have forgotten every character but egg and only thing I remember about him is that he's egg

his wife was in prison break surprised to remember I managed to resist watching beyond the first season of that

conrad, Thursday, 20 October 2011 20:41 (twelve years ago) link

don't even remember season one being this shit, the script is horrendous. that opening monologue was just truly awful. the zombies still look great and it surprises me with how disgusting it is, will keep watching but it's dumb as hell.

I was getting pissed off with the whole "fuel situation" stopping them from choosing alternate routes, shouting "there are literally thousands of fucking cars everywhere, siphon some fuel!" then of them said "hey why don't we siphon some fuel?" so I let them off.

Zombie gut check was good. As was the wtf unexpected shooting - I expected something unexpected but not that.

All of the woman are better actors than all of the men.

This premiere was a near deal breaker for me, because they had so much time to do it right (especially after that season finale, which was so wrong). And instead they not only went the dull route, they kept bringing all this pandering religion stuff into it. And it's terribly written to boot. All 70+ issues of the comics keep your attention from start to finish, and manage to squeeze in plenty of drama and excitement and characterization in each short installment. How come a show with a staff and a head start can't get it right for an hour once a week?

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 22 October 2011 18:47 (twelve years ago) link

especialloy given this ep was written by the writer of the comics which, sure, not everyone's a fan of, but they manage better than this

really badly written, mostly badly acted, still watching it though because the zombies look cool

that cheating wife woman really needs to find some haircare products and a pair of scissors in an abandoned salon, cuz her droopy, thin, long locks are bugging the fuck out of me

akm, Sunday, 23 October 2011 15:04 (twelve years ago) link

she wasn't cheating, or at least she didn't know she was

building a binary of hope (onimo), Monday, 24 October 2011 10:15 (twelve years ago) link

Was there a new episode? Was it any good, or at least better?

Whether or not she was technically "cheating," she did manage to hook up with her husband's partner within days of the zombiepocalypse. Though I want to say one of the early eps implied some marital strife at the time? Damned if I'm going to go back and watch season one ever again.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 24 October 2011 14:02 (twelve years ago) link

every character on this show is intolerably emo. I don't see why the writers need to resort to that sort of thing to create conflict when there's a built in plot mechanism for conflict and motivation that's the entire premise of the show.

plus they all seem relatively fragile. maybe im wrong, but i think the survivors of a situation like this would pretty much be hard ass pragmatists at all times, and wouldn't really tolerate emotional instability.

ryan, Monday, 24 October 2011 14:25 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, the comic is also mostly about the survival of the badass. Because zombie hordes don't tolerate dead weight (so to speak).

sounds like the comic.

hardcore oatmeal (Jordan), Monday, 24 October 2011 14:50 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, but the comic has a sniper pro chick and another going all berserker with a ninja sword. This TV version of that world is more southern rednecks rule. Everyone knows how to hunt, shoot and fix a car.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 24 October 2011 14:58 (twelve years ago) link

I can do none of that stuff, I'd be useless in a zombocalypse - though I have played a lot of Dead Rising and Resident Evil.

just managed to watch the end of the first ep

what the fuck was that such a weird and shit and inexplicable end to a SEASON PR'MEEEER - egg and his pal watching the kid approach the stag or whatever for what seemed like quarter of an hour both looking at him smiling expectantly but expectant of what what was the kid gonna do and then when he got shot egg and his pal didn't even really look around to see who had fired the shot weird and crap gonna watch the second ep

So I take it that means this ep sucked, too? I don't really want to bother with this show anymore, other than the fact that it's so much fun to make fun of.

Or there at least zombies in this episode, or is it another wander around the woods special?

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 26 October 2011 01:56 (twelve years ago) link

tbh, all the emotional characterization stuff reminds me of Lost

The comic book has lost its way too. The 'we're safe let's build a society! just kidding not really!' thing is getting boring.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Wednesday, 26 October 2011 17:00 (twelve years ago) link

Mutually self-assured creative destruction: creator takes on TV show while still doing the comic, both fall apart. Or fail upwards, as the case may be. Though surely there are people out there who actually like the writing and characters and are put-off by all the zombies.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 26 October 2011 17:34 (twelve years ago) link

still enjoying this despite myself, still better than the comic, can't really defend the show on its own terms though, its just junk (w/great makeup effects)

you couldnt wring a full season of tv out of fighting zombies. too expensive, and the last 30 years of terrible zombie movies have already put paid to how boring that is. they have the right idea concentrating on the characters, its just that these characters are overwrought dipshits

The sham nation of Israel should be destroyed. (Princess TamTam), Thursday, 27 October 2011 07:04 (twelve years ago) link

I skimmed around at a couple of other forums, and the degree of fan disdain for this show is so high. Apparently this last ep actually had the mom interrogate a purported doctor at length to make sure he was OK to operate on Carl? When, of course, there is literally no fucking other alternative, anywhere?

Predominant fan conspiracy theory is that they must skimp on sets, actors, writing in order to afford zombie F/X.

Also, apparently in one character's bag of drugs (?), there was "Breaking Bad" blue meth! Crossover!

you're definitely right. i think there's a middle ground though--in that you can concentrate on what these particular situations would reveal about the characters. who's a coward, who's a sadist, etc. The show is in some ways about people "clinging to their humanity" when it would be more interesting to see what would change about them, what humanity they would lose, in order to survive, the things they would do that we'd balk at in our zombie-less existence.

Having not seen this POS second ep, do they explain how dude hunting deer managed to shoot the boy right next to the deer, and also miss the two grown ass men a few feet away? Is he some sort of one-eyed deaf magic sniper?

Also, I hear they drag out the "will he live?" drama for at least another ep, when we all know they're not going to kill the kid. True?

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 27 October 2011 15:07 (twelve years ago) link

killing off the kid would be a great idea! im hoping they basically find another group of survivors and we can just start following them around.

ryan, Thursday, 27 October 2011 15:09 (twelve years ago) link

Someone somewhere else pointed out the narrative boneheadedness of introducing viewers to another group of survivors a million times more interesting than the ones we've been following.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 27 October 2011 15:11 (twelve years ago) link

do they explain how dude hunting deer managed to shoot the boy right next to the deer,

He shot through the deer into the kid. Dr. Veterinarian notes that the deer slowed the bullet enough to make the wound non-fatal.

So he was so focused on the deer he didn't see the boy? Right next to the fucking deer?

deer was inbetween the two- the shot probably came from far away

Maybe he thought the zombie deer was eating the kid? Or the smiling, enraptured kid was a zombie, trying to eat the deer?

brownie, Thursday, 27 October 2011 16:16 (twelve years ago) link

i think the laziest writing trope this show seems to keep using is the delay of information to raise tension that isnt there, ie the "you cant go to the high school. you cant. thats your boy in there." for 5 minutes instead of saying "i will go" or the 5 minute vetting (hah) of the doctor when WE ALL KNOW WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN. its really starting to drive me crazy, because they do it all the fucking time.

ride the dronosaur (jjjusten), Thursday, 27 October 2011 16:19 (twelve years ago) link

like i am really trying to like this show, but yknow theres still better special effects in mid-level horror movies, and they at least have a shot at being well written or compelling.

also these might be the worst written female characters on a show ever, its like the writing staff just brainstorms ways to make them vulnerable irrational and overcome by emotion every week

ride the dronosaur (jjjusten), Thursday, 27 October 2011 16:21 (twelve years ago) link

Well, they are women.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 27 October 2011 16:50 (twelve years ago) link

In real life, most of these men would be blubbering wrecks, too. I mean, flesh-eating back from the dead zombies!
