I've got this one but it isn't that great:

http://www.musicfanclubs.org/cure/boots/hothothot.html

I also have Swinging Piggy In The Mirror lying around somewhere.

The version of "Forever" on the Faith bonus disc is... disturbing. I LONG FOR AND LUST AFTER THE CURIOSITY VERSION.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 2 May 2005 18:25 (nineteen years ago) link

Very late to the table on this thread. In any case, I picked up the re-issues for Faith, Pornography and Seventeen Seconds this weekend. I'm rationalizing the expenditure by giving the versions of each album I already had (the reg'lar Elektra editions) to my punk/metal-discovering 12 year old nephew. I wasn't going to pick them up at first, until I saw all the rarieites/extras. To finally be able to hear tracks that originally appeared on the Curiosity compilation (side b of the cassette of Concert) remastered in their full glory is my goal. I have those tracks culled together on a bootleg, but the sound quality is a marked upgrade from what I had before. Anyway, blah blah blah blah blah.....I'd forgotten how fucking amazing these records are.

The Killing Joke back catalogue is being re-issued later this year. Here's hoping they follow this example.

Don't forget the Siouxsie reissues!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 2 May 2005 18:29 (nineteen years ago) link

Okay, I'd forgotten that "Charlotte Sometimes" is FUCKING AWESOME. Oh my God.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 2 May 2005 18:34 (nineteen years ago) link

and Talking Heads!

mzui (mzui), Monday, 2 May 2005 18:36 (nineteen years ago) link

On that bleak track
See the sun is gone again
Tears were pouring down her face
She was crying and crying
For a girl who died
So many years before

(SO GREAT)

(Also that extended chord on the words "Charlotte Sometimes" with all the ninths and elevenths in it!)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 2 May 2005 18:36 (nineteen years ago) link

I need to arrange an a capella version of this song.

I remember reading a Cure write-up long ago that was talking about the amazing imagery of Smith's lyrics and quoted as an example "'Come to escape,' he says/And Charlotte sometimes..." I think I went completely postal in ridiculing this writer. I think it's in Ten Imaginary Years somewhere.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 2 May 2005 18:41 (nineteen years ago) link

My favorite is the rendition of "Charlotte Sometimes" on Concert. I picked up the Concert cassette on a bike trip through Europe in 1987, and was forever flipping the tape over. Right at the end of "Charlotte Sometimes", on the flip was the beginning of "All Mine" (a song fragment that haunts me to this day)...which i was continually listening to over and over and over...

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 2 May 2005 18:44 (nineteen years ago) link

I was thinking about compiling a double CD of live tracks as an alternative version of Curiosity.

It would be a great listen, there are lots of superb versions of songs that spring to mind, it could start at '79 and go through to '04.

Anyone interested? Any song suggestions?

mzui (mzui), Monday, 2 May 2005 19:15 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm in. There are a few songs I'd suggest but in many cases I don't know the performances they're from...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 2 May 2005 19:24 (nineteen years ago) link

Okay, I'll get a tracklist together....Any more, c'mon peeps, let me abuse my work's facilities here!

mzui (mzui), Monday, 2 May 2005 19:27 (nineteen years ago) link

"Temptation" is begging to be drowned in Pornography murk. I am loving this to bits.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 2 May 2005 19:37 (nineteen years ago) link

OMG "A Strange Day"!!!!!!!!!!!! This is fucking awesome.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 2 May 2005 20:19 (nineteen years ago) link

"PORNOGRAPHY" OMG

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 2 May 2005 20:24 (nineteen years ago) link

Hehehe.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 2 May 2005 20:28 (nineteen years ago) link

"Temptation Two"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HOW AWESOME!

Half of these demos are like Seventeen Seconds with fangs.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 2 May 2005 20:39 (nineteen years ago) link

And now there's no more surprise and you have to wait.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 2 May 2005 20:40 (nineteen years ago) link

The hilarious thing is that all through "Temptation Two" I was sitting here going, "God, this sounds EXACTLY LIKE another song, but not 'Let's Go To Bed'..." and then I went, "Oh yeah, 'Temptation' from earlier on the CD. Duh."

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 2 May 2005 20:47 (nineteen years ago) link

Hahaha.

And then you started humming "Oh you've got grey eyes, oh you've got green eyes..."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 2 May 2005 20:48 (nineteen years ago) link

"Airlock" is kind of every stupid idea art students have about incidental film music wrapped up into one horrid little composition. I have no time for it.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 2 May 2005 20:49 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, but there's giggling.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 2 May 2005 20:50 (nineteen years ago) link

(I like to imagine that the film shows three little dark elves dancing around and murdering Chopin.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 2 May 2005 20:50 (nineteen years ago) link

Meanwhile, Carnage Visors details the slow crawl of a guy getting out of his chair and eventually washing his hands.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 2 May 2005 20:51 (nineteen years ago) link

Carnage Visors is a stroke by stroke aural recreation of a slow, intense bout of sexing!

