I guess I need to add that it's an admiring, very very platonic sort of love.

Feel like I'm gonna hate Joffrey even more this season

haha yes you will

The actor who plays him has ruined Batman Begins for me, because I end up thinking Batman is an asshole for saving a child who is clearly pure evil.

Nicole, Thursday, 9 February 2012 21:53 (twelve years ago) link

Hating Joffrey is like an absolute condition already...like pregnancy, or death.

A bunch of still from the new season

I think Ramsay Bolton is the only character more hateable than Joffrey, but he's not in it yet.

Nicole, Thursday, 9 February 2012 21:59 (twelve years ago) link

i have no doubt Michael McElhatton is going to kill at as Roose Bolton

The red woman and Stannis look great.
One of my friends alerted me to a tvtropes page of wild guesses for the series, worth a look for lols. Plenty of spoilers obviously.

Reading Storm of Swords, Dany's arc is so fuckin bad-ass in this one so far.

Inevitable stupid samba mix (chap), Thursday, 9 February 2012 23:31 (twelve years ago) link

I've been powering through the books over the last several months and am just about to wrap up Dance with Dragons, but I haven't seen the tv show yet. I asked for the blu-ray set for a birthday present, but my wife thinks I'm crazy for wanting to own it.

What do you think? Is it worth it? Does it have re-watchability?

Moodles, Friday, 10 February 2012 00:00 (twelve years ago) link

I've watched the series 3 times through all the way through. The second time through clarified a lot of things (I totally missed that those were dragon skulls) and the third time was fun. Good rewatchability imo.

i think as far as the books v the tv show goes, i've discovered that having to see sansa's face while she goes through all this shit makes me not think she deserves it all quite so much

more like slayla (NZA), Friday, 10 February 2012 01:09 (twelve years ago) link

You think she deserves it?

Nicole, Friday, 10 February 2012 01:11 (twelve years ago) link

Sansa's really sympathetic on the page once you get past Ned's death.

Inevitable stupid samba mix (chap), Friday, 10 February 2012 01:18 (twelve years ago) link

i thought she deserved it right up until the point where joffrey took her out on the wall to see her father's head (shit did that happen by this point in the tv series? i don't remember), and from that point on she is pretty much the only character i truly feel sorry for

more like slayla (NZA), Friday, 10 February 2012 01:20 (twelve years ago) link

everyone else in some way or other is capable of defending themselves (this makes me feel WORSE for her btw)

more like slayla (NZA), Friday, 10 February 2012 01:21 (twelve years ago) link

really wanted Sansa to push Joffrey off that raised walkway. I think I'm totally gonna feel bad for her this next season. Actually I'm going to feel bad for everybody who has to deal with Joffrey.

Janet Snakehole (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 10 February 2012 04:22 (twelve years ago) link

He's kinda cute in a sullen way.

Stannis looks exactly as I pictured him from the books.

adolf jingle bells (latebloomer), Friday, 10 February 2012 04:47 (twelve years ago) link

Liam Cuningham is perfect for Davos as well.

The one big miscasting step they've made so far, which I've been realising more as I've been reading the books, is Jorah Mormont. A fairly important character played by an utter ham.

Inevitable stupid samba mix (chap), Friday, 10 February 2012 05:02 (twelve years ago) link

I actually like the guy playing Jorah, he's dashing and suave. (Definitely beats casting him as a lol bear, imho.)

omar leeettle (Leee), Friday, 10 February 2012 05:05 (twelve years ago) link

hah, i like iain glen, but he's definitely a weird choice for the character. too aristocratic, too handsome. it's gonna be interesting seeing how he tackles some of the later material...

RudolfHitlerFtw (Hungry4Ass), Friday, 10 February 2012 05:06 (twelve years ago) link

To me he comes across as a guy trying way to hard to be dashing and suave. Just don't like him.

Inevitable stupid samba mix (chap), Friday, 10 February 2012 05:19 (twelve years ago) link

ive seen him in some other stuff and i think hes just like that all the time tbh

RudolfHitlerFtw (Hungry4Ass), Friday, 10 February 2012 05:25 (twelve years ago) link

You know, the one downside of having watched the show and then having read the books is that for Dany's Westerosi companions, I hear TV Jorah's voice for all of them, so for me at least Iain Glen is tapping some archetypal Trusted Advisor mojo.

omar leeettle (Leee), Friday, 10 February 2012 05:31 (twelve years ago) link

i think as far as the books v the tv show goes, i've discovered that having to see sansa's face while she goes through all this shit makes me not think she deserves it all quite so much

i don't understand this point of view at all. she's a child, she's a bit silly, she's scared. what the fuck did she do to merit what joffrey does to her? joffrey is a fucking monster. no reasoning needed.
she went to court to plead her dad's case. she didn't get stupid ned stark killed, that was all joffrey's impulsiveness.

considering the characters on offer, she is way, way down the list as far as being hateful goes.

gyac, Friday, 10 February 2012 21:06 (twelve years ago) link

and tv Jon is hot but I prefer Jaime.

gyac, Friday, 10 February 2012 21:07 (twelve years ago) link

The way Sansa treats Arya in the first book borders on horrible, right up to the point when all of the actually horrible people step up and say "no see, this is how it's actually done". It's more a recalibration of scale and expectations than Sansa really "deserving" any of the things that happen to her.

I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Friday, 10 February 2012 21:07 (twelve years ago) link

Sansa is horrible to Arya the way sisters are horrible to each other. She starts off as less sympathetic than her sister, sure. But Arya turns into kind of a weird psycho and she doesn't (nb, I really like Arya).

Inevitable stupid samba mix (chap), Saturday, 11 February 2012 06:24 (twelve years ago) link

no spoilers!!!

encarta it (Gukbe), Saturday, 11 February 2012 06:27 (twelve years ago) link

I mean I know that's vague and all but let's just be careful.

encarta it (Gukbe), Saturday, 11 February 2012 06:27 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, sorry.

Inevitable stupid samba mix (chap), Saturday, 11 February 2012 06:28 (twelve years ago) link

I've only seen the first season, and I've never read the books, but my take on Sansa was that she was totally into the 'being a princess' idea and all her shittiness came from there. I felt much more sympathy after Ned died.

But Sansa is really great because it provided one of my favourite moments, which was her saying she didn't want Joffrey to be noble and great and worthy and the subsequent look and smile Ned and Arya gave each other.

encarta it (Gukbe), Saturday, 11 February 2012 06:38 (twelve years ago) link

i think people find sansa dislikeable because she is written as oblivious and stupid to a remarkable degree

really all the kids are written as already being little adults or have arcs where they mature in completely random, arbitrary ways. actually there's one big exception to that, and he's the one who doesn't get to be pov, which makes an unfortunate kind of sense.

desperado, rough rider (thomp), Saturday, 11 February 2012 12:34 (twelve years ago) link

she is her father's daughter - naive and way too trusting.
