands that changed american music together with Grunge many years ago.
glad to see you go

with raspy faux sincerity, I guess.

He is kind of a wanker and the solo stuff is oppressive, but I listen to the old Jane's Addiction records and (almost) all is forgiven. I actually saw J.A. at a festival last summer and they were still pretty decent especially considering that they didn't actually play one new song.

Die Dave Navarro DIE! Jane's is great, I still love listening to 'em, but it was definitely a case of the whole being better than the sum of its parts. On their own, each element of the band is pretty boring and one-note... (I do think the Deconstruction album has its moments tho.)

With our society so hung up about sex, yet so comfortable with violence, I think Dave's involvement in this project is a breath of fresh air and real stand for freedom of speech.

We have been biding our time, waiting for the perfect way to fuse porn, rock and celebrity into a dark new artistic vision that will put both the porn and mainstream worlds on notice. I give Dave a lot of credit for having the guts and the true rock star attitude to do what safe, corporate rockers and rappers can't. Porn is not taboo. The real taboo is people's innate fears that they will be judged for embracing sexuality. His movie sets the bar high in terms of intensity and creative expression with a focus that goes beyond the hot sex.

One Hot Minute was the only album that guitarist Dave Navarro recorded with the band. His presence altered the Red Hot Chili Peppers' sound considerably. It contains fewer sexual themes than previous records and explores darker subject matters, such as drug use, depression, anguish, and grief.

Was skimming through Scar Tissue and came across this great line about Dave.

He didn't carry with him the mysterious essence of the funk, but we weren't stressed out about that.

just popped in to say that trust no one is the worst album i've ever purchased before i saw that i already said that three years ago, that moment of teenage folly will be haunting me till the grave

I've heard that "One Hot Minute" is kind of a good RHCP record, but I have not listened to it and possibly never will!
