La Lechera, Monday, 6 February 2012 16:52 (twelve years ago) link

holy cow zebulon is gonna be packed for that show. not a big place with most of the floor taken up by tables.

one dis leads to another (ian), Monday, 6 February 2012 16:54 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah the LPR date is tempting for that reason...

Axolotl with an Atlatl (Jon Lewis), Monday, 6 February 2012 17:31 (twelve years ago) link

Whoa, thanks for that Six Organs link/reference. Gonna go try to get that right now. Chasny is always good, but I really dug his trio tour with Moloney and Keith Wood, some really good takes on the songs and some heavy playing. Haven't seen him electric in a long time.

grandavis, Monday, 6 February 2012 17:35 (twelve years ago) link

I haven't heard that electric Six Organs in awhile, but I remember thinking that it sounded like White Heaven or something else PSF Records would put out. This is high praise.

InternationalWaters, Monday, 6 February 2012 19:58 (twelve years ago) link

yeah excited to listen. i gather that's the comets on fire dude's blog?

tylerw, Monday, 6 February 2012 20:01 (twelve years ago) link

It reminds me of International Harvester/Träd, Gräs & Stenar. Really spaced out and loose but organic and natural sounding too. I love it!

Laura Lucy Lynn (La Lechera), Monday, 6 February 2012 20:01 (twelve years ago) link

It is really good! Listened to two out of the three before work got in the way, but totally worth it. It is Ethan's blog, who is the Comets/Howlin' Rain guy.

grandavis, Monday, 6 February 2012 20:42 (twelve years ago) link

So, is there a new electric Six Organs record with the Comets dudes in the band? I'll have to listen to the archival one, too.

Six Organs came through here on that trio tour, but at the last minute Ben decided to do a solo acoustic set. I was a little disappointed but the Hush Arbors songs he and Moloney sat in on were really awesome.

Trip Maker, Monday, 6 February 2012 20:48 (twelve years ago) link

New Howlin' Rain record soon too!

Gonjasufjanstephen O'Malley (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 6 February 2012 20:49 (twelve years ago) link

Man, missed the Hush Arbors set that night, AND the CD I bought from him did not play. Great dude though. Played bass in that trio format, was a good format, lots of room for Chasny to do his thing.

grandavis, Monday, 6 February 2012 21:36 (twelve years ago) link

Bummer the cd didn't work. He's a good old friend o mine.

Trip Maker, Monday, 6 February 2012 21:39 (twelve years ago) link

I am sure he woulda been bummed about it too, not something I am too concerned about (happy to give him some $$ to support the cause). I am good buddies with his friend Jason Ajemian, I am confident he is an A+ dude.

grandavis, Monday, 6 February 2012 21:53 (twelve years ago) link

Jason is rad! They came through town a year ago and we had some really great times.

sorry, Rangda thread

Trip Maker, Monday, 6 February 2012 21:56 (twelve years ago) link

video from last week - http://vimeo.com/38110023
anybody seen 'em on this tour?

tylerw, Thursday, 8 March 2012 18:07 (twelve years ago) link

Saw both shows in NY. New stuff is great and they threw in a few older tracks. I wish they had more time to play together and jam out, they were definitely playing "rigid" songs/compositions. But it's always a pleasure to see them. They are headed to Black Dirty studios (there now?) to record the second LP.

Badmotorfinger Debate Club (MFB), Thursday, 8 March 2012 18:08 (twelve years ago) link

nice, yeah, judging from the live recordings I've heard, they aren't all that improv-y, considering their respective improv-y backgrounds. no biggie though, they sound magnificent.

tylerw, Thursday, 8 March 2012 18:14 (twelve years ago) link

Black Dirt, not Black Dirty obvs.

Both shows were p. underattended with moderately disinterested audiences (first show I heard someone say "I feel like they could do this in their sleep") which was a real shocker to me since this group definitely falls under "What's NOT to love?!"

Badmotorfinger Debate Club (MFB), Thursday, 8 March 2012 18:18 (twelve years ago) link

son of a bitch I totally forgot about these god damn shows DAMMIT!