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 2 May 2005 20:58 (nineteen years ago) link

I would worry about this if Joei heard it and said "I have a headache."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 2 May 2005 21:24 (nineteen years ago) link

Count me in the alternate Curosity thingy. I was thinking of doing sth similar tracking the evolution of 'Forever' over the years. Although, if I pick one version per tour between 1981 and 2004, it will have to be a double CD and that would maybe be a bit much to take in...

Baaderonixxxorzh (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 07:12 (nineteen years ago) link

Good Stuff.

Does anyone have a note (or know where to find a note) of the locations of the Curiosity live tracks, my tape is up the loft.

mzui (mzui), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 08:35 (nineteen years ago) link

So let's get the track list started! This should def. include 'All I wanna do is kill her', which seems lost since it didn't appear on the Porn reissue. Although if we get all nerdy about it, one could argue that 'All Mine' and 'All I wanna do...' are improvised variations on a same theme. Or are they? Is 'All Mine' a version of 'Forever' or is it an altogether different beast? The public has the right to know!

And now that I think of it, what happened to 'Ariel'?

Baaderonixxxorzh (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 09:11 (nineteen years ago) link

'AM' the early version of In Your House - Birmingham '79

Lament - Bath or Brighton 83 (whichever is better)

I Dig You + Cult Hero (with Frank on vocals) Barfly London March 04

I Hate Rock & Roll (improv based on Three if memory serves) Holland 81

Happy Birthday Simon/Three/All Mine Belgium 81

mzui (mzui), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 09:27 (nineteen years ago) link

The Holy Hour - Werchter Festival 81

mzui (mzui), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 09:29 (nineteen years ago) link

All I have To Do is Kill Her - another 'Three' Improv Paris 82

mzui (mzui), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 09:30 (nineteen years ago) link

holy shit, I ordered all three from DeepDiscount CDs on Thursday and they arrived here on Monday!

I was really on the fence about buying "Seventeen Seconds" but am very glad. The remastering alone makes these discs worthy. I listened to the Cure prior to "Head On the Door" only on cassette, and in that situation almost exclusively through crappy Walkman headphones. Listening now through a real stereo (and even on my computer's Altec's) is eye opening. AWESOME.

My complaint is that I really don't see the point of the live tracks included...I'd much, much, much rather just have a reissue of all-live stuff.

FYI, I remember searching and searching and FINALLY finding a "Concert" import CD in college and selling a textbook to go buy it.

ronny longjohns (ronny longjohns), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 14:35 (nineteen years ago) link

Thank you very much, that is most helpful.

Now, one question, do I put any Disintegration tracks on this comp, if so which?

mzui (mzui), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 17:59 (nineteen years ago) link

"Harold And Joe" - London 1991 (rare)
"Disintegration" - Chicago 2-25-2000
the Entreat version of "Prayers For Rain"
"Foxy Lady" - Manchester 1992

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 18:04 (nineteen years ago) link

Yes, that would do for a start...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 18:05 (nineteen years ago) link

They played Foxy Lady in 1992??

"Happy the Man" Paris, 1984
"Away (Cut)" London Town and Country, 1991 (actually all the early Wish songs on this are worth it)
"Letter to Elise" MTV Unplugged, 1991

Baaderonixxxorzh (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 07:07 (nineteen years ago) link

Can do most of the above, there's probably a better quality 'Happy The Man' from Washington 84, tracklist for the first CD coming soon (it's a triple!)

mzui (mzui), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 07:35 (nineteen years ago) link

A Strange Day never sounded better. I listened to Pornography three times right through before I even thought about the extras disk.

I didn't think it was possible for me to love this album more, but I do.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 13:16 (nineteen years ago) link

Mzui, you are a glorious man. :-)

Anyone want to design a cover?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 13:45 (nineteen years ago) link

It should be a cheap photocopy a la "Concert"

Baaderonixxxorzh (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 14:02 (nineteen years ago) link

:-(

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 14:03 (nineteen years ago) link

But that's a good thing! Anyway, I'm impatient to see the tracklist of this and shall soon start working on my Forever live compilation...

Baaderonixxxorzh (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 14:08 (nineteen years ago) link

In that case shall I bother putting in any versions of Forever, I had intended to include at least one, a freakout version with Hartley's keyboards!

mzui (mzui), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 15:15 (nineteen years ago) link

Properly printed full colour artwork will be included.
This is going to take a little while to collate folks so be patient, but the first CD tracklist should be along in a day or two.

mzui (mzui), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 15:19 (nineteen years ago) link

No Curiosity is complete without a version of Forever! (plus who knows when I'll get around doing this...)

Baaderonixxxorzh (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 18:21 (nineteen years ago) link

I still want the Curiosity version of "Forever" on an official CD release.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 18:24 (nineteen years ago) link

It was recorded in 1984 = look for it as a bonus with either The Top or Concert

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 18:28 (nineteen years ago) link

And what about 'Ariel'?

Baaderonixxxorzh (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 18:39 (nineteen years ago) link

Didn't they do "A Japanese Dream" on The Kissing Tour? I need a live version of that.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 18:43 (nineteen years ago) link
