haven't been following this, but glad to see hammers take it. one of my favorite bands going, and probably my single favorite album of the year (if i exclude ghost on the basis of last-year-ness and E-40 on the basis of two-album-ness).

Little GTFO (contenderizer), Saturday, 21 January 2012 00:26 (twelve years ago) link

Figured I deserved a treat for having to walk to the train in shitting snow, so I stopped by Reckless and picked up Esoteric and Devils Blood thanks to this poll. Good job guys. Also, Krallice sounds fucking great walking in shitting down snow.

Oh well, I missed a bunch of results to the cut-off, but I will say that one of the soundtracks to my insomnia has been the staccato female-vox chorus to the title track of that Hammers of Misfortune record. And in a good way.

emil.y, Saturday, 21 January 2012 04:56 (twelve years ago) link

good song that. Everyone needs to go back and check their other records!

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Saturday, 21 January 2012 05:40 (twelve years ago) link

nice list

I have only heard three of the top 10 albums which is really quite remiss

moreso because I've *felt* like there's been no shortage of quality metal in my lyfe during 2011

Touched By Angel Rangel (DJ Mencap), Saturday, 21 January 2012 11:14 (twelve years ago) link

Great list thanks. Sorry I didn't have time to participate this year.

Doran, Saturday, 21 January 2012 12:50 (twelve years ago) link

dj mencap you got to check those albums out then!

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Saturday, 21 January 2012 14:33 (twelve years ago) link

Great job everyone. Once again I'm stunned over the amount of great music.
Having Spotify in the U.S. sure helps. Thanks for the playlists.

Love the stats too.

Steampig, Saturday, 21 January 2012 15:18 (twelve years ago) link

glad you dug it!

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Saturday, 21 January 2012 18:01 (twelve years ago) link

I thought more people would have been shocked at how close it was. Decided by the last ballot!

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Sunday, 22 January 2012 00:20 (twelve years ago) link

thank you so much ilm for recognizing corrupted, that album is incredible, I am so happy they landed at number 2. I didn't vote cuz I listened to like maybe 3 metal albums last year, but last year was also when corrupted became my favourite band. <3 can't wait to listen to moe from this list.

marc iv, Sunday, 22 January 2012 00:37 (twelve years ago) link

if you had Corrupted would have won!

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Sunday, 22 January 2012 02:45 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah but Kerr you wouldn't accept three-album ballots so really its your fault! ;)

uncle acid and the absquatulators (Drugs A. Money), Sunday, 22 January 2012 03:26 (twelve years ago) link

wait wait wait!! Hold the godamn phonw... you mean to tell me BATILLUS did not even make this list?!?!??? A tragedy for sure.. You guys need to seriously check out that record! would've been my number 2 or 3..

Jon you must have snagged the last copy of The Devil's Blood at Reckless. Are you going to see Ghost/Blood Ceremony/Ancient VVisdom on Tue at Bottom Lounge? Anyone else going?

Fastnbulbous, Sunday, 22 January 2012 16:23 (twelve years ago) link

Oops, sorry about that! Didn't mean to grab the last one! Its fantastic though!

I'm thinking about it, I really want to go, but with the little guy's sleeping issues over the past couple of weeks it may be tough to leave the wife to deal with it on her own. I may still try to make it work though.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Sunday, 22 January 2012 16:38 (twelve years ago) link

Let me know if you do. I don't know if anyone else I know will be going, being a January Tuesday night, and it's good to have someone to talk to in between sets.

I just finished my second listen to the Turisas. J3ff T. was right, it is a huge improvement from their last album. Also, I'm not usually keen on much black metal, but I did enjoy the Absu.

Fastnbulbous, Sunday, 22 January 2012 17:35 (twelve years ago) link

Been meaning to hear that Corrupted album all year. Is there an easy way of buying it in the UK?

Derartu Cthulhu (NickB), Sunday, 22 January 2012 17:46 (twelve years ago) link

CD or download or whatever.

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Sunday, 22 January 2012 17:51 (twelve years ago) link

Fastnbulbous I did not know you lived in Chicago!? It wasn't until you mentioned eating at Kuma's that I realized it, actually. Maybe I'm dense.
Anyway, I was (still am) thinking about seeing Yob at the EB on Wednesday but it depends on how my first week of classes goes. Usually it's either really chill or really horrific. I assure you that I am a nice person to talk to between sets should the opportunity ever present itself.

La Lechera, Sunday, 22 January 2012 17:58 (twelve years ago) link

I would happily have a drink with anyone who posts here who's in the area. I'll send a PM with contact info. It's going to be a challenge to get my butt out two weeknights in a row for Ghost and Yob but I will try, as I'd hate to miss these bands.

Fastnbulbous, Sunday, 22 January 2012 18:07 (twelve years ago) link

Thank you K!

Derartu Cthulhu (NickB), Sunday, 22 January 2012 18:38 (twelve years ago) link

Got it! The chance that I'll go on Wednesday is pretty slim, but it's good to know for the future that if I go to a show I will have an irl person to talk to :)

La Lechera, Sunday, 22 January 2012 18:56 (twelve years ago) link

just dont bring your dog or she will annoy it!

