the problem is really more that most of them don't have a character to sell.

This is true, for the most part. I feel like the main dude COULD be a compelling character though. But, yeah, the rest of them are barely sketches of character tropes at this point, hardly the fault of the actors that none of them are engaging I guess. But wife-stealing redneck guy is a pretty terrible actor it seems.

ok let me amend that, the only thing worse than the dialogue is what might have been the worst opening monlogue for a season premier ever.

i still enjoy the show, but yeah all of these people say the dumbest most unbelieveable shit like ALL THE TIME.

xxp otm - kinda hard for characters to develop if they keep saying dumb ass rote expository bullshit all the time.

sorta starting to look like the best actor in this might be racist dude actually

American Horror Sorry (jjjusten), Wednesday, 19 October 2011 20:39 (twelve years ago) link

Haha, yeah, I almost mentioned that earlier.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Wednesday, 19 October 2011 20:42 (twelve years ago) link

i'm agreeing with jjjusten here. I honestly don't think i can keep watching this now unfortunately. hoping american horror story scratches the itch instead.

i've determined that what i really want out of this show is just like nonstop zombie mobs wandering around.
tell the story from the zombie perspective. i don't give two shits about any of these characters. until they're zombies.

loads of personality, loved to chase chickens (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 19 October 2011 20:45 (twelve years ago) link

justen so otm. I was already skeptical about the show developing past "whoa zombies" but gave them the benefit of the doubt that a year to work on who these people are would get the show rolling into a decent ensemble show with a horror background. Then that opening monologue came. Ugh.

Clay, Wednesday, 19 October 2011 20:46 (twelve years ago) link

i'm pretty sure they would make even the zombie dialogue annoying and unbelievable.

See I think this show plays up to my expectations wrt to zombies, tension, and gore enough that I can overlook the shitty characters and dialogue. Keep giving me scenes of zombie autopsy, gruesome deaths, suspenseful moments like the kids under the car, and genuinely WTF moments like the last 2 minutes of this episode and its more than enough to keep me watching. I don't expect like Emmy winning performances from this show.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Wednesday, 19 October 2011 20:48 (twelve years ago) link

kinda hoping the new showrunner (dude from The Shield who wasn't Shawn Ryan) & writing staff will spruce things up, & I am willing to stick around to find out. Darabont allegedly wrote & had quite a hand in the first several eps, so it will take a minute to shake out.

HOOTERS FOOD AND BEVERAGE (Pillbox), Wednesday, 19 October 2011 20:49 (twelve years ago) link

also can someone explain to me why any parent would let their kid come along on a wild zombie hunt beyond "because the kid said 'but mommm!'"? that was the most horrible plot contrivance I've come across in awhile.

Clay, Wednesday, 19 October 2011 20:51 (twelve years ago) link

why did they HAVE to rerecord that monologue and play it without any background surface noise at all? Not only was it terribly written but the sound was crazy amateurish.

loads of personality, loved to chase chickens (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 19 October 2011 20:57 (twelve years ago) link

According to AICN the freeway scene and i guess scenes before it were from Darabont's first ep that was then cut into the redone second ep which is why it was 90 minutes. I don't know if there is any truth to that.

encarta it (Gukbe), Wednesday, 19 October 2011 21:03 (twelve years ago) link

hm. that may make me want to watch the rest of the ep. Did it get notably better?

loads of personality, loved to chase chickens (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 19 October 2011 21:03 (twelve years ago) link

yeah the kid going on the zombie hunt and then worse being left behind with a small group was the dumbest damn thing i have seen in the horror genre in a long time, and that is saying something

American Horror Sorry (jjjusten), Wednesday, 19 October 2011 21:04 (twelve years ago) link

Darabont allegedly wrote & had quite a hand in the first several eps - wrong about that btw

people are stupid. i don't hold tv shows to account for reflecting societies stupidity in their writing.

The characters on this show should just walk around holding signs with their motivation and emotional state on them.

Jheri Curlnelius (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Thursday, 20 October 2011 03:41 (twelve years ago) link

I was so bummed that after that long delay, this was the best they could come up with. Sure, the setpiece was great - except for the complete lack of logic of this 150 zombie horde suddenly appearing *behind* them on the highway, while they've been keeping watch, no less. Solemn dialog is just shit on this show, not not at all like the badassary of the comic. Was worried there would by a LOL dumb woman assembled the gun wrong joke, but thank goodness they didn't go that route.

