Neti pots are all sorts of great. You just have to remember to breathe through your mouth to avoid the "OMG I'M DROWING!" feeling.

My hippie doctor told me to stay away from them when you think it's a sinus infection goin' on up there, as it can spread the badness from one side of your sinus passages to the other.

I'm a big fan of Xlear Nasal Spray. It's got Xylitol in it, with saline solution. Xylitol is some sort of sugar, and one can mix with saline solution themselves for a fraction of the price.

Trayce, Saturday, 28 April 2007 04:38 (seventeen years ago) link

i got no neti pot, but the saline spray bottle approach has worked well. and you don't even really need that. you can just make a mug of warm salt water and basically inhale it and get mostly the same effect. useful for fending off sinus infections. i reckon it works on about the same principles as a salt-water gargle.

I assume Ronan knows about this?

cutty, Sunday, 29 April 2007 14:20 (seventeen years ago) link

btw, the saline spray approach is all fine and good, but if you plan on using something like that everyday (let's say morning and night) it's really going to add up.

getting a neti pot is the cheapest way to actually make nasal irrigation a part of your daily life.

thank you.

river wolf, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 03:26 (seventeen years ago) link

If you just use water, it will sting and probably paralyze all those little waving hairs for awhile. It needs the salt to make the solution isotonic and soothing and a little baking soda (1/2 the amount of salt) buffers it and also works better to thin mucus. Also, make sure it's warm. Gives me a headache if it's too cool.

"Pots, bulbs, other methods might "clean" your nose, sort of - but they're messy, difficult to use, and do not pulsate."

forksclovetofu, Saturday, 26 May 2007 23:34 (sixteen years ago) link

Actually, if the neti pot works for you, I'm all for it. I should buy one and give it a try. I can see the argument in favor of it being gentler but I'm still a believer in pulsatile irrigation. (I don't like the fact that those tips snap off kind of easily on Grossan's own model, but Waterpiks--and I've gone through a bunch--tend to have serious flaws as well.)

Rockist Scientist, Sunday, 27 May 2007 00:29 (sixteen years ago) link

Too hardcore for me. But again, the pot is fuckin' awesome. Totally helping.

three months pass...

Today, after a particularly grueling week of hayfever symptoms, I went and got myself a neti pot, and have just completed my first nasal irrigation. It wasn't difficult or painful, just kind of gross, but I'm breathing really clearly right now, and I think it was probably worth it.

I used 0% urine. Lukewarm water and 1.2 tsp seasalt only.

I'll double the amount of urine tomorrow, and continue to do so until I find the right balance.

two years pass...

My irrigation unit is such a hassle to clean, not to mention various problems with it (like the fact that the on/off switch stopped working not long after I bought it and I have been turning it on by plugging it in, and turning it off by unplugging it--just asking for an electric shock), I've decided to try the neti pot. Just bought a nice ceramic one from the co-op I go to. This was my latest irrigation unit model:

http://www.achooallergy.com/blog/images/sinupulse-elite-front-sm.jpg

Pretty much the cadillac of nasal irrigation units, and still not very well made.

My wife (bless her) gave me a neti pot for my birthday a couple of years ago. It isn't a miracle tool, but it is a useful tool and I've been giving it a solid workout the past two weeks or more - trying to dislodage a sinus infection. It's gone now. I'm down to once a day for maintenance.

I think we talked about it in a Nutrition Nazi thread...there are some WHOA stories

VegemiteGrrl, Friday, 25 March 2011 18:25 (thirteen years ago) link

but it could also be because of the product being used for the colonic that causes all the weird stuff afterwards so there's that too

anyway, back to Neti pots.
