Take this with a grain of comforting salt, but I read something in the Seattle Times yesterday that Northwest operations should be "normal" despite the strike. Then again, that's what Alaska Air said a year ago, and I've gotten delays on every flight by them for the last year. But I got to my destinations, at least, and not too incredibly late. So, I'd just expect delays, the usual, to be on the safe side.

donut gon' nut (donut), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 22:19 (eighteen years ago) link

Oy. Check your options for all other airlines flying from Memphis to Seattle. Print out a list of their flight numbers if possible and have it ready. At the first sign of trouble, get thee to a Northwest rep with your handy list and start requesting they put you on another airline. They'll only do this if they actually cancel your flight.

Jaq (Jaq), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 22:25 (eighteen years ago) link

Charlotte/Seattle seems to be a popular hub for U.S. Airways (who I only flew with once, but I thought they were great.). I'm guessing, worst case scenario, you could hop on a quick flight to Charlotte, and connect via U.S. Airways from there. Again, worst case scenario.. but there's at least one option.

donut gon' nut (donut), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 22:44 (eighteen years ago) link

Charlotte/Douglas!!

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 22:54 (eighteen years ago) link

On the bright side, I'm flying nonstop both ways, so I don't have to worry about a delay causing me to miss a connecting flight.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 23:31 (eighteen years ago) link

So, FAP on 9/9 or 9/10 anyone?

Jaq (Jaq), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 16:00 (eighteen years ago) link

I wish, but I'm on an early flight to SF the morning of the 10th, so that kills both the 9th and 10th for me.

donut Get Behind Me Carbon Dioxide (donut), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 16:08 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah yeah yeah! I may or may not need extra pints depending on how NWA treats me in transit.

This is the most unplanned trip I've ever taken, I think. I'm really just going to be flying in and figuring out things from there, although I am planning to show up for the Stapleton DJ set on Sunday. Most of my brain cells are given over to trying to decide whether I want to buy an iPod in time to take with me.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 16:11 (eighteen years ago) link

Oh say yes to the iPod! Or some such device. And some noise-cancelling headphones too.

Are you for or against sushi?

Jaq (Jaq), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 16:17 (eighteen years ago) link

And bring a jacket/sweater - it was chilly in the evenings this past weekend (in the 50s).

Jaq (Jaq), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 16:19 (eighteen years ago) link

I am completely pro-sushi. A friend and I went out and stuffed ourselves full of sushi and Belgian beer in Atlanta Friday night — he's been deprived because his wife's pregnant and they've been avoiding the sushi places. I had sea urchin for the first time.

I'm excited about going somewhere cool for a week. If it's down into the 50s, I may go streaking. (Not.)

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 16:46 (eighteen years ago) link

Donut and Matos, weeknight meetup? Angels @ Mariners? Milkshakes and cow-tipping?

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 8 September 2005 21:57 (eighteen years ago) link

Next week is looking good for a weeknight meet up.. After the 11th. I'm painfully busy until then unfortunately.

donut Get Behind Me Carbon Dioxide (donut), Thursday, 8 September 2005 22:21 (eighteen years ago) link

I don't have a laptop to take with me and I don't know how often I'll get to the interweb while I'm there, so I may not be able to visit this thread after tonight. My cell # is five-three-zero, nine-four-one, nine-five-four-nine.

I don't know where the milk shakes and cows thing came from. That sounds boring even for me.

I plan to be at the Baltic Room Sunday night.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 8 September 2005 22:34 (eighteen years ago) link

I think I'll be there too, assuming it doesn't sell out. Though I'll probably be around mainly for the Steve Stapleton dj set.

donut Get Behind Me Carbon Dioxide (donut), Thursday, 8 September 2005 22:36 (eighteen years ago) link

He's listed first for that night at the Wooden Octopus Skull website — you think those listings are in order of occurence?

