That was a single???

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 17 February 2003 15:50 (twenty-one years ago) link

Great record - and completely recorded and mixed in just under 3 weeks. Something in that silly ass movie really inspired him (Kim Basinger?) at the time, and I think this was the last great piece of work from "classic era" Prince. Nobody could touch something like "Lemon Crush" or "Electric Chair" at the time.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Monday, 17 February 2003 16:13 (twenty-one years ago) link

outrageous self-sampled guitar that is hard to recreate - awesome

s.r.w. (s.r.w.), Monday, 17 February 2003 16:45 (twenty-one years ago) link

As its own album, I'm sure its fine (though far from his finest hour), but I never thought it fit the film in the slightest.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 17 February 2003 17:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

"Partyman" is the worst song on the album and Prince's worst single by miles: DISCUSS.
Well, "Partyman" is to Prince what "Fashion" is to David Bowie. A theoretically dispicable piece of music that for all its flaws is awkwardly catchy and memorably broken. In your saner moments you would hate it (and hit the "skip track" button) but most of the time its like a faintly bad but still compelling smell.
Granted, "Partyman" is better than "Fashion", but thats not saying much.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Monday, 17 February 2003 19:06 (twenty-one years ago) link

Hey! Don't go cuttin' on "Fashion"!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 17 February 2003 19:07 (twenty-one years ago) link

Where the analogy falls down is that "Fashion" works and "Partyman" doesn't. (I would say that being tied to the most embarrassing scene in the movie works against "Partyman" but I had the soundtrack before I saw the movie and disliked that song from day one, so it was more the movie reinforcing preconception.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 17 February 2003 19:16 (twenty-one years ago) link

the fact that i listened to this album every day for a year says something about how i ended up

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 17 February 2003 19:19 (twenty-one years ago) link

one year passes...
I always thought "Trust" was a great song, but only just now did I realize why... he just recycled "Baby I'm a Star" with new lyrics.

also agreed about "Partyman". take it (okay, and maybe "Vikki Waiting" too) out and this album is nigh on perfect.

frankE (frankE), Friday, 15 October 2004 21:33 (nineteen years ago) link

actually, hearing "partyman" sounds a hell of a lot like "daddy pop" from diamonds and pearls, another song i always hated.

frankE (frankE), Friday, 15 October 2004 21:47 (nineteen years ago) link

"Batdance" really should have been nominated for the OMGWTFLOL deal.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 15 October 2004 21:50 (nineteen years ago) link

oh wait. that was '90s. this was 89. never mind.

it's still fucking absurd.

*splutter* Partyman is a great song! One of the best things on the album! This has really grown on me over the years, it's such a strange and unique artifact, on a par with Sun Ra's "Batman" album for sheer bizarreness.

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 15 October 2004 21:55 (nineteen years ago) link

it's still fucking absurd.

fucking absurdly great, you mean.

frankE (frankE), Friday, 15 October 2004 21:57 (nineteen years ago) link

*splutter* Partyman is a great song!

it wasn't as bad as i remembered it to be, but as i mentioned above, it sure as fuck sounds way too much like "daddy pop".

frankE (frankE), Friday, 15 October 2004 21:58 (nineteen years ago) link

I don't think I could possibly listen to this now outside of the realm of weird nostalgia/novelty. It's mostly preposterous.
Though the 2nd half of the lyrics to "Batdance" are the work of some kind of lunatic genius:

"Hey Ducky, let me stick the 7-inch
In the computer
HA, HA, HA
Hey, we got the power
Oh, we got the soul
Hey, we got to sho'nuff get off
2 make the devil go, go

"This town needs an enema!"

"I'm gonna kill U"
POWER
"I'm not gonna kill U"
SOUL
"I'm gonna kill U"
POWER
"I'm not gonna kill U"
SOUL
Let's do it
"I'm BATMAN"
BATMAN
Don't stop dancin'
"I'm BATMAN"
BATMAN
Don't stop dancin'
Do it, do it, do it, do it
BATMAN, BATMAN, BATMAN
Don't stop, don't stop
Let's do it
Don't stop dancin'
Let's do it, BATMAN
Let's do it, BATMAN
Don't stop dancin'
Don't stop dancin'
No, damn it! Turn the music back up!
You son of a bitch!

"Have you ever heard of the healing power of laughter?"

Who's gonna stop 200 balloons?
Nobody!
Batman
Stop!"

