haha i just got a 0 on a larger order than that, but it happens all the time in catering/deliveries. i would much rather get an asshole like that (i never have) than the usual people who jump through all sorts of hoops to not own up to the fact that they're screwing you over.

businessmen otoh are typically pretty good with tipping (esp when there's someone around to impress or they're signing on an account that isn't theirs) but they are the worst human beings to ever have to deal with in a restaurant. children, all of them.

i know ppl usually meant well, but when i was a waitress i would often get ppl asking me "so what else do you do?", as if they thought that waitressing FT was not an option. and sometimes, even when i would reply "uh i waitress full time", ppl would still insist "yeah but WHAT ELSE do you do??" "NOTHING bc running around a non-airconditioned restaurant for 40 hrs a week without breaks is really fucking exhausting".

it's still astonishing in the big picture, we have some people who are so good at growing food that everyone else just gets to sit at desks or walk around and do things for other people all day, and somehow it works out

The only complaint I've ever heard is when you give them a handful of coins while ordering a drink at a busy bar. Otherwise, it's all legal tender.

Whenever my mom got dollar coins as waitressing tips, she would hoard them away in a sock, which I never understood at all. So if you're giving them to people like my mom, you're giving them money they'll never spend. I think it's unusual behavior, though.

I pulled the whole two-dollar bill thing for awhile. I knew when I was going out, I was going to tip, and I knew that I was going to tip more than one dollar. Might as well save room in my wallet.

I picked up a bunch of dollar coins at one point for tipping and random use. May do so again, but it won't be as cool as the ones I got with Millard Fillmore on them.

for a salon service like that i'd tip 15% - 25%, but no less than $10.

always thought it was on the post-tax but noticed the other day on the bill it had a suggested amount, which was 20% of the pre-tax

Huh, I've always gone with post-tax just because that's the big number at the bottom of the check. I guess pre-tax probably makes more sense in the abstract, but, eh, servers gotta pay tax on stuff too, I don't mind the difference. Or is there really high tax on food where you are? It seems like 15-20% of 5-10% is kind of a trivial number, compared to the price of the food.

tipping is on pre-tax, but generally the kind of people who care aren't tipping so well anyway

Anyway, I buy coffee at a local coffee shop. Two bags, in which I ask them to ground for french press. Total comes in to about $42. On top of that, they give me a free coffee drink, which I usually get a latte. How much would you tip on this?

Hmm. I don't buy bulk coffee so I'm not sure. The grinding is something they kind of normally do, but feels a little "extra" right? My gut would say to tip something around the price of what the free drink would have cost.

If the grinding is something they normally do for customers as a service, I don't think it needs to be tipped at all tbqh