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 8 September 2005 22:47 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm flying back to Seattle late afternoon on Sunday.. so, my energy permitting, I should be able to make it.. I'm just saying I can't do a dinner/FAP thing on the 11th, that's all.

donut Get Behind Me Carbon Dioxide (donut), Thursday, 8 September 2005 23:33 (eighteen years ago) link

No worries, I wasn't thinking of Sunday in those terms.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 8 September 2005 23:46 (eighteen years ago) link

Loads of fun so far and only been here a day and a half. Met up with Jaq and Gravel Puzzleworth in the "Seattle FAP of non-Seattleites" last night for sushi and just a bit of sightseeing. Can't wait for everybody to see the picture of Gravel in front of the Fremont Troll. Today, dim sum with the same crew before everybody scattered to their separate directions.

Tonight, possibly O's at Mariners... why not? But first up to the observation deck at the Bank of America bldg.

William (Logged Out), Saturday, 10 September 2005 21:14 (eighteen years ago) link

I just got back home. Still unwinding.. gotta get a meal. You guys ate at Blue C Sushi, I take it? Sounds reeeally good right now. Sorry for missing you guys, Jaq and Gravel. William.. I haven't collapsed yet, so I'll give you a call about the Steve Stapleton DJing the Baltic tonight.. I plan to get there around 10pmish. maybe a little later? Anyway, glad you're having fun! :)

donut Get Behind Me Carbon Dioxide (donut), Monday, 12 September 2005 00:23 (eighteen years ago) link

Blue C in Fremont for sushi, House of Hong for dim sum - mmmmmmm! Then over to Uwajimaya to gawk at crazy Asian produce and piles of comics, books, anime dvds, etc. Photos of Gravel (Mad Cow) Puzzleworth at the Fremont Troll will be posted once we pry them out of the camera.

Jaq (Jaq), Monday, 12 September 2005 01:35 (eighteen years ago) link

Maybe this should go on the Sept. whatcha look like thread, but here's Rock Hardy, Gravel Puzzleworth (pre-cowsuit), and Jaq at the Fremont Troll:

Jaq (Jaq), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 23:13 (eighteen years ago) link

Sorry I couldn't come. Next year in Portland!

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 23:49 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm sorry we didn't get to see you, and that we missed donut too. RJM and GP got all Joycean/Tennysonian in the car and made me glad to have not studied english lit. Rock Hardy and Gravel are both food adventurers (except for eggplant, olives, and possibly something else) and actually ate a durian popsicle!

Jaq (Jaq), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 00:51 (eighteen years ago) link

This was really really good! London invitations stand obv. and are repeated, here.

What was the Thomas Mann book in which nothing happened that someone recommended? God, that popsicle was so horrible.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 03:03 (eighteen years ago) link

I've had durian ice cream. Well, a spoonful. Threw the rest of the box out.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 03:15 (eighteen years ago) link

Yes, actually "ate" was a misstatement. "Tasted" is more like it. I wish I had had the camera ready for that. Someone said it tasted like a bad banana.

I'll check on the Thomas Mann, think it was something RJM was on about.

Jaq (Jaq), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 11:49 (eighteen years ago) link

Buddenbrooks is the one by Thomas Mann. He guarantees there are no elves. Also, he thought the Studs Lonigan trilogy by James Farrell - though lots of stuff does actually happen, it goes nowhere.

Jaq (Jaq), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 13:16 (eighteen years ago) link

I just sat down in the library to check in on this thread and my phone went off. I think it's Donut. Will call back momentarily.

That durian popsicle was some kind of nasty.

Ate at Salumi today (porchetta, fabulous) and since I was in the neighborhood and there was a day game, went to the Angels-Mariners. 10-9 final, 31 hits total. Got my money's worth, plus K-Rod (who blew up).

Ned, I was at Easy Street Records yesterday and almost bought the Fall Peel Sessions box on yr. review. The Seattle free weeklies, they're just another place where ILXors hang out, eh?

Rock Unlogged, Thursday, 15 September 2005 00:22 (eighteen years ago) link

Oh man, Salumi!

Did you see this thread? I thought the cowsuit deserved it's own.

Jaq (Jaq), Thursday, 15 September 2005 02:52 (eighteen years ago) link

Where is Greggel Puzzleworth now?? He has been gallavanting around the ooh-ess-ahh for ages!

