when all i wanna do is enjoy a few drinks after a long week without breaking the bank.

-- Surmounter (rra12...) (webmail), January 20th, 2007. (rra123)

just want to make sure the utter absurdity of this statement isn't lost. a few drinks after one week would call for a tip of around 3 bucks as minimally appropriate. that's all the dude would have to spend. 3 bucks a week. and he's complaining that this 3 bucks will "break the bank." seriously, man, examine what's going on with your life that lead to these circumstances. if 3 dollars is too much for you to afford, and you're still spending your money in bars, you need a therapist.

I'm an ex-waitress and a lavish tipper. It's only a little bit of money for the customer, but if they all do it, it adds up to an okay living for the waiter. Which they deserve—I've worked a lot of jobs and restaurant work was the highest-stress of all. Even if the customers are nice, the hustle is unbelievable.

$5 a beer doesn't make it any cheaper in the US than in the UK
and a pint's a pint
but presumably cutty's complaint is based on spirits not being poured liberally by hand (tho they are in my local bar :D in fact why i'm not there right now i have no idea)

vita susicivus (blueski), Saturday, 20 January 2007 19:28 (9 years ago) Permalink

Oh, the spirits thing is some crazy bullshit. The Spanish are good with spirits, you get four or five times the amount you get in the UK for the same price.

jimn (jimnaseum), Saturday, 20 January 2007 19:31 (9 years ago) Permalink

i guess it's really the price of the drinks. bars are so dumb sometimes - it's like dim lighting, overpriced drinks and people trying to be sexy

i think the tipping, for me, is the straw that breaks the camel's back

it's like jesus, i have to pay 5 dollars for a 99 cent beer and then a dollar on top of it to kiss the bartender's ass who's trying too hard to be cool serving me my drink.

i like the tab actually. a lot.

Surmounter (rra123), Saturday, 20 January 2007 19:40 (9 years ago) Permalink

or rather the idea of the tab - i'm not in the practice of running them. maybe i'll become one of those people that opens tabs a lot. i have a friend like that. she's always handing bartenders her card.

I paid £7 for a gin and tonic in Stockholm last week, which had 10ml of gin in (compared to 35ml here).

that's why i don't drink beer in bars (the price of the beer, not the dollar tip). i know it's silly because it's about the location and not the beer itself, but i'd rather at least order a drink with more ingredients than i have in the fridge at home.

Maria (Maria), Saturday, 20 January 2007 20:23 (9 years ago) Permalink

You drinkers on a budget—why are you out at a bar to begin with? If you're that broke you should buy your beer by the case and take it home to your miserable basement apartment.

for fuck's sake! if you're so broke that $3 in tips (for 3 drinks purchased over the course of a night) breaks the bank, then as has been said you shouldn't be going out drinking. bars are businesses. drinking cheaply in one isn't your god-given right.

re: tipping in australia, by a yank

drinks are pretty expensive and staff is reportedly better-paid upfront than in the usa. so no tipping, i was told. but: some places (mainly restaurants, it seems) add a 10% surcharge on holidays (which is fine, i guess), or sundays (which is less fine), or saturdays (which is ridiculous).

also, service wasn't particularly great, which may or may not have something to do with the lack of tipping. yet aussie bartenders/servers are all over clearing away yr empties--it's more a struggle to get more. weird.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Saturday, 20 January 2007 21:14 (9 years ago) Permalink

10% surcharge on holidays (which is fine, i guess), or sundays (which is less fine), or saturdays (which is ridiculous)

Based on a few months in Australia, I got the impression that they take their weekends rather more (i.e. less) seriously than in the UK or US. Some things even -- gasp! -- shut. The surcharge is related to the fact that restaurant probably pays its staff time-and-a-half or double time over the weekend.

Also, re: this thread and the many, many others. Why do people find tipping so confusing and infuriating? Americans and Brits drive on different sides of the road, and no one gets confused or infuriated by that. And NO ONE feels the need to defend their country's choice. It's merely a convention. Things be different in different parts of the world. Find out how tipping works, fit in (or don't), and forget about it.

no but honestly. drinks cost what like half the bottle would cost, and i'm supposed to give them MORE?

Buy a whole bottle, mix, serve, and drink it in your home. Or in the park or on the train, perhaps. Either way, then you won't have to put out the extra money for overhead like the edifice, cost of operations, and service.

it's not my job to subsidize theirs.

Yes, it is. Or more accurately, it is your obligation under this country's tipping system. Otherwise you are guilty of the offense of theft of services AND the more serious crime of aggrivated douchebaggery.

