I think it is ridiculous that so many people talk about them being well dressed. And you think the shit they were is expensive? I don't know, I haven't seen them in a while, but just because someone is wearing a jacket, doesn't mean that they are well dressed or that they spent a lot of money. You can find a black jacket for $.99 at a thrift store. I think they look like they are playing dress up in a poor grandfather's closet.

I didn't even know that they were hated, although the backlash was obviously inevitable.
Therefore, I have no idea why they are so bad and hated, although I can take a stab at it, 1) they sound so much like Joy Division (good or bad depending on the person judging), 2) they were critically lauded (good or bad depending on the person judging), 3) Pitchfork loves them (good or bad depending on the person judging).

There, I've just named three reasons why they are bad and hated AND three reasons why they are good and loved.

i mean, if there were a gun to my head i would pick interpol over the darkness. and heck, the darkness might be the more original band. they don't sound enough like one band that i immediately think of better music that i've heard before. Interpol are more blatant. they have a song that sounds like the smiths and their chameleons one and their kitchens of distiction one, etc.

self-important liberal arts majors listen more obscure music than Interpol....Interpol is a good derivative pop band with handful of pretty great songs...also, to your original post, who cares if they listened (or still listen to) Blink 182? Isn't that natural for alot of indie type kids to start that way and move towards more obscure stuff?

As the lead singer for Interpol, Paul Banks surely packs a punch with his unique vocals and mysterious lyrics. He is the youngest member of the band and has had the privileged of having lived in various parts of the world. He was born in England, lived in Spain for a few years, attended high school in Mexico and studied abroad in France. We hear his Spanish and French are pretty good. He came up with the idea for the band name "Interpol" because his Spanish speaking friends would teasingly call him "Pol, Pol, Interpol". "Pol" is Paul in Spanish. Paul's voice/singing style is constantly compared to that of the late and iconic Ian Curtis, quite a compliment don't you think?

Sam is the elder statesman in the group. He had a good deal of musical experience under his belt prior to joining Interpol. He lived in Florida for a couple of years and was part of a band called the Holy Terrors, a punk rock band. Things didn’t turn out as he had hoped for them but things would work out for Sam later on when he moved to NYC and met Daniel. Sam went to Interpol’s second show (Greg was still a member) and was very impressed, which says a lot because in the past, the only band he fully believed in was the Holy Terrors. When Greg departed and Daniel sent Sam the Interpol self released EP, Sam knew immediately that this was something he wanted to be part of and it has been a blessed union of souls ever since. It is hard to imagine Interpol with out Sam. Quite possibly the most humble and kind member in the band, he can also play the drums like a beast and it is really impressive that he can play in those dress shirts ;)

here goes for me. i've asked my friends about this but they don't hear it. interpole actually hurt my ears. not like facetious, 'they're so bad they hurt' but something, i'm thinking the way the cymbals were recorded, just kills my ears. it's actually painful. it's that high-end eee-eee-eee sound, the ride and the crashes, way up in the mix. anyone else?