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Thursday, 15 September 2005 03:30 (eighteen years ago) link

Home again, home again. This morning, an apple fritter and large drip from Top Pot Donuts...this evening, a gag-roll from Taco Bell. Waaaah.

Ned, I was at Easy Street Records yesterday and almost bought the Fall Peel Sessions box on yr. review

You should have, sir! Then my mission would have been complete! Or something.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 17 September 2005 02:56 (eighteen years ago) link

Glad you made it safely home, and hope the remainder of your stay in the emerald city was eventful!

Jaq (Jaq), Saturday, 17 September 2005 03:31 (eighteen years ago) link

I had a great trip. Met up with Donut at the Steve Stapleton thing, then again with Matos and Donut for Thai food (at Racha, not Thai Tom) on Wednesday.

I did a lot of walking and a lot of eating and a lot of going to baseball games and a little bit of finding interesting beers. It was so hot and humid when I got off the plane this evening I almost gagged.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Saturday, 17 September 2005 03:48 (eighteen years ago) link

Racha = most excellent.

Jaq (Jaq), Saturday, 17 September 2005 13:10 (eighteen years ago) link

Mmmm Top Pot & Salumi. You hit two of my favorite places to eat.

lyra (lyra), Saturday, 17 September 2005 14:30 (eighteen years ago) link

I did wind up getting the Fall box, Ned. When Donut suggested meeting up right across the street from Easy Street Records, I figured it was fate and/or MES calling out to me.

The porchetta was good, but I wish I'd tried one of the sausages instead. A guy sitting next to me had the meatball sandwich and it didn't look tempting. I got the seat at the very end of the table at the back, so I could watch the melee at the counter.

Downtown Seattle smells like really good barbecue.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Saturday, 17 September 2005 14:43 (eighteen years ago) link

six months pass...
revive so I don't clog up the Portland thread with Seattle recs for Morbius

while you're there, I'd consider checking out the University (U)District, including the student corridor around 45th and University Way (the Ave), with a couple of great movie theatres, the campus (with two good small museums - the Burke and the Henry), and a lake-waterfront area that includes a section of a great jogging/biking trail, the University's fish hatchery, and a great Mexican restaurant/kayak club.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 20 March 2006 17:10 (eighteen years ago) link

Also, I cannot recommend Thai Tom highly enough - really really excellent Thai food - also in the U district, just up the block from Tw1ce Sold Tales bookshop.

Jaq (Jaq), Monday, 20 March 2006 17:17 (eighteen years ago) link

(btw, I'll be in Seattle April 28 - 30 for food and fappage with any/all interested.)

Jaq (Jaq), Monday, 20 March 2006 17:21 (eighteen years ago) link

Well, I'll have even less free time in Seattle! (approx June 28-July 3) If you know where randy non-cologned gay men hang out with tolerable music playing, that wouldhelp.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 20 March 2006 17:41 (eighteen years ago) link

First Hill and Capitol Hill generally, also possibly Tubs, though there may be cologne.

Jaq (Jaq), Monday, 20 March 2006 17:43 (eighteen years ago) link

donutbitch had some massive Seattle baedeker on a thread that I can't find :(

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 20 March 2006 17:44 (eighteen years ago) link

if you do one thing in town, walk through the pike place market (grabbing some stonefruits and berries along the way, especially from sosio's (the "oh my god peach"es live up to their billing) or one of the small farm tables), walk down the hillclimb (visiting el puerco lloron and procopio) and along the waterfront and take a ferry trip, ideally leaving about 45 minutes before sunset.

the (inside of the) library is highly worthwhile.

I think Pioneer Square isn't all that exciting, but it's old and pretty in parts and has the aforementioned Salumi, the great Elliot Bay book co, and Bud's Jazz records (small, vinyl-focused).

also a good idea - take the monorail from downtown to seattle center to see the Needle and EMP. the Fun Forest amusement park is a little forlorn-looking but charming. walk around here - there's nice landscaping, sculpture and some views, as well as good architecture in the Pacific Science Center (mostly for kids, but possibly worth admission for the longhouse alone), Northwest Rooms, and the Intiman Theatre (which is quite good). from there, you can walk to the Queen Anne branch of Easy Street Records.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 20 March 2006 18:06 (eighteen years ago) link

and eat at Etta's near the market

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 20 March 2006 18:14 (eighteen years ago) link

The monorail's been closed for awhile due to fires and the two cars crashing into each other on a curve, but maybe by July they'll have it running again.