In other words (polyphonic's):

If you don't like tipping, don't drink in bars. Period.

isnt it a problem that there will always be douchebags that don't tip, and so the rest that do tip end up having to pay more to get the servers on a income level comparable to if they were just paid a straight wage?
so assuming income stays at the same level under both systems, instituting tipping effectively takes money from the nice people and gives it to the douchebags. how is this good?

4 months pass...

That's another wrinkle that many people don’t know about, right? Tipping in the United States actually dates back to slavery.

The origin of tipping is really the feudal system, it’s this idea of noblesse oblige. But when tipping came to the United States, it had a real racial tinge to it, because, originally, the workers who earned tips were almost exclusively black workers—they were newly freed slaves.

There was this massive anti-tipping movement to protest the practice, a resounding populist movement that actually got anti-tipping bills passed in six states across the country, including Washington state and many southern states. What’s interesting is that that movement, the anti-tipping populist one, ending up spreading to Europe and succeeding, because the labor movement picked it up and said ‘we are professionals, and we shouldn’t have to live on tips, because we should be paid by our employers.’ That’s why you see so little tipping in Europe. What we started here spread there and actually killed it at the origin in Europe.

We, on the other hand, went in the opposite direction in the states. The restaurant industry, which was hiring newly freed slaves as tipped workers, really wanted the right to hire these workers but pay them next to nothing. So they put forth this idea that they were valueless and really shouldn’t have to be paid by their employers. They essentially made the argument that newly freed slaves should get a zero dollar wage.

And part of the racial divide, part of what made tipping such a race-specific practice, is that there was a cultural stigma where white people would balk at the idea of being tipped because they found it degrading?

Exactly. In fact, among the six states that passed tipping bans, five of them were southern states, and it was based on this idea that black workers were the only workers making tips, because there was this idea that you only tip inferiors. That is what I mean when I say the origins are noblesse oblige. The origin is that you tip an inferior. When the practice came to the United States, the newly freed slaves, the black workers, were the equivalent of the proletariat in the feudal system. When these states banned tipping, it was because they were trying to discourage whites from tipping instead of actually paying former slaves.

tipping isn't just historically a form of noblesse oblige. And for workers, it's another example of capitalist practice in America, where it is possible to "make a lot of money if you work hard," that element of self-determination and hustling that doesn't seem as present in European countries with more socialist policies and greater social safety nets.

Semi-relatedly, are other sales/service jobs that get a substantial amount of their compensation from commissions and bonuses based on revenue generated for the company by that worker as prevalent in the UK/Europe as they are here in the U.S.?

Plenty of sales jobs would have a substantial revenue-earned related bonus/component, no idea if the ratio of basic salary in these roles or if the ratio of these types of roles to overall workforce is comparable tho

http://www.nytimes.com/2016/05/13/business/joes-crab-shack-tried-getting-rid-of-tips-it-didnt-last-long.html

In one closely watched case, Joe’s Crab Shack has decided to revert to accepting tips at most of its trial locations, six months after announcing that it would become the nation’s first major restaurant chain to test a no-tipping policy at 18 locations.

The casual seafood chain, which is based in Houston and has more than 130 restaurants nationwide, raised its menu prices at the test sites and said it gave higher, fixed wages to its staff. At the time, Ray Blanchette, then the chief executive of its parent company, Ignite Restaurant Group, called tipping “an antiquated model.”

But Bob Merritt, the new chief executive, announced in a conference call with investors and analysts last week that the company was cutting back the experiment and that it would continue at just four restaurants, according to Nation’s Restaurant News.

Company research had found that 60 percent of the restaurants’ customers disliked the change in tipping, Mr. Merritt said. They wanted to inspire good service with their tips and they didn’t trust management to pass on the money to its employees, he said.

OK, can anyone explain this controversy to me? I heard an American on a podcast say "This is terrible: Uber said they were tipping the driver for us, but it turns out that's not true!" If the tip is an automated %, then what's the distinction between the money in this "tip" and the money in the drivers' cut of the fare?

Shouldn't people just care how much money the driver gets from the fare overall?

Are the complainers implying that they knew exactly how much Uber cut the drivers and were calculating that there was extra money on top of that figure?

being tipped is being paid at someone's discretion or seemingly at someone's discretion if there's no hint of discretion it's not a tip it's just a payment

tipping is weird and makes people think or almost think weird things

It gives a sense of control to the consumer that makes them believe they have power in the transaction, affirming the validity of a class of worker that is more servant that server, paid at our discretion