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Sunday, 22 January 2012 19:21 (twelve years ago) link

btw did you all notice that the albums that were campaigned for all did very well? each time someone campaigned for an album i noticed it got points in following ballots. So if there's any albums you hear in 2012 you really love, start a thread on it and campaign for it in polls as it really works! Look at how well Uncle Acid did. It made me realise that not everyone reads the rolling metal thread but they might read an album thread.

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Sunday, 22 January 2012 19:34 (twelve years ago) link

Also Barn Owl made the previous poll, so funny how people are saying anything now.

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Monday, 23 January 2012 00:05 (twelve years ago) link

Amazon has some great prices just now on some of the albums here. Picked up the cauldron for £5.99

jeff and his hamster say to buy Turisas for £6.99 http://www.amazon.co.uk/Stand-Up-Fight-Turisas/dp/B004IKDUUK/ref=pd_rhf_se_shvl10

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Monday, 23 January 2012 00:09 (twelve years ago) link

Anyone with an amazon account that fancies doing a list with all the albums in the 125?

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Monday, 23 January 2012 00:15 (twelve years ago) link

Fastnbulbous - I'll be at EB Yob show wed. - would love to chat tunes with ya - met la lechera at agalloch this past year - always good to see Chicago ilxers

BlackIronPrison, Monday, 23 January 2012 03:44 (twelve years ago) link

My yob lp never arrived. Ordered it 4 or 5 months ago :(

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Monday, 23 January 2012 08:49 (twelve years ago) link

I wasn't online much over the weekend, so thanks for another excellent poll! A very strong top ten this year (I like every record on it), and a worthy winner IMO. I happened to download the Hammers of Misfortune record during the run-down, and it's a great record- heavy but melodic, some lovely songs, good mellow moments and some nice soloing too. A great all-rounder, and I can see how it came out on top.

good luck in your pyramid (Neil S), Monday, 23 January 2012 09:36 (twelve years ago) link

Glad you liked it. It was just outside my top 10 , but as you said it was a strong year. I didn't expect it to win nor did I expect Corrupted to do so well. It was ahead til the last ballot.

Anyone going to buy anything? I picked up the Cauldron cd cheap from amazon and ordered a couple of relatively cheap cds from play.com. Bought the Devil LP and Hands Of Orlac LP from ebay.

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Monday, 23 January 2012 11:29 (twelve years ago) link

I probably should have voted in this poll! -- things got too hectic. Had I voted, if anybody's interested, I would have most helped the albums toward the top of this countdown, plus Midnight Chaser (which I heard too late to make the Rhapsody list) and Badmouth (which Rhapsody doesn't carry) -- neither of which got any votes anyway, as far as I can tell:

xhuxk, Monday, 23 January 2012 14:33 (twelve years ago) link

chuck you should have voted but I thought you had given up on us as you didn't vote last year or the year before iirc?

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Monday, 23 January 2012 19:27 (twelve years ago) link

did any of your reviews for the Cauldron album mention 'tears of cum'?

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Monday, 23 January 2012 19:27 (twelve years ago) link

*barf*

uncle acid and the absquatulators (Drugs A. Money), Monday, 23 January 2012 19:38 (twelve years ago) link

I didn't give up on the poll; I gave up on metal! But this year I changed my mind back I guess. And I'm not blaming you for me not voting; I had my chance. Anyway, nah, I don't think I mentioned that lyric, though I agree that's what it sounds like he's saying. Totally catchy song, either way.

xhuxk, Monday, 23 January 2012 19:47 (twelve years ago) link

Actually in that Rhapsody review I call it "a dirty song about a tragic Canadian Playboy bunny" (it's "dedicated to the memory of Dorothy Stratten" in the liner notes), so I guess I wanted to hint at the actual words without giving them away.

xhuxk, Monday, 23 January 2012 19:56 (twelve years ago) link

I don't think it's intentional, but it totally sounds like that. I wonder if they even noticed it before others pointed it out?

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 00:36 (twelve years ago) link

I've been assuming it was intentional! But of course there's no way to know for sure.

Enjoying Weekend Nachos a lot -

I want your nose, your shoes and your unicycle (dog latin), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 01:47 (twelve years ago) link

theres a lot to enjoy. you going to catch up on metal in 2011 and keep up with 2012 dog latin?

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 02:18 (twelve years ago) link

Nice list Chuck. So after reading the poll results, might there be anything else that would have made your list?

Fastnbulbous, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 05:05 (twelve years ago) link

Give him a chance to listen!

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 08:26 (twelve years ago) link

Curious about Uncle Acid, Devil's Blood, maybe a few others. (Haven't really studied the whole list.) But those two aren't on Rhapsody, and I'm cheap, and I don't download unless somebody is paying me to write about something. So who knows when I'll hear them. If they show up in dollar CD bins 20 years from now, though, I'm there.
