lenny kravitz' first record seemed pretty "around the world in a day" influenced to me, maybe it's just a similar beatles + sly ideal behind em...I know it's uncool, but I loved "Let Love Rule" when it came out. Does the Cody Chestnutt record sound like this? I will buy it if it does.

Nobody answered Robin so I will: yes, "Manic Monday" was written by Prince for the Bangles (under the pseudonym "Christopher"). "Waterfalls" had no Prince involvement, but sounds like it :)

As far as ripoffs and homages go, this year alone, Basement Jaxx released 'Plug It In' as a single, that song's guest vocalist, JC Chasez, can count '100 Ways' and 'Shake It' (featuring 'The' Basement Jaxx) from his album, Schizophrenic, as well as part of his overall aesthetic, the Freestylers released 'Push Up', which is like a lesser xerox of Prince funk and 'Plug It In' and Superthriller released their debut album, Superthriller 1, which includes the singles 'Ahjustwannadance', 'I'm Gonna Leave At Three So Call Me' and 'Smoking Kills'.

Discussion and listing of others, please! I love the dude's influence.

Chelonis R Jones a bit? A bit more tenuously, Prince basically rules house at the moment - the influence isn't necessarily as obvious as it is with Basement Jaxx but a lot of the shinier upbeat electro-house stuff has that thick sparkly plastic feel to it. This really came through for me on the Mei Lwun mix.

The original (don't remember the FM edit). The Cagedbaby remix was Princey electro in a way. Thinking it over, there's something Princey about the Chemicals' 'Get Yourself High' (the weird bass sound and minimalism), and even Rex too ('Heartbeats', particularly) - that'll be the thick, sparkly, plastic feel. there's also Alexis Strum/Kylie - 'Still Standing'.

Also, I'm off to look for the Mei Lwun thread - I realised I have one of his tracks on the Deeper Concentration comp.

I get "Bucci Bag" confused because I'm not sure if my CD single is mislabelled - the "FM Edit" is the one everyone plays, it's got that punishing robo-bass riff right through it that sounds like it's sampled from The Normal's "Warm Leatherette" or something. The same riff runs through the longer, spacier , slightly less brutal and occasionally amost trancey "Doria Dub".

The "original" is more of an epic electro-house number with a live post-punk bassline, occasionally rockish breakdowns in the drums and skronky guitar. It could actually be a house remix of "House of Jealous Lovers".

Potentially the titles for the original version and the dub are mixed up on my single, although what's labelled as the "Doria Dub" certainly *sounds* like a dub mix.

Mislabel - "The original" sounds more like the Playgroup remix. The other Prince-aspect about 'Bucci Bag' is the snare clap at the end of every 4th bar.

Will do. That mix is pretty much the best thing Playgroup has ever done, outside of a couple of album tracks (and 'Number One' would love to be a proper part of this thread, I suspect, there's some link to Controversy in there, I think). The P-group and C-baby mixes are on the same 12", and was therefore probably my favourite 2003 mix package.

MJ's Bad LP skirts the edge here. Prince himself dubbed it "pathetic".

two years pass...

I picked up The Family's debut (only?) record this week for 1 quid in the Zavvi. This really is a great, sort of lightweight, carefree record. Reminds me a bit of Controversy. I wondered if anyone knew just how much this was a Prince record? He doesn't get much in the way of producing or writing credits, but it sounds like every little thing was done by him, even some of the vocals. Anyone know just how large his contribution was?
