when all i wanna do is enjoy a few drinks after a long week without breaking the bank.

just want to make sure the utter absurdity of this statement isn't lost. a few drinks after one week would call for a tip of around 3 bucks as minimally appropriate. that's all the dude would have to spend. 3 bucks a week. and he's complaining that this 3 bucks will "break the bank." seriously, man, examine what's going on with your life that lead to these circumstances. if 3 dollars is too much for you to afford, and you're still spending your money in bars, you need a therapist.

I'm an ex-waitress and a lavish tipper. It's only a little bit of money for the customer, but if they all do it, it adds up to an okay living for the waiter. Which they deserve—I've worked a lot of jobs and restaurant work was the highest-stress of all. Even if the customers are nice, the hustle is unbelievable.

There is some crazy plan here in Ireland to reduce the wages of bar staff in the expectation that they will make it all back in tips, like in America. But this is not America, and people in pubs do not tip.

$5 a beer doesn't make it any cheaper in the US than in the UK
and a pint's a pint
but presumably cutty's complaint is based on spirits not being poured liberally by hand (tho they are in my local bar :D in fact why i'm not there right now i have no idea)

Oh, the spirits thing is some crazy bullshit. The Spanish are good with spirits, you get four or five times the amount you get in the UK for the same price.

i guess it's really the price of the drinks. bars are so dumb sometimes - it's like dim lighting, overpriced drinks and people trying to be sexy

i think the tipping, for me, is the straw that breaks the camel's back

it's like jesus, i have to pay 5 dollars for a 99 cent beer and then a dollar on top of it to kiss the bartender's ass who's trying too hard to be cool serving me my drink.

i like the tab actually. a lot.

I paid £7 for a gin and tonic in Stockholm last week, which had 10ml of gin in (compared to 35ml here).

that's why i don't drink beer in bars (the price of the beer, not the dollar tip). i know it's silly because it's about the location and not the beer itself, but i'd rather at least order a drink with more ingredients than i have in the fridge at home.

for fuck's sake! if you're so broke that $3 in tips (for 3 drinks purchased over the course of a night) breaks the bank, then as has been said you shouldn't be going out drinking. bars are businesses. drinking cheaply in one isn't your god-given right.

re: tipping in australia, by a yank

drinks are pretty expensive and staff is reportedly better-paid upfront than in the usa. so no tipping, i was told. but: some places (mainly restaurants, it seems) add a 10% surcharge on holidays (which is fine, i guess), or sundays (which is less fine), or saturdays (which is ridiculous).

also, service wasn't particularly great, which may or may not have something to do with the lack of tipping. yet aussie bartenders/servers are all over clearing away yr empties--it's more a struggle to get more. weird.

10% surcharge on holidays (which is fine, i guess), or sundays (which is less fine), or saturdays (which is ridiculous)

Based on a few months in Australia, I got the impression that they take their weekends rather more (i.e. less) seriously than in the UK or US. Some things even -- gasp! -- shut. The surcharge is related to the fact that restaurant probably pays its staff time-and-a-half or double time over the weekend.

Also, re: this thread and the many, many others. Why do people find tipping so confusing and infuriating? Americans and Brits drive on different sides of the road, and no one gets confused or infuriated by that. And NO ONE feels the need to defend their country's choice. It's merely a convention. Things be different in different parts of the world. Find out how tipping works, fit in (or don't), and forget about it.

Buy a whole bottle, mix, serve, and drink it in your home. Or in the park or on the train, perhaps. Either way, then you won't have to put out the extra money for overhead like the edifice, cost of operations, and service.

isnt it a problem that there will always be douchebags that don't tip, and so the rest that do tip end up having to pay more to get the servers on a income level comparable to if they were just paid a straight wage?
so assuming income stays at the same level under both systems, instituting tipping effectively takes money from the nice people and gives it to the douchebags. how is this good?

I worked at headquarters for a buffet chain that re-classed many of their employees as "servers" so they could legally reduce their pay below minimum wage.

Can you imagine working a minimum wage job and getting the memo that your wage was being cut?

How did they make them servers? In addition to their standard tasks like restocking the buffet and cleaning tables, they were made to pour coffee, offer deserts, and do a few other server tasks, and had their wages cut for it.

A buffet chain! Have you ever seen someone tip at a buffet chain?

yup; all of my older relatives who were on fixed incomes loved buffet chains (yours in particular) and would always tip 15% on their meals
