awesome album! one of my faves of the year.

Their self-released debut, Vol. 1 (2010) is nearly as great as the latest one! The haunted harmonies are already in full force, check out "Witches Garden." Apparently only 20 copies of the first run, ha ha. I imagine it will be re-released by next year, but 'til then, treat yerselves now. Linked from my site, or epicdoommetal.blogspot.com.

Do they ever play shows? Why is this band so mysterious?

Is it possible that they're another band on the same label playing under a different name?

billstevejim, Monday, 9 January 2012 06:55 (twelve years ago) link

no

Jimmy Riddle Orchestra (Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker), Monday, 9 January 2012 11:26 (twelve years ago) link

found a copy of this at home. it's rubbish

Crackle Box, Monday, 9 January 2012 11:41 (twelve years ago) link

maybe that's a bit harsh, was super excited to hear it. especially after reading this thread a few months ago. just found it flacid. no juju. contrived. like, imagine this is to be a gomez side project or something.

Crackle Box, Monday, 9 January 2012 12:04 (twelve years ago) link

gomez? i think you heard something other than uncle acid

Jimmy Riddle Orchestra (Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker), Monday, 9 January 2012 12:15 (twelve years ago) link

Maybe there's another Gomez

Tom D (Tom D.), Monday, 9 January 2012 12:33 (twelve years ago) link

One was enough

Jimmy Riddle Orchestra (Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker), Monday, 9 January 2012 12:37 (twelve years ago) link

they're my go-to band to describe anything lacking in balls. i probably just need to listen with a different head on. or with different people in the room.

have heard this band purson practicing recently, think rise above are putting their record out, they're sounding amazing

Crackle Box, Monday, 9 January 2012 13:01 (twelve years ago) link

Purson's singer was in Ipso Facto if anyone remembers them

lol indie from the Midlands if that helps

Buster Mottrhymes (DJ Mencap), Monday, 9 January 2012 13:52 (twelve years ago) link

"I'm Here To Kill You" kinda sounds like an improvement on "Take Me Away" by Ween.

found a copy of this at home. it's rubbish
I didn't like it immediately, but Side B is the jam. or track 5-8

xp Yeah someone last night said something similar.. "I bet it's The Shins lmao"

billstevejim, Monday, 9 January 2012 17:46 (twelve years ago) link

Has anyone seen them live yet? Thinking of possibly booking them...

Doran, Monday, 9 January 2012 23:58 (twelve years ago) link

XXXXXP: Are you sure you weren't listening to Wu Lyf? They sound like Gomez.

Doran, Monday, 9 January 2012 23:59 (twelve years ago) link

do you mean has anyone seen Uncle Acid live? p sure they've not played outside the studio, or they did really really early and it sucked so they wanted to get it completely right or something - there's an interview online somewhere that addresses this

Buster Mottrhymes (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 08:42 (twelve years ago) link

I wanted to buy this with my HMV Christmas voucher, but it was £21!! WTF?

I want your nose, your shoes and your unicycle (dog latin), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 09:54 (twelve years ago) link

This is all I can listen to this week. I love it. It's the effects they use on the guy's voice; like if John Lennon had decided to make a whole album of She's So Heavy and recorded it in a shed in the middle of the woods.

I want your nose, your shoes and your unicycle (dog latin), Thursday, 19 January 2012 14:07 (twelve years ago) link

PS - emailed them about playing a show - they said they're putting a line-up together or something.

haha, just noticed at least two people made the john lennon comparison upthread.

I want your nose, your shoes and your unicycle (dog latin), Thursday, 19 January 2012 14:19 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah it's totally great! I hope it does really well in the polls.

uncle acid and the absquatulators (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 19 January 2012 15:34 (twelve years ago) link

dog latin informed me they're from Cambridge - I really hope they play one of their first gigs in the back room of the Portland Arms.

Angrrau Birds (seandalai), Thursday, 19 January 2012 15:38 (twelve years ago) link

billstevejim, if you can name just 10 of those 9000 albums that sound as good as this, I'll be really happy.

Big Elf - Money Machine
Dead Meadow - Shivering Kings
Danava - s/t

I like the Uncle Acid a lot, but I'm not sure it's something I want to listen to over and over. I feel like it's awesome, but there's some unquantifiable element missing for me. Probably the sort of thing that will be easily cured by having a real performing lineup...

Nate Carson, Friday, 20 January 2012 11:16 (twelve years ago) link

Dead Meadow? lol

If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Friday, 20 January 2012 15:52 (twelve years ago) link

haha not in the same league as uncle acid. Neither are the other 2.

you're right. They're all better.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 20 January 2012 15:56 (twelve years ago) link

dead meadow was pretty cool

call all destroyer, Friday, 20 January 2012 15:57 (twelve years ago) link

maybe uncle acid need a new booking agent

Yeah as much as I love the Uncle Acid album, the s/t Danava is definitely better and I'd argue that half of Dead Meadow's discography is better too.

