i keep having these moments of remembering some flash or another and i can feel my heart rate spike and i want to break something

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Sunday, 5 February 2012 19:03 (twelve years ago) link

That's what it is like to be in a double bind, hoos. Tha police have been given a free pass to break things and be abusive, to commit blatant injustices, trample on your freedoms, and ignore all the rules of civilization, up to and including manslaughter.

If these acts trigger your anger (as they ought) and you allow your anger to manifest itself, even in ways FAR less abusive or uncivil than the cops do with perfect impugnity, your lack of a license brands you as a criminal and an outcast, and legitimizes the police abuse. Like I said, double bind.

aimless otm; that's part of why peaceful protest requires some immensely deep injustices before a populace embraces it

Absolutely no headlines anywhere of front pages of CNN msnbc or fox

Only national news website I see with a story is salon, which does a good job at outlining the chronology

Just saw a headline that read Police Clean Park, An End To Occupy DC, this was the beaumont,tx newspaper with a photo of police in bio gear. Under the headline it said police take precautions due to diseases found in park due to camping!!! Really??

JacobSanders, Sunday, 5 February 2012 19:56 (twelve years ago) link

Putting on biohazard suits makes for good photos. It visually says "dirty hippies" and "menace to society" and will instantly be understood as such, and few Americans will question whether the action was ordered purely for the purpose of propaganda. It is pure genius in its own ugly, nasty way.

Aimless, Sunday, 5 February 2012 20:01 (twelve years ago) link

Not to mention that spilled blood, these days, is considered a biohazardous contaminant, so the very act of breaking protestors's heads provides an automatic excuse for the suits.

Aimless, Sunday, 5 February 2012 20:04 (twelve years ago) link

Disgusted with my country right now.

Last comment on this: hospital workers encounter diseases and spilled blood every single day in much more dangerous ways than during a park cleanup, and somehow or other they manage to cope wearing only non-latex gloves, not full hazmat suits.

Despite having been given assurances that they could peaceably protest on the sidewalk outside Manhattan's glitzy Waldorf-Astoria, on Saturday the NYPD broke up the Occupy Wall Street demonstration during the Human Rights Campaign $650/plate gala to honor Goldman Sachs....

For those who don't know, HRC is a bunch of useless sellout faggots well-heeled gay 'activist' group with a history of comfy corporate laziness.

Chris Hedges - Black Bloc: The Cancer in Occupy

http://www.truth-out.org/black-bloc-cancer-occupy/1328541484

The Black Bloc’s thought-terminating cliché of “diversity of tactics” in the end opens the way for hundreds or thousands of peaceful marchers to be discredited by a handful of hooligans. The state could not be happier.

Friends in Oakland understandably outraged by this article. My favorite comment so far: "I wonder if Chris would have escaped through the torn down fence or chained himself to it"

Haven't watched this yet, but comes heavily vouched for:

Milton Parker, Monday, 6 February 2012 20:35 (twelve years ago) link

I share some of his sentiments, but the way he closes that article loses me entirely. People were not throwing flowerpots at cops because it was fun. That's just clearly not what happened and I hope he walks it back a tiny bit before dismissing the term "diversity of tactics" as a cliché.

Milton Parker, Monday, 6 February 2012 20:48 (twelve years ago) link

god it's like Seattle 1999 all over again.

nobody's learned anything on either side.

sleeve, Monday, 6 February 2012 20:50 (twelve years ago) link

as someone who spent a lot of time with the Oakland Commune, I have to agree with Chris here. 'diversity of tactics' as invoked at the GAs was always specifically made in reference to the camp's position on violent protesters, who a lot of the regulars weren't willing to question due to the popular 'fuck the police' feeling around Oakland (understandable). know people like to assume everything is always provoked, but there really has been a group of Black Bloc kids only showing up to the marches, destroying things so aimlessly that it hardly qualifies as a 'tactic', basically rendering useless anything of value accomplished

Chris S, Monday, 6 February 2012 22:24 (twelve years ago) link

and I think tactically-speaking, a diversity of tactics, if meaning tactics that contradict each other symbolically, is dysfunctional. house divided against itself etc

Chris S, Monday, 6 February 2012 22:26 (twelve years ago) link

diversity in all other respects is good, but a unified movement can't be both violent and nonviolent. you have to pick one.
