That thing I linked to is a 'spoof' of some sort apparently. I thought it was pretty good to be honest.

The band just told me they have their page up now. They are something special. My #6 album of 2011!

Ever crave a band that's so downtuned that you can actually track the motion of the strings and feel the vibrations in your internal organs? Chile's At Devil Dirt has a doozy for you. It's hard to believe it's just two guys, as their debut self-titled album has a mammoth sludgy fuzz sound worthy of Electric Wizard, Goatsnake, Kyuss and Floor/Torche, with some pretty inventive psychedelic vocals with harmonies. On "Rocknrolla" they even bring to mind T. Rex!

This band from Argentina (instrumental stoner/psych) is a late discovery:

I upload stuff to bandcamp. Older stuff - guitar based sadcore or jangle pop. Newer stuff - more new wave. Most of it is free if you want it.

Some great Kraut-ish jams from Indirect:

(They aren't free/name your price so I won't link them, but Fang Wizard has a fun album from TeenBeat available for download on bandcamp, and there are a couple of great post-punk-type singles by Friends for dirt cheap from the Lucky Number label on the site as well.)

This being the hub for all things Steven R. Smith (formerly of Mirza, Thuja, Hala Straana and solo artist). His latest OLD SKETE is a must-listen for rustic drone types.

And thanks for the kind words WRT The Rowell Incident upthread. There will probably be some more solo synth/drone stuff going up in the nearish future.

I'm listening to the Airs record that I linked to up above as "shoegaze with black metal elements." There is no black metal in this that I can ascertain. So if that scared you off, have no fear – this is pretty straight up staring at footwear.

i didn't find the sample song scary at all, but maybe the rest is terrifying. i'll find out soon.

La Lechera, Monday, 23 January 2012 23:30 (twelve years ago) link

Sounds more like soothing ambient than scary to me. I, being Scott Walker, will not be associated with such half-witted muzak. They could have at least punched some pig meat, you know, to show they mean it.

future debts collector (Le Bateau Ivre), Monday, 23 January 2012 23:31 (twelve years ago) link

That kind of overpowering, claustrophobic drone always gets to me for some reason.

It seems to lean a lot on effects, like the wind blowing over an icy polar landscape. But I do like it, yes.

Album gets better along the way, but it still sounds fairly sad-ambient-cliché to be honest

future debts collector (Le Bateau Ivre), Monday, 23 January 2012 23:44 (twelve years ago) link

I don't know man, are you listening to ambient for innovation and excitement? Because I think you might have the wrong genre for that.

georgie gould, aka bulldog eyes, is one of the best songwriters alive.

to tell you the truth, i can't get into her new stuff. it's too impenetrable, both in terms of structure and production. a lot of people seem to like it though.

her old stuff, though - there's almost nothing that isn't gold before late 2016. i've still never heard anything like it. she takes these disparate sounds and textures - jazzy nylon-string, raspy electric guitar, clipped-to-death drum samples, feedback, midi keyboards and soft, buried-in-the-mix vocals - and fashions them into something totally unique, catchy, cohesive and very beautiful.

she's been having financial trouble for a long time, so i'm sure buying her stuff would help her out - everthing's name-your-price.

i'm just gonna post every album i love (apart from the ones she's deleted) here:

This is pretty great- a gig Ben Goldberg did at The Stone in 2014. I can't improve on his description so here it is:

In February/March 2014 I had a one week residency at The Stone in New York -- 12 sets in 6 days. For the last set of the last night I assembled some of my favorite musicians -- Liberty Ellman, Steve Cardenas, Trevor Dunn, Ches Smith, and Rob Sudduth -- and we performed one of my favorite songs, "Let's Cool One" by Thelonious Monk. Fatigue had set in but the mind was open, and we played at the slowest tempo I could imagine, right around quarter note = 13 seconds. I had a feeling that something would take over sooner or later, and I think I was right. The song lasted 44 minutes. Luckily it was recorded. Now I give it to you and hope you get something from it. Love to all.