Axolotl with an Atlatl (Jon Lewis), Thursday, 8 March 2012 18:49 (twelve years ago) link

unforgivable imo, jon.
too bad about the audience! weird. these guys should be hailed as gods wherever they play!

tylerw, Thursday, 8 March 2012 18:57 (twelve years ago) link

Fuck, wish they had come to my neck of the woods. Can't understand what could be boring about seeing great players playing great.

grandavis, Thursday, 8 March 2012 21:04 (twelve years ago) link

Hah, Chasny playing a white strat in that video clip. Cool!

grandavis, Thursday, 8 March 2012 21:05 (twelve years ago) link

Wow, just wanna follow up and say that that video is awesome! Love the solo and the anthemic closing part of the song. Want to see these guys, hope more dates follow the record (silly for them not to I imagine, but these guys all have so many things going on).

grandavis, Thursday, 8 March 2012 21:27 (twelve years ago) link

yeah considering how side project happy these dudes all are, it wouldn't be surprising if rangda was a one-off, but i'm glad as hell it isn't!

tylerw, Thursday, 8 March 2012 21:31 (twelve years ago) link

It was awesome to see Chasny playing like that. The next Six Organs has Comets on Fire as the backing band and is already recorded - cannot WAIT for that.

Badmotorfinger Debate Club (MFB), Thursday, 8 March 2012 21:44 (twelve years ago) link

I am glad it isn't as well. But I could see them NOT touring for the record, just cause they do other stuff. These shows may be it for a while, but hopefully not.

I guess I am psyched for Comets guys on the next record, but I do not want anything that sounds like Howlin Rain. Will trust that it will just sound like rocking Six Organs, which I am ALL for. Especially if there is a tour for it. Last few times I have seen Chasny it has been solo or with Elisa, which were great shows, but it has been a long time since I have seen him with a band.

Okay, we have word...

For the second flight of the shadowy witch-god brothers, Rangda have changed their status from False Flag to Formerly Extinct! Since the last album, Rangda, the trio consisting of Sir Richard Bishop, Ben Chasney, and Chris Corsano, has been all around this world as the wise men and the fools alike, in lands both high and low. They’ve seen the young and invest-less kneel amp-side, waiting for musical succor, then in the next town over they’ve felt the cold chill of being left for dead and seen their music dubbed ‘so wrong it must be Rangda’ strictly for some local pen-lifter’s personal chuckles.

These songs, newfangled and shrouded by ancestral awakenings, bore deep into the layers of consciousness to divine meeting. Take “Manjun,” for instance. Everybody always talks about Layla, but when does anyone ever pull Majnun out the hat? Enter Rangda with sympathy for the obsessed. To them, the Persian wanna-be lover of classical lit and lore is worth more consideration than George Harrison’s ex-wife! That's the way the Rangda madness lies. There’s no value among the flies of the marketplace – unless you find a copy of Rangda’s latest there. Formerly Extinct lives large, no matter how small the arch overhead, and is available for your decent into lunacy on September 18th via Drag City.

FORMERLY EXTINCT TRACKLISTING:
1. Idol’s Eye
2. The Vault
3. Silver Nile
4. Plugged Nickel
5. Manjun
6. Goodbye Mr. Gentry
7. Tres Hambres
8. Night Porter

speaking of, super anticipating the six organs release in august!!

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

nicest bitch of poster (La Lechera), Monday, 23 July 2012 21:28 (eleven years ago) link

yes! would be cool if rangda did a package tour thing, like a SRB solo set, a 6 organs set and then a massive Rangda jammmm.

tylerw, Monday, 23 July 2012 21:30 (eleven years ago) link

maybe a little solo corsano as an appetizer for the early birds

nicest bitch of poster (La Lechera), Monday, 23 July 2012 21:31 (eleven years ago) link

book it! someone!

tylerw, Monday, 23 July 2012 21:37 (eleven years ago) link

ogmor, Tuesday, 24 July 2012 21:18 (eleven years ago) link

Playing Cardiff soon, I'm definitely going this time after missing them last time.

nate woolls, Tuesday, 24 July 2012 21:19 (eleven years ago) link

So, so, so excited for new stuff from these dudes! Fwiw I really liked the design of the last cover, but the new one looks like a rejected Gang Gang Dance or w/e cover.
