Yeah, it's only really been a problem in Powers. If you're going to go to the trouble of doing double-page spreads, why not clearly extend the panels across the pages and take advantage of the space? It's my only complaint, though, since I love the writing and the art.

Martin, definitely move on to "Supergroup", it's fantastic.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 16:29 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, I intend to - and most everything else I can find by Bendis too.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 16:41 (nineteen years ago) link

I finished Who Killed Retro Girl? and I have to say, I'm not all that impressed. There were a few things that bothered me. I thought some of the dialogue was unbelievable. I remember Deena blowing up at Det. Walker's former partner, screaming, "Why don't you work on one of your own cases for once?!" I think she'd only been teamed up with Walker for, like, a day or two. It was that "for once" that didn't make sense. I feel kind of nasty picking out such a small thing as that, but 75% of this thread was talking about how much Bendis likes to write dialogue.

And, secondly, I think using the SAME image in FIVE panels, just zoomed-in or cropped a bit, is artistic cheating. I was really, really put off by this. It was happening all the time. And some of the time, I think Oeming just erased someone's mouth and drew in a new one, and called that the new panel. I mean, zooming-in to get a "close up" of someone's face? Then the lines are half an inch thick, instead of normal pencil line width. Do you know what I mean? Why can't he just draw each panel? I mean, maybe that's how it was written but I think it's lame.

... I'll check out Vols 3 and 4, though. Since Jordan said 4 was so good. But I don't have high expectations.

Vermont Girl (Vermont Girl), Monday, 30 August 2004 11:55 (nineteen years ago) link

I thought the same thing about the repeating panels, but in the back of vol. 4 Oeming says that he does redraw each image to get the tiny differences. I don't know about the zooming though, that does make him seem like a big fat cheater.

He also mentions that he never uses a ruler except for panel borders, which seems pretty cool to my non-drawin' ass.

I did read Supergroup, by the way - and it's my least favourite volume so far. The government conspiracy stuff just seemed purposeless. I guess I have an aversion to conspiracy theory stories generally.

Where's this up to at the moment? I think I read.. two trades after Supergroup? one of Walker returning to the fold (nice, kinda) and one which had Bendis doing "cosmic" which was really quite odd but probably my favorourite in the entire series - how long ago is this in the issues / in the trades?

tom west (thomp), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 11:43 (eighteen years ago) link

That's the end of the first series. So whatever number we're up to now in the second series (around 9, I think) is how many you've missed.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 12:34 (eighteen years ago) link

The next trade (Legends) comes out in a couple weeks. Does that start collecting the new series, then?

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 13:22 (eighteen years ago) link

Isn't Legends the MONKEY ASS SEX one?

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 14:03 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm confused now. Never mind me.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 14:08 (eighteen years ago) link

No, I was wrong. Forever is the MONKEY ASS SEX one.

Legends must, in that case, be the first Marvel one (which I think have been meh so far).

forever is one that probably reads alot better in trade than in the issues, where your patience was more likely to get tested. it spans eons, tells the story of how superheros came to be, throughout history blah blah blah, it's walker's origin story basically, also explains how he lost his powers although haha i think this is the first time i've ever noticed continuity error (if there is one) cuz i coulda sworn he said at some point he lost his power while flying in the middle of something or other and - i think - retro girl saved him. anyhow, i'd read other powers first, people reading the relaunch should really read the first trade cuz there's alot of, er, relevance. i enjoy it - cop shows + meta comics = up my alley.

Took advantage of getting sick to reread the whole damn thing. Lots of random thoughts.

Replying to this thread (What's so special about POWERS?) a bit as well, but it seemed to veer away so I'm posting here.

Vermont Girl, posting almost exactly a year ago, is insanely wrong wrt Retro Girl. It always makes me misty at the end. This is not easy to do. My heart's in my throat now just thinking about it. "Don't be sad, Walker..."

i coulda sworn he said at some point he lost his power while flying in the middle of something or other and - i think - retro girl saved him

He talks about a big boom while he was fighting zzaxx in the middle of the Johnny Royale warehouse blowout, and about Retro Girl having to save his suddenly-powerless ass. This could be explained away since it's Walker's first-person account and he's clearly not always that forthcoming about his past, and sometimes deliberately misleading. And he may have reason to not want to share his history with Teh Wolf, or what he remembers of it.

Speaking of which, if anyone has any idea what, specifically, the "full story" is that it turns out Walker didn't tell at the end of Supergroup... well, if it's as simple as he/zora/rg were a thing I've got it, but it still seems rather cryptic.

Come to think, Zora's last line in Supergroup also makes me misty every time I read it. "You know I'd do anything for you..."

forever is one that probably reads alot better in trade than in the issues, where your patience was more likely to get tested

There was a real pleasure in picking up that monkey issue though, and being all WTF?!?! and having to wait six weeks for the... Conan issue? And being all "I think I see where this is going but WTF?!" etc. It really took advantage of the episodic format and made the wait exquisite - ooh ooh when/where will the next one be set?

...

At the time, Anarchy seemed like a pretty weak arc. Turns out to be a very nice plant that pays off in Sellouts. See, the thing is, what Supershock's going to prove... Harvey's right.

...

