I skimmed around at a couple of other forums, and the degree of fan disdain for this show is so high. Apparently this last ep actually had the mom interrogate a purported doctor at length to make sure he was OK to operate on Carl? When, of course, there is literally no fucking other alternative, anywhere?

Predominant fan conspiracy theory is that they must skimp on sets, actors, writing in order to afford zombie F/X.

Also, apparently in one character's bag of drugs (?), there was "Breaking Bad" blue meth! Crossover!

you couldnt wring a full season of tv out of fighting zombies. too expensive, and the last 30 years of terrible zombie movies have already put paid to how boring that is. they have the right idea concentrating on the characters, its just that these characters are overwrought dipshits

you're definitely right. i think there's a middle ground though--in that you can concentrate on what these particular situations would reveal about the characters. who's a coward, who's a sadist, etc. The show is in some ways about people "clinging to their humanity" when it would be more interesting to see what would change about them, what humanity they would lose, in order to survive, the things they would do that we'd balk at in our zombie-less existence.

This is the thing that killed me! Watching it, I was thinking 'Lady, what other choice do you have?' Morans.

Having not seen this POS second ep, do they explain how dude hunting deer managed to shoot the boy right next to the deer, and also miss the two grown ass men a few feet away? Is he some sort of one-eyed deaf magic sniper?

Also, I hear they drag out the "will he live?" drama for at least another ep, when we all know they're not going to kill the kid. True?

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 27 October 2011 15:07 (twelve years ago) link

killing off the kid would be a great idea! im hoping they basically find another group of survivors and we can just start following them around.

ryan, Thursday, 27 October 2011 15:09 (twelve years ago) link

Someone somewhere else pointed out the narrative boneheadedness of introducing viewers to another group of survivors a million times more interesting than the ones we've been following.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 27 October 2011 15:11 (twelve years ago) link

do they explain how dude hunting deer managed to shoot the boy right next to the deer,

He shot through the deer into the kid. Dr. Veterinarian notes that the deer slowed the bullet enough to make the wound non-fatal.

Food! Trends! Men! Hate! (Phil D.), Thursday, 27 October 2011 15:13 (twelve years ago) link

So he was so focused on the deer he didn't see the boy? Right next to the fucking deer?

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 27 October 2011 15:31 (twelve years ago) link

deer was inbetween the two- the shot probably came from far away

i'm not ruling out a second gunman

brownie, Thursday, 27 October 2011 15:37 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, it was:

Dudes ------- Boy -------- Deer ----------------------------- Shooter

the guy didn't think it was weird the deer had six legs and two of them were the legs of a child

conrad, Thursday, 27 October 2011 15:57 (twelve years ago) link

Maybe he thought the zombie deer was eating the kid? Or the smiling, enraptured kid was a zombie, trying to eat the deer?

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 27 October 2011 16:10 (twelve years ago) link

It's zombie times, man, anything's possible.

Food! Trends! Men! Hate! (Phil D.), Thursday, 27 October 2011 16:11 (twelve years ago) link

maybe he didn't see the kid

i think the laziest writing trope this show seems to keep using is the delay of information to raise tension that isnt there, ie the "you cant go to the high school. you cant. thats your boy in there." for 5 minutes instead of saying "i will go" or the 5 minute vetting (hah) of the doctor when WE ALL KNOW WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN. its really starting to drive me crazy, because they do it all the fucking time.

ride the dronosaur (jjjusten), Thursday, 27 October 2011 16:19 (twelve years ago) link

like i am really trying to like this show, but yknow theres still better special effects in mid-level horror movies, and they at least have a shot at being well written or compelling.

also these might be the worst written female characters on a show ever, its like the writing staff just brainstorms ways to make them vulnerable irrational and overcome by emotion every week

ride the dronosaur (jjjusten), Thursday, 27 October 2011 16:21 (twelve years ago) link

Well, they are women.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 27 October 2011 16:50 (twelve years ago) link

In real life, most of these men would be blubbering wrecks, too. I mean, flesh-eating back from the dead zombies!

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 27 October 2011 16:51 (twelve years ago) link

this show really needs a Rose from lost character, which is a deeply unsettling thing that i thought i would never say.

ride the dronosaur (jjjusten), Thursday, 27 October 2011 17:09 (twelve years ago) link

They could squeeze 2 or 1.5 episodes into 1 episode. That would cut off all the unnecessary dialogue

I watched a couple amc zombie films recently. The second one followed around characters that were very briefly in the the first one (Diary of the Dead and Survival of the Dead). Neither of the them were that good but Diary was much better. They were both written by George Romero (The Night of the Living Dead and Dawn of the Dead)

i love this show its great

Fine, how about this, then: what are the odds of hunting in the zombie-infested woods in the largely people-free post-apoclaypse, finding a deer, and then shooting at the exact moment a nearby forest-child was communing with the animal?

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 27 October 2011 21:01 (twelve years ago) link

2-1

brownie, Thursday, 27 October 2011 21:05 (twelve years ago) link

i stand by this:

i kind of wish that each season was six episodes, and at the end of each season all the characters would have been killed off, and then the next season was a whole new set of characters in some other location dealing with the zombies in their own way. but they still all end up dying eventually.

That would be awesome. Because then they can deal strictly with survival, or mostly, won't have to juggle too many lame narratives, and could change casts and locations at will. And have crossover eps!

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 27 October 2011 21:22 (twelve years ago) link

it would be more interesting to see what would change about them, what humanity they would lose, in order to survive, the things they would do that we'd balk at in our zombie-less existence.

See the end of the last episode. (Season 2 Episode 3)

I've totally cut and run on this show after the dire premiere, but the request still stands: please let me know if this series gets better, because I want to like it!

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 15:27 (twelve years ago) link

Almost did the same after that speech to open the the first episode of the season. They weren't supposed to use the blooper take where he pretends to be a giant wedge of cheese.

yes i liked the end of the last ep. BUT it was pretty terrible before that.

That zombie hanging from the tree was pretty cool. Norman Reedus continues to be the only decent character on this show.

the "im sorry" part was good. it was probably the first time this season i've been rewarded for watching this show.

this ep was horseshit except for the ending and the hanging zombie but oh man the kid in peril bullshit was 10000 flavors of WHO GIVES A FUCK WE KNOW THE KID WONT DIE

Got into a heated argument with a mom (at school pick up!) the other day about how much this show sucks. She honestly pulled the "I'm not interested in the zombies, I'm interested in the human interactions under stress." And I was all, yeah, we've seen that story a hundreds times, and better than this. Bring on the fucking zombies or find me some interesting human interactions, not these chumps.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 19:38 (twelve years ago) link

-serriously could not listen to the endless conversations all the way through

-hanging zombie was interesting so of course nothing was done with it

-hopefully the next episode will have them looking for sophia

-i'm still watching tbh

brownie, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 19:41 (twelve years ago) link

dont want this to come across as snotty horror dork, but i do wonder how many of the hardcore fans of this show just plain dont watch any modern horror and thus find this compelling/over the top.
