I got the impression that Bill Oddie won't be invited back to Buzzcocks. From what was shown and the clips shown with the end credits, it seems that he just went on and on and on, some of which was doubtless amusing but some of which........

I can't decide if that's the Amstell persona we're seeing or someone trying to be like Mark Lamarr. Still, the basic concept seems to still work, ie a couple of guests from sort of the music world, a comedian, and someone to make fun of.

I've not given up on it yet, but it's not the "must see" viewing it was some years ago.

I haven't watched this prog since about the second week it was on (Lamarr and Jupitus and Sean Hughes... not for me I fear)

Why was Oddie on? I thought it was all pop peeps except for the team captains? Can they not even get Dolf Datsun level celebs anymore?

Raw Patrick (Raw Patrick), Friday, 10 November 2006 13:43 (seventeen years ago) link

There have always been lots of comedians of various sorts on the programme, so he was not atypical in that way.

I think he was on for the lame-o let's-all-laugh-at-the-clueless-old-duffer angle, like when Boris Johnson is on Have I Got News For You. Last night's was the first I have seen for about two years. It was kind of rubbish. Amstell was just Lamarr-lite (same scriptwriters, innit?)

When did Stewart Lee finally complete his transformation into Morrissey, by the way?

He's pretty much as when he was on "Pop World" on C4/T4, or whatever it was called.

Amstell's at least going off-script, ad-libbing at times (ie, the Shakira/hat gag), compared to Lamarr's rigid THIS IS WHAT GUYS WHO COULDN'T GET TO WRITE GAGS FOR THEY THINK IT'S ALL OVER WROTE, AND SO THAT'S THE GAGS WE'RE GONNA HAVE approach.

And, y'know, Amstell's a truly talented decent presenter (although after that shitty Sunday morning thing he did a few years back, I fear he's not gonna have a decent post-Popworld outlet). Lamarr's a bitter fucking hack.

Bit of a guilty pleasure, this show. The missus has always quite liked it but I usually wince through it as the celebs trot out their scripted witticisms and, in the Lamarr era, there was also the nasty, relentless sexism.

But last night was good - Oddie was terrifically awkward and I enjoyed Amstell listing the current Radio 1 DJs..."it's just not good enough, is it?" You could imagine that being a Lamarr line but, in keeping with his sour schtick, it wouldn't have had much impact.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Friday, 10 November 2006 15:41 (seventeen years ago) link

relentless sexism is carried on by merely being a sausage party last night. inc the line up.

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Friday, 10 November 2006 15:54 (seventeen years ago) link

They seem to have remixed/reworked the theme. The effect is similar to the shift from series 1 to series 2 of Space: 1999.

I'm intrigued enough by Simon Amstell to have booked to see his stand up show in London in October. It got very mixed reviews at the Edinburgh Festival.

He is a consummate artist at needling people, but can he carry a full show by himself?

I think it's OK so far. Noel is a good choice as stand in for Bill. Last weeks episode with Cheggers was funny, particularly Amstell's line about "at first glance Keith might sound like a poor booking, but he's the most famous person here!". One thing I don't like though is that "Parkinson" style extreme close up on people's faces.

Probably a good move, quit while he's ahead, etc.. I wasn't sick of him, but I could imagine that another series with him as host would have left me disinterested. Sayle's "you're shit!" heckle while Amstell was dressed as a rabbit was in jest but hit a nerve for me. Maybe it was the abscence of Bill Bailey for most of the last series, but it felt like it was more about Amstell's set pieces rather than the interplay between the team captains and the hosts.
Anyway, BBC should a) glue Bailey to that captain's chair, and b) get some of the people who were guest team captains back on as guest hosts. Starting with Stephen Fry.