Taxi Dancing in the Soft Prison (Ben Boyer), Friday, 15 October 2004 21:59 (nineteen years ago) link

fucking absurdly great, you mean.

same difference

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 15 October 2004 22:08 (nineteen years ago) link

Holy fuck. "Scandalous" sounds a hell of a lot like "The Beautiful Ones". No wonder this album rules so much. He ripped off all his best songs! (er...except for the one where that he ripped off later...or something like that)

frankE (frankE), Friday, 15 October 2004 22:08 (nineteen years ago) link

Thanks for reviving this thread & reminding me to play this album again! I rarely get it out because I displayed my loyalty at the time by shelling out extra $ for the silly "Batcan" edition, in a round 5-inch tin that sits tucked away collecting dust, because it doesn't file with the other CDs.

Anyway, classic, if only for "Lemon Crush" -- a sublime example of the tossed-off insta-funk that your boy could seemingly do in his sleep back then. Lotsa other good ones, too.

briania (briania), Friday, 15 October 2004 22:16 (nineteen years ago) link

I got this album for my 10th birthday (2nd CD I ever owned). Sold it to a friend for $2 bucks in 8th grade. I really regret it now.

I certainly agreed with you at the time, but I've come to realize that the best movies don't have Robert Wuhl in them.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 15 October 2004 22:27 (nineteen years ago) link

This was one of the first records I truly, truly loved. My family went on holiday to Cyprus and I would sit inside the hotel room and stare out at the ocean and play it to death on my shitty Toshiba walkman. I would grudgingly interrupt listenings to go and play with the other kids at some lame hotel-organized play club thing, wondering which of those pale and geeky 13 year-old girls would be my own Vicki Vale...

Seriously, this is a dud. A major one too. "Partyman" may partly work, and possibly "Scandalous". But then, that's it.

Classic moment in Shaun of the Dead where the two roomies realize they can slow zombies by throwing vinyl into their brains -- they go through Purple Rain, Sign o' the Times and another couple of Prince records before they say, "BATMAN SOUNDTRACK?!?" and chuck the thing at his head. Brilliant stuff.

"The Future"'s sound rules, and so does Batdance itself. But most of the lyrics sound pretty tossed off.

"This town needs an enema"

When was the last top 5 hit with the word enema in it?
Such a rush

That Helltime post is the best Excelsior-worthy post I've seen in a month.

The amount of self-steals on Batman are large (the ending of 'Forever In My Life'='Vicki Waiting', the best song, mind), but that's almost an advantage. Recently, I could finally listen to the entire thing and I still believe it's classic. Awesomely, ridiculously classic.

i used to have this album on cassette! i'd clean my room to it. the first batman film was my favorite when i was between six and seven years old.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Saturday, 16 October 2004 13:07 (nineteen years ago) link

i don't remember it too well either, but when this came out, a friend and i spent a lot of time driving around listening to it at full volume. we loved "200 balloons" too. i liked the whole "mad scientist let loose in a recording studio" vibe of this. i guess that sounds contrived and cliché, but prince is one of the few artists who could pull it off. i remember really liking the rhythm programming and editing...

"The Future" slaps.

Patriotic Goiter (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 29 December 2020 22:21 (three years ago) link

Not only ambition, it lacks craft. It sounds like he bashes it out in a few days. But yeah its enjoyable. Batdance is fun :) I'd prob have preferred it if Tim burton used 1999 and baby I'm a star like he planned before prince jumped on board. Dont imagine burton or Nicholson thought they got prince on his best day when they heard the soundtrack.

candyman, Tuesday, 29 December 2020 22:28 (three years ago) link

But yeah, it's a quickie throwaway like the black album. Which is cool, but dont pretend like it isn't :p I mean, half of love sexy sounds throwaway too!

candyman, Tuesday, 29 December 2020 22:31 (three years ago) link

I've seen posted elsewhere, but it's been said that The Black Album (and its replacement, Lovesexy) marked a shift where Prince became less interested in crafting tight, polished songs. So you definitely hear that continue with Batman. Anyway, it's never going to be a major work but it's on par with the Magical Mystery Tour double EP - a highly enjoyable trifle that's more fun than the movie it was made for.

I simply like more songs on Batman: "The Future," "Electric Chair," "Scandalous," for starters. And "Batdance" remains a glorius wtf moment, at once part of and adjacent to his catalog.

Alfred - fair enough. I just think his songwriting and arranging struck some sort of weird, baroque vein on Lovesexy and it was dullsville, for the most part, from there.

There is a longer version of the "Vicki Vale Mix" on the Batdance maxi single: 6 minutes instead of the 4 minutes on the video you linked. Both that and the "Batmix" version of Batdance (they're both remixed by Mark Moore of S-Express and William Orbit), as well as the technoish remix of The Future on its maxi, are awesome! In general, the maxi versions of the Batman singles + The Scandalous Sex Suite EP are all worth checking out, IMO the B-sides and remixes on them are better some of the tracks on the actual album.
