We will create a new song, a new anthem.” As if to clinch the argument, he added, “Wall Street was built by the Dutch to keep the Native Americans out!” Here, microscopically, were the two sides of Occupy Wall Street: those who believed they were reclaiming an American value that had been lost, and those who believed that there was nothing to reclaim, that an acceptable history did not exist and would have to be created from scratch after a revolution.

Simons said the chamber's motives were influenced by banks and large corporations, noting that board members are employed by Visa, Wells Fargo and AT&T.

The business groups pushed for Occupy to be evicted from its first camp at 14th Street and Broadway, Simons said. "They're out here trying to make a buck in this neighborhood through gentrification," he said. "They need to know we're here, too."

I really wish they'd camp in the park with that horrible Remember Them public sculpture that was basically corporate money doing an end run around duly elected and appointed government bodies. It does sound like their new site is closer to that, at least.

Those they could not separate, they pepper-sprayed directly in the face, holding these students as they did so. When students covered their eyes with their clothing, police forced open their mouths and pepper-sprayed down their throats.

I've been lurking on this thread for a while and that video has depressed and angered me. I'm in the UK and don't have a lot of money at the moment, but I'm wondering. Is there a site you can send money to that can help with the legal costs of the protesters? No country should be doing that to their citizens. Hope you all come out of this for the better. Apologies for the rambling.

i know this is 'legal' in the sense that, like, police can do anything, but how can this happen in broad daylight? i just don't get it

I saw somewhere that Cali courts have said that pepper-spraying people who aren't being actively violent or physically confrontation is excessive use of force - which puts the pigs squarely in the wrong.
