but it was 2x as long and 2x as boring. book 4 was sorta interesting, had better worldbuilding, new interests, etc.

too much Cersei for me in book 4. One note character shrilling her one note to oblivion.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 14 October 2011 19:33 (twelve years ago) link

i really liked the tyrion plot in 5, and the john snow plot, but both could have been half as long

4 & 5 condensed into one would be excellent.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 14 October 2011 19:36 (twelve years ago) link

yeah, and should have been what happened

max, Friday, 14 October 2011 19:37 (twelve years ago) link

matt ill be interested to see what you think! i had an initially meh-bordering-on-positive reaction but once the adrenaline of reading the thing had worn off i grew to hate it, deeply

max, Friday, 14 October 2011 19:37 (twelve years ago) link

i'm just digging what's going on w/snow, danerys, tyrion right now, intersting plotlines so far imo

the 500 gats of bartholomew thuggins (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 14 October 2011 19:41 (twelve years ago) link

there's a lot of water-treading w/ dany and snow, imho, that seemed pretty clearly padding out length

has anybody seen my jeffrey tambourine? (remy bean), Friday, 14 October 2011 19:43 (twelve years ago) link

i guess i have a hard time believing i'll like it less than book 4 for the simple fact of the characters that are in this one....but who knows, i'm still in the honeymoon phase

i mean tbf page 120 in an asoiaf book is like page 25 in most books

max, Friday, 14 October 2011 19:44 (twelve years ago) link

no i realize! i'm just saying i'm totally loving it, but obv i've been waiting forever for this so i'm pretty pumped up about it

I was watching Batman Begins last weekend and Joffrey is one of the little kids Batman saves. I really wanted him to fling Joffrey from the burning building.

loooool

Yes, I have had this problem with several of the knights and courtiers on other shows, too.

so I guess I should probably commit to this this, then? Swords & sorcery renaissance fair fare is typically not my bag, but I just watched the opening sequence of the first episode & am appropriately creeped out in good way by the blue-eyed demon people, so yes! yes?

Yes!

lol just realized you weren't referring to the Lannisters with "blue-eyed demon people."

foxes freud (Leee), Saturday, 22 October 2011 18:38 (twelve years ago) link

The swords and sorcery stuff is really kept to a minimum (thankfully, imo, because I'm also not into it) in favor of some totally dirty politicking, which is where the show's hottness is (for me).

foxes freud (Leee), Saturday, 22 October 2011 18:42 (twelve years ago) link

Also, for benefit of people who haven't read the books, I'd like to fill out this thread to push the book 4 talk into the "Skipping..." fold again, so, uh, trying to think of possible topics for discussion...

foxes freud (Leee), Saturday, 22 October 2011 18:46 (twelve years ago) link

barely into it, but digging it so far. As of right now, my favorite aspect is the gorgeous photography & the choice of the Ulster countryside & coastline as a backdrop/setting. It's making me a bit nostalgic, as I traveled in that area quite extensively years ago - of course, at the time, there was an unfortunate lack of towering, mystical fortresses & men in fur capes w/ broadswords roaming the countryside.

Yeah, they had to film it in marching season to get the epic armies in the background. Then CGI out all the bowler hats.

T/S: Jon Snow (book 1) vs. Jon Snow (season 1)?

daschund derrida (Leee), Sunday, 6 November 2011 19:26 (twelve years ago) link

a friend of mine works on the show (series 1 and 2) so here are a couple of gossipy bits:

two of the "brothers" had a right old time off-set spitroasting various make-up and wardrobe girls.

one of the main (scottish) actors' breath is so bad the other actors dread filming a scene with him.

jed_, Tuesday, 8 November 2011 00:39 (twelve years ago) link

what is it with celebrities in Britain and spitroasting?

encarta it (Gukbe), Tuesday, 8 November 2011 00:48 (twelve years ago) link

maybe bad breath dude is just going method?

Number None, Tuesday, 8 November 2011 01:04 (twelve years ago) link

Maybe he was spit-roasted and didn't get a chance to rinse.

Reading the first book, enjoying it so much. It's just so readable, and for all the quibbles about his style upthread, I don't think he writes badly at all. Lots of it is very evocative, and his dialogue is often excellent.

Inevitable stupid samba mix (chap), Saturday, 19 November 2011 20:30 (twelve years ago) link

His stylistic tics get worse as the series goes on, imo.

one month passes...

i realized our household has HBO on demand about a week ago, and watched all of Season 1 since then. i've never read the books (and don't really plan to) so i can't speak to how closely the series adheres to the text, but this show is awesome, obv. watching it is so enjoyable that the relatively minor flaws really stand out. i didn't really feel like going back and reading through 2000 posts, so i'm sure a lot of this has already been discussed:

- boobs! vagina! buttz! penis! thwapping! every episode! i feel like rick santorum or something, but the nudity is a little gratuitous. do the books place such a strong emphasis on sex? i understand there are plot elements that demand sex, but there were several scenes where it was just totally unnecessary and distracting. like the one where the advisor at King's Landing who is extremely cunning and witty and is not a eunuch is delivering a long monologue on the nature of power or something, and meanwhile in the background there are two women working on having sex with a man, trading positions, getting off, moaning, and occasionally he interrupts his monologue to throw them a sex tip or two. what

- Daenerys is really hot, and she really can't act at all. oh well. boobs!

- other actors who can't act but are somewhat exempted from ridicule because they're children: Arya (stop making that goddamn face where your mouth is half open in disbelief and pain! FUCKING STOP IT!) and Sansa (the one who has a boner for Joffrey during the first half of the season.

- a child that can act: Joffrey. he was convincing as a total asshole long before his character took the throne.

- Tyrion is awesome. he stands outs in every single scene he's in.

your pain is probably equal (Z S), Monday, 2 January 2012 01:47 (twelve years ago) link

many friends have posted the vid of Tyrion slapping Joffrey as their favorite TV moment of 2011

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Monday, 2 January 2012 02:08 (twelve years ago) link

there's a fair amount of of sex in the books. the ridiculous scene with Littlefinger that you mentioned is completely fabricated for the show though, presumably to meet HBO's boob quota

ciderpress, Monday, 2 January 2012 03:52 (twelve years ago) link

I've just finished book two. It's probably the most violent thing I've ever read, of course I am completely hooked.

two weeks pass...

i've just started book 2. i'm not annoyed by the stylistic tics he mentions (yet?). i actually love daenerys and am disappointed to hear she wasn't well cast in the series. :(
