Aesthetically Uggs are not too great but damned if I'm not crazy envious of women wearing tall Uggs with skirts while waiting for the train on very cold days. The look so warm and soft. I also assume these women change into normal shoes when they arrive at their destination.
And I'm not sure I'm any better looking in my flats or non-Uggs and long socks or leg warmers over tights or leggings.

i used to rock the big furry boots (not uggs more like mukluks) look 10 years ago but people still wore skirts and pants back then.
― bene_gesserit, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 19:20 (twelve years ago) link
remember those boot cut black stretch pants everyone wore at the end of the 90s?
― La Lechera, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 19:22 (twelve years ago) link
yes! they are indestructible, btw; i still have two pairs of them that i wear to work out when i haven't done laundry in a while.
― horseshoe, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 19:25 (twelve years ago) link
ha i got a pair at lerner that i still wear to bed/gym
― La Lechera, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 19:26 (twelve years ago) link
they were the occasion for some mom-like tsking in my head the last time i went out dancing and the 21-year-old girls were wearing very very short dresses. i was like, at least, in my day, when we went dancing, we wore pants! i just feel like how can you even dance in a micro-mini? /mom

I saw a girl at a nightclub wearing those underpants-looking hotpants & got the vapors
― Janet Snakehole (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 19:29 (twelve years ago) link
Funny thread! I bought my 7 year old niece a pair of Uggs for Christmas and that's where they belong, on Children. When I last went to Austin, T and I saw endless girls wearing baby T shirts with leggings and dress shoes. It's sort of embarrassing. A long shirt or sweater yeah, but one girl's shirt fell above the top of her leggings.
― JacobSanders, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 19:45 (twelve years ago) link
I worked in a University that seems to be particularly well known for its annoying students a few years ago and around 08-09 every other girl was walking around wearing tights as leggings (with nothing long over the top). They also wore PJ bottoms in the gym. I pretty much turned into my mother overnight.
I really hate the fashion industry for basically forcing me to wear leggings due to 99% of dresses in regular shops that I like being too short to wear without.
― kinder, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 20:12 (twelve years ago) link
They also wore PJ bottoms in the gym
lol that's nothing. I went to a stoner hippie school for a while and a lot of kids would go to class literally wearing what they'd gone to bed in. One of my professors actually had to tell a class that they needed to dress/wash themselves before coming to her class. NB - I never did this.
― ☆★☆彡彡 (ENBB), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 20:14 (twelve years ago) link
ha, I came v v close to the brink of going to the corner store in my PJ bottoms over Christmas to get hangover food. I had to have a long hard think about things after that.

if i can't go to the gym/store in my lounge pants, i don't even want to know what other rules i'm violating
― La Lechera, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 20:18 (twelve years ago) link
Oh, I think lounge pants are OK. Like, yoga pants? I've changed out of PJ bottoms into those when going out in public which really isn't that much of a diff but nobody needs to see my flannel PJs imo.
― ☆★☆彡彡 (ENBB), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 20:21 (twelve years ago) link
thank you this trend
― puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 20:23 (twelve years ago) link
flannel pjs in public is the worst imo. a gaggle of teen girls came into the place where I get my lunch wearing pj bottoms, uggs, tiny tank tops & with the worst birdsnested sideways bedhair...I was like "Did you come here straight from a gangbang? Jesus, put some clothes on."
― Janet Snakehole (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 20:24 (twelve years ago) link
none of that bothers me at all -- if people smell, that's one thing, but general slovenliness is a person's right
― La Lechera, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 20:26 (twelve years ago) link
in teenagers it disturbs me. brings out my dormant mom-gene
― Janet Snakehole (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 20:28 (twelve years ago) link
that pjs and uggs thing not so much slovenliness as a pretty carefully cultivated look. on campus in the summer or fall it's usually running shorts and a sorority t-shirt with running shoes. like every. single. day.
― ryan, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 21:43 (twelve years ago) link
I remember back in lolcollege that tons of people, male and female alike, would wear those snapaway track pants everywhere. I'll cop to owning a few pairs, but they never left my dorm or apartment.

I sort of like the giant moon boot shape in contrast w a close-fitting leg, it's space-suity from the future and/or kind of a super-hero look that I can dig.
Yeah, it gives off a very '2000AD' type silhouette. Reminds me of Halo Jones or something.

tight black leggings and boots are a bad look 50% of the time and pretty awesome the other 50%
unfortunately the difference is completely within my prejudices so it's probably better to avoid it

i saw a whole GROUP of girls wearing tight black leggings like pants today. but they were all running, so weirdly they didn't look like they weren't wearing pants. not even when they stopped running at the crosswalks.

I wear tight black leggings while running. Totally socially acceptable.
― Jeff, Thursday, 19 January 2012 00:56 (twelve years ago) link

I saw a girl at the grocery story with those thin leggings-tights and a short t-shirt. It was like her legs were just lightly sprayed with black cotton spray, and it sort of looked like she was naked. (Like when you see girls in bodypaint and you know they're naked but you try to pretend they're not, or viceversa). She was tiny and cute and had a nice ass so w/e, but it's still a weird look for buying milk.
