Danny Brown - incredible rapper obv but a weird pick for xxl, aside from being north of 30 years old he's not in any way interested in the kind of mainstream radio rap career these guys are usually thinking of & i feel like in some ways hes kind of peaking now in terms of the attention he's being given. should have another good year or two of critical glow & I'm sure he'll end up winning this poll.

Don Trip - this guy is pretty likeable & has some good music, I like Starlito more than him though. While I like letter to my son there's something a little ... *strokes beard* "i see..." abt the way ppl have rallied around it, i mean its fine that folks are feeling the resonant emotion but there's something a lil schlocky in the one-sidedness of custody battles which, as a non-parent & child of divorce, sets off alarm bells for me personally

French Montana - This guy earned this, & it feels like an obvious pick.
Future - ditto French
Hopsin - I think this makes a surprising amount of sense, mostly b/c of the tech n9ne affiliation which ensures he'll get the proper support & $$$, he's kind of a more marketable, skilled OF

Iggy Azalea - get the fuck out with this bullshit
Kid Ink - between Tyga and Wiz Khalifa I don't personally see there being enough oxygen for this
Machine Gun Kelly - I would actually defend this one, "Wild Boy" is a legit hit & if you needed a white boy for the cover you could do a lot worse
Macklemore - GTFO
Roscoe Dash - what year is this? has he had a hit since "No Hands"?

surprised Kirko Bangs didn't make this list. Also, @z@3liA B@NkS

Roscoe Dash - what year is this? has he had a hit since "No Hands"?

i think the label is (or was) finally preparing to put his EP out so they probably twisted some arms to get him on this

Roscoe Dash - what year is this? has he had a hit since "No Hands"?

isn't "good fucking night" a hit?

dare i ask what a Iggy Azalea is?

a hoy hoy, Tuesday, 28 February 2012 19:45 (twelve years ago) link

az banks still seems a bit out of xxl's purview imo

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 28 February 2012 19:45 (twelve years ago) link

brainwasher otm about kirko bangz. and he sounds exactly like drake, too.

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 28 February 2012 19:46 (twelve years ago) link

i gave iggy azalea's mixtape a listen, she can rap but i didn't hear anything particularly special about her

lex pretend, Tuesday, 28 February 2012 19:47 (twelve years ago) link

kirko bangz is maybe the worst rap name in history

what's a goon to garbus (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 28 February 2012 19:48 (twelve years ago) link

kirko bangz is a surprising omission but i thought his tape was mostly boring

also tha joker... is he a thing?

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 28 February 2012 19:50 (twelve years ago) link

i'm legit stunned that she has management and stuff. i really thought she was a random foreigner trying to sound like she was from atlanta.

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 28 February 2012 19:50 (twelve years ago) link

isn't that exactly what she is?

lex pretend, Tuesday, 28 February 2012 19:52 (twelve years ago) link

i have no idea why anyone would think she was marketable.

i don't get why it's so ridiculous w/her though, she hasn't put anything great out yet but she's no worse than half this list every year

what is a good french montana mixtape? have obv seen his name around a ton but have never noticed his music really

lex pretend, Tuesday, 28 February 2012 19:54 (twelve years ago) link

'coke boys 2' from last year, 'coke wave' with max b

"marvin gaye & chardonnay" was, if not "no hands"-level huge, still a pretty big hit and a R&B #1, and "oh my" was successful too. it's weird to think how many hits someone can have over a couple years and be on this list just because they haven't dropped an album.

french montana is about sleepiness conveying being drunk/stoned etc where as gudda gudda is about mumbling as a way to mask talent

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 28 February 2012 20:08 (twelve years ago) link

i really would be interested in seeing those 10 mcs that missed the cut in 08

gist?

gyac, Tuesday, 28 February 2012 20:15 (twelve years ago) link

bollocks

gyac, Tuesday, 28 February 2012 20:15 (twelve years ago) link

it was primarily about the lame IRA posturing in the song

Number None, Tuesday, 28 February 2012 20:18 (twelve years ago) link

I like the first coke boys tape more than coke boys 2, french is a good rapper w a distinct style and persona and an ear for hooks. Hes also, like Future, a no-brainer on this list bc hes already hitting.

Lol @ lex defending iggy azalea dude shes just awful

D-40, Tuesday, 28 February 2012 20:19 (twelve years ago) link

lex listen to "shot caller" at least

Peace (peaceful) (The Brainwasher), Tuesday, 28 February 2012 20:20 (twelve years ago) link

the one iggy azalea song posted in gun sounds was pretty hot but obv she's pretty reprehensible overall

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 28 February 2012 20:20 (twelve years ago) link

Stay schemin is a great hook ... Tell me when gudda gudda ever releases something that catchy

D-40, Tuesday, 28 February 2012 20:21 (twelve years ago) link

Which song, jordan?

D-40, Tuesday, 28 February 2012 20:22 (twelve years ago) link

i don't remember, no fake forgetfulness -- i'm sure it was her "big hit" or w/e

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 28 February 2012 20:23 (twelve years ago) link

i think that happened a minute ago, radio was calling him that when they started playing that stupid "wild boy" song. it is funny to see every rapper ever with an especially violent or vulgar name get their shit switched up the moment they have a real career or are trying to.

some dude, Sunday, 18 March 2012 00:57 (twelve years ago) link

yeah i just noticed it now since i guess he's getting a bit of a push on vevo

u mean g-play

lag∞n, Sunday, 18 March 2012 15:00 (twelve years ago) link

it would be funny if the real reason that gunplay was a phantom member of MMG was because he refused to censor his name

3hunn O))) (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 18 March 2012 15:09 (twelve years ago) link

Play would be a good rapper name imo

some dude, Sunday, 18 March 2012 16:58 (twelve years ago) link