I mean, I enjoy Uncle Acid and I really want to see them succeed, but I don't think they are quite there yet.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Friday, 20 January 2012 16:00 (twelve years ago) link

I think this is a question of legitimacy, or the illusion of legitimacy. Uncle Acid sounds like a real metal album, one that might have been made in 76 (or even 84). Those others do not. Whether the whole thing's just a ruse, and Uncle Acid is just bald nerdy guys from Aquarius Records jamming with bald nerdy guys from some long forgotten Cathedral lineup (I'm not entirely convinced it isn't something like this), it's at least convincing. The Uncle Acid album sounds like the kind of album that would have, like, backward messages and shit. Dead Meadow sounds like guys who own Bluetip and Rain Like The Sound Of Trains albums.

If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Friday, 20 January 2012 16:50 (twelve years ago) link

okay, this is pretty damn great. big, thick stoner rock sound, catchy songs, sabbath vocals. reminds me strongly of the witch debut from '06. similar reference points, stoner-patented circular riffing, reedy singing, paranoid fantasy lyrics. and yeah, dead meadow, maybe witchcraft at a substantially more reverentially revivalist remove. something makes me wanna say that it would appeal to fans of the black angels.

since the comparison was made, to my mind, this is nowhere near as catchy, surprising, endearing or memorable as ghost's opus eponymous (my hands-down favorite album of 2011), and when it comes to this particular sound, i think i still prefer the witch record (one of the best rock records of the last decade, so hardly a damning second place). downsides: the solos often bore me, and there's a pall of familiarity that sets in quickly after "i'll cut you down". upsides: SIDE 2! "i am here to kill you", "13 candles" and "ritual knife" are fucking great.

"authenticity" is for squares

Little GTFO (contenderizer), Friday, 20 January 2012 16:51 (twelve years ago) link

basically, i like four songs here, the other four and kind of tedious and, yeah, might as well be dead meadow or something.

13 Candles is my jam

I want your nose, your shoes and your unicycle (dog latin), Friday, 20 January 2012 17:49 (twelve years ago) link

yeah, best song on the album

Little GTFO (contenderizer), Friday, 20 January 2012 18:08 (twelve years ago) link

xp to contenderizer: I wonder if that's the secret behind the huge amount of buzz this album's getting round these parts: just about the time the novelty of the whole Sabbath Ono Band shtick wears off, BAM! Kill You/13 Candles/Ritual Knife (ie the best part of the album)...

uncle acid and the absquatulators (Drugs A. Money), Saturday, 21 January 2012 01:26 (twelve years ago) link

Kill You/13 Candles/Ritual Knife (ie the best part of the album)

this is true

billstevejim, Saturday, 21 January 2012 02:16 (twelve years ago) link

it makes me wish i owned the vinyl just so i could fall asleep to Side B every night

billstevejim, Saturday, 21 January 2012 02:17 (twelve years ago) link

I already regret dropping this from my best of '11 ballot, as I really, really dig this.

On last.fm there's a meagre 55k plays which astounds me. Why isn't UA&tDB this decade's Queens of the Stone Age yet? Or will they be in a year or two but we're just in early? It's got all the potential to be huge I think, playing big summer festivals and all. Or do they wilfully shy away?

Flag post? I hardly knew her! (Le Bateau Ivre), Friday, 3 February 2012 13:45 (twelve years ago) link

Oh, it's actually 100k+50k = 150k plays in different spelling of the band name. Point still stands though.

Flag post? I hardly knew her! (Le Bateau Ivre), Friday, 3 February 2012 13:46 (twelve years ago) link

it's probably because their official releases are more or less nonexistent!

call all destroyer, Friday, 3 February 2012 14:04 (twelve years ago) link

^^^^ This. Its been nearly impossible to track down their stuff up to this point, I'm hoping all this buzz will lead to a deal with a decent label that can handle distributing this stuff. I really, really want to support these guys but I keep missing out on the ultra-limited runs of CD-Rs.

Gonjasufjanstephen O'Malley (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 3 February 2012 14:40 (twelve years ago) link

I bought the CD for $12 (10 euros) from Svart.
It has been on steady rotation in my car since I got it a few months ago. Early November?

La Lechera, Friday, 3 February 2012 14:52 (twelve years ago) link

it is way early LBI; one of the things that makes me happy about Blood Lust making top 10 is that as far as token rock/metal albums go, it really is a super-hip choice. Outside of some timy doom/stoner blogs and boards, and ILX, their exposure is nil, and any blip they make in the larger culture (Quietus end of year wrap-up, a few stray votes in the P&J) can be traced back to this board...

Today is Cocaine's Birthday! (Drugs A. Money), Friday, 3 February 2012 18:16 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, that's definitely true Drugs A. Do you agree they have the potential to be this decade's QOTSA? It really feels like they can put a festival audience under their spell like that band. Love ILM for bringing attention to this band. WE WERE FIRST! <3

Flag post? I hardly knew her! (Le Bateau Ivre), Friday, 3 February 2012 18:19 (twelve years ago) link

DFFD was before ILM, and DFFD was unlikely to be the first.

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Friday, 3 February 2012 18:32 (twelve years ago) link

love this, wish i'd heard it before i voted. would have been top 3 for me!

omar little, Friday, 3 February 2012 18:59 (twelve years ago) link

I tried to sign up for an account with DFFD; they never got back with me!

Today is Cocaine's Birthday! (Drugs A. Money), Friday, 3 February 2012 19:08 (twelve years ago) link

You aren't kvlt enough I guess.