I wouldn't want a Powers illustrated by anyone other than Oeming. The style he uses may be "cartoony," but the underpinning layouts deliver really strong storytelling. Cinematic in the Miller mold. Plus the "cartoony" style is what lets them get away with teh monkeysex and the watersports and the exploding bodies and etc. etc. I wouldn't want that to feel anymore real. Though now that I think about it it would be a hoot to get my hands on the Bizarro-world Powers as brought to you by Bendis and Liefeld.

rogermexico (rogermexico), Thursday, 1 September 2005 00:09 (eighteen years ago) link

I've bought and loved every Powers TPB except for Forever... but I just don't know if I have the patience for the monkeys, or the divergence from the modern day Powers universe. Is this "story that literally spans the history of man" really worth my time and $19.95?

Laura H. (laurah), Thursday, 1 September 2005 22:13 (eighteen years ago) link

I've just finished vol 1., and have come away a little underwhelmed. Like the art, it's all pretty well done, but I'm just a little bored of meta-fictional superhero books now. I'll probably buy vol 2. at some point, and give up if that doesn't grab me a bit more.

chap who would dare to thwart the revolution (chap), Monday, 5 September 2005 12:54 (eighteen years ago) link

I thought at the end of the last issue that if he had a better artist, they would have been able to show us "Deena is seriously troubled by her dark secret" rather than have the dialogue do all the heavy lifting. But they'd probably do that anyway.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 5 September 2005 14:18 (eighteen years ago) link

did oeming start well then get real lazy? or did i just get bored with him?

i am finding lotsa stuff after the "cosmic" bits kinda meh: when deena wakes up and powers are illegal and this is A Big Deal, why is the current storyline so seen-it-before? i think maybe i am disappointed bcz i thought powers-are-illegal was going to lead to police state moral hand-wringing storylines and instead it seems to mostly be connected to the deena-kills-somebody story.

tom west (thomp), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 23:22 (eighteen years ago) link

Peeps, let's not forget that this ain't the first somebody Deena's killed.

(Though yes, 12 issues in it still feels like the same very slow arc, dragging on. Deena's sitch should be b-story, but we care too much about her and too little about the cases and the stupid power gem for that to work.)

rogermexico (rogermexico), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 01:28 (eighteen years ago) link

i thought they just gave up on the did-she-kill-johnny-wossname bit.

oh lord do you think the big arc is Deena Is Actually A Serial Killer?

tom west (thomp), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 01:56 (eighteen years ago) link

No "did she?" about it - Deena iced Johnny Royale. I dunno about "gave up" though-- it paid off in the scene where Walker called her on it, and while I suppose it could always come back to haunt her I assume it's finished for now.

More fucking "standup comedy". What a shitty conceit. Not only is he too stuck on his Sorkin gag to realize that there are about a thousand better ways to make his point, but the things these people are saying have basically no relation to the story at all!

tom west (thomp), Monday, 12 December 2005 16:40 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah, but they're so bad they sort of cast a pall over the rest of the comic. Which is typical Bendis. I can't think of another writer that can be so simultaneously good/bad within the stretch of a few pages.

WilliamC, Thursday, 12 March 2015 11:57 (nine years ago) link

Feel the same here. Very expositiony. Understand some of the changes; others just seem weird. Like, I get why they did what they did with Callista and Zora, but it's going to cost something later. Biggest challenge tho is I'm just not buying Copley's Walker yet.

Credit where credit is due tho: out of nowhere Eddie Izzard is electric.

resulting post (rogermexico.), Thursday, 12 March 2015 14:09 (nine years ago) link

Watched the first three. It gets much better after the first ep, which simultaneously tries to cram in too much yet doesn't move the plot on nearly enough. The next two are much better paced and advance the plot by just the right amount each time. The pilot feels like a massive misstep, I can't understand why someone who wasn't already familiar with Powers would stick with it.

Copley facially is like Walker but his body type is just wrong. The dialogue is very, very Bendis though.

based on what we've seen so far it looks like they've already written the caveman stuff out :/

resulting post (rogermexico.), Wednesday, 1 April 2015 05:33 (nine years ago) link

I thought the first episode was pretty good. By the end of the episode I was ok with this guy as Walker, even though he isn't as big and imposing as he looks in the comics. I thought the cast wasn't too bad. I like that character actor that is playing Johnny Royale and Izzard pretty much steals the scene he is in. Michelle Forbes has pretty much made a career playing in scifi and crime shows, but she is really good and was great in Battlestar Galactica.

earlnash, Friday, 3 April 2015 00:46 (nine years ago) link

izzard's the bright spot for sure and yeah noah taylor is fine even if his johnny royale is a mess. i understand the failures of courage in development that led us here but imma just say here we are 6 eps in and do you gaf about the "case"? is there even a case at all? plus the terrible terrible buildup of kaotic chic. it's like they are actively trying to excise anything that might lead them at all in the direction of procedural.

which is unfortunate bc giving the characters something to do is the way that we get to know them. initially the book used deena as our lens and gave us the twin mysteries of what happened to retro girl and what walker's deal was. now? deena is boring and angsty and probably won't kill <spoiler> and zora is just some random and we have no mysteries at all and argh.