The rest of the show was iirc just them running back and forth in the woods. Which was very boring.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 20 October 2011 13:03 (twelve years ago) link

Also, missed opportunity to have a zombie lurch out of the bushes and eat the magic buck. (Plus, why did that dude raise his gun to shoot the buck before head sheriff stopped him? Was he planning the carry that huge animal through the zombie woods back to camp?).

Anyway, dumb show, not getting better. And the pre-ep flashback to the CDC episode reminded me of how bad it can still get

missed opportunity to have the buck turn around and its face is a zombie!

the first 20 mins were good, everything after that bad. at least the gore effects are great. things that made me laugh:

-rick monologue in beginning where he goes 'he told me... he told me... Ah it doesnt matter.'
-kid gettin shot, too bad the preview shows him being taken somewhere to presumably recover

Yeah, especially given how good with guns Andrea is in the comic.

have forgotten every character but egg and only thing I remember about him is that he's egg

his wife was in prison break surprised to remember I managed to resist watching beyond the first season of that

conrad, Thursday, 20 October 2011 20:41 (twelve years ago) link

don't even remember season one being this shit, the script is horrendous. that opening monologue was just truly awful. the zombies still look great and it surprises me with how disgusting it is, will keep watching but it's dumb as hell.

I was getting pissed off with the whole "fuel situation" stopping them from choosing alternate routes, shouting "there are literally thousands of fucking cars everywhere, siphon some fuel!" then of them said "hey why don't we siphon some fuel?" so I let them off.

Zombie gut check was good. As was the wtf unexpected shooting - I expected something unexpected but not that.

All of the woman are better actors than all of the men.

This premiere was a near deal breaker for me, because they had so much time to do it right (especially after that season finale, which was so wrong). And instead they not only went the dull route, they kept bringing all this pandering religion stuff into it. And it's terribly written to boot. All 70+ issues of the comics keep your attention from start to finish, and manage to squeeze in plenty of drama and excitement and characterization in each short installment. How come a show with a staff and a head start can't get it right for an hour once a week?

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 22 October 2011 18:47 (twelve years ago) link

especialloy given this ep was written by the writer of the comics which, sure, not everyone's a fan of, but they manage better than this

really badly written, mostly badly acted, still watching it though because the zombies look cool

that cheating wife woman really needs to find some haircare products and a pair of scissors in an abandoned salon, cuz her droopy, thin, long locks are bugging the fuck out of me

akm, Sunday, 23 October 2011 15:04 (twelve years ago) link

she wasn't cheating, or at least she didn't know she was

building a binary of hope (onimo), Monday, 24 October 2011 10:15 (twelve years ago) link

Was there a new episode? Was it any good, or at least better?

Whether or not she was technically "cheating," she did manage to hook up with her husband's partner within days of the zombiepocalypse. Though I want to say one of the early eps implied some marital strife at the time? Damned if I'm going to go back and watch season one ever again.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 24 October 2011 14:02 (twelve years ago) link

every character on this show is intolerably emo. I don't see why the writers need to resort to that sort of thing to create conflict when there's a built in plot mechanism for conflict and motivation that's the entire premise of the show.

plus they all seem relatively fragile. maybe im wrong, but i think the survivors of a situation like this would pretty much be hard ass pragmatists at all times, and wouldn't really tolerate emotional instability.

ryan, Monday, 24 October 2011 14:25 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, the comic is also mostly about the survival of the badass. Because zombie hordes don't tolerate dead weight (so to speak).

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 24 October 2011 14:35 (twelve years ago) link

sounds like the comic.

hardcore oatmeal (Jordan), Monday, 24 October 2011 14:50 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, but the comic has a sniper pro chick and another going all berserker with a ninja sword. This TV version of that world is more southern rednecks rule. Everyone knows how to hunt, shoot and fix a car.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 24 October 2011 14:58 (twelve years ago) link

I can do none of that stuff, I'd be useless in a zombocalypse - though I have played a lot of Dead Rising and Resident Evil.

just managed to watch the end of the first ep

what the fuck was that such a weird and shit and inexplicable end to a SEASON PR'MEEEER - egg and his pal watching the kid approach the stag or whatever for what seemed like quarter of an hour both looking at him smiling expectantly but expectant of what what was the kid gonna do and then when he got shot egg and his pal didn't even really look around to see who had fired the shot weird and crap gonna watch the second ep

conrad, Tuesday, 25 October 2011 21:06 (twelve years ago) link

So I take it that means this ep sucked, too? I don't really want to bother with this show anymore, other than the fact that it's so much fun to make fun of.

Or there at least zombies in this episode, or is it another wander around the woods special?

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 26 October 2011 01:56 (twelve years ago) link

tbh, all the emotional characterization stuff reminds me of Lost