Donut's got a bunch of stuff up on 43Places.com - it's a good resource.

Jaq (Jaq), Monday, 20 March 2006 18:57 (eighteen years ago) link

the U District is also where the best producers at the market are on saturdays. also recommended - Tiny's Orchard.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 20 March 2006 19:09 (eighteen years ago) link

That trip seems like it was seven years ago instead of seven months. I told my daughter to settle in Seattle after college so I could visit her there.

pixel farmer (Rock Hardy), Monday, 20 March 2006 19:47 (eighteen years ago) link

That's an admirable plan. I can't wait to be living back over there. September can't get here soon enough.

Jaq (Jaq), Monday, 20 March 2006 19:59 (eighteen years ago) link

it's more like evangelicism

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 22:02 (eighteen years ago) link

my parents like the one in the U district, on the far side of U Village (and right by the Burke-Gilman trail), but that might be a bit too suburban in character and far-flung for the carless

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 22:04 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm assuming Morbius lives in NYC? If so, then I don't think a few blocks of an incline is going to be a deterrant, especially given how much lighter and more comfortable Seattle weather will be like in late June compared to NYC in late June.

Yoo Doo Nut (donut), Wednesday, 22 March 2006 03:21 (eighteen years ago) link

Then again, I regularly walk up and down Queen Anne Hill, some parts of which have to be at a 40 degree incline... so maybe I'm not the best person with which to empathize.. heh heh.

Yoo Doo Nut (donut), Wednesday, 22 March 2006 03:24 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah, what I remember of walking around in NYC, it was f.l.a.t. Queen Anne hill is 456 feet of near vertical, though the regrade cut on Denny is more steep.

Jaq (Jaq), Wednesday, 22 March 2006 04:07 (eighteen years ago) link

Fuck a Queen Anne Hill slope. That is horrible stuff.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 22 March 2006 06:28 (eighteen years ago) link

Well anyway, the Broadway incline to Silver Cloud isn't anywhere near Queen Anne Hill type slopes, Morbius... and it won't be 90% humidity here.

Yoo Doo Nut (donut), Wednesday, 22 March 2006 07:27 (eighteen years ago) link

No Chris, I'm taking things sequentially, feel free to recommend the non-twink Portland stuff. :)

Jeez, the baseball con basics are more expensive than last year ... I may stay downtown just for convenience, and hike it to the DoubleHeader, Eagle etc. (yes I'm in NYC, and I hike the hills of SF fairly easily when I go.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 22 March 2006 15:44 (eighteen years ago) link

Not a Seattle-centric revive, but -- I'm going to get in my truck and wander the country for a few days next week. Anybody east of the Mississippi want to meet up?

Definitely around for a September meet up - I head back to AL on 9/27 though and might have a weekend free for possible MS or Atlanta shenanigans.

Jaq, Monday, 1 September 2014 17:36 (nine years ago) link

One insane idea I had was going to Seattle for one of the King Crimson shows. Trip could involve going to the San Jose (Morgan Hill) area to meet up with my boss (travel expense writeoff!) -- she has a ton of small office chores and workflow issues due to being a semi-Luddite with a 12-year-old laptop.

Malibu Stasi (WilliamC), Monday, 1 September 2014 17:50 (nine years ago) link

I'm gonna be in Seattle on and off for a few weeks leading up to then, I guarantee drink-uppening getting organised if you do go

boney tassel (sic), Tuesday, 2 September 2014 06:59 (nine years ago) link

Welp, looks like this may be off. The work trip is pushed back to next Feb. or March, at least, and my relaxed September is getting busier every hour.

Malibu Stasi (WilliamC), Saturday, 6 September 2014 02:42 (nine years ago) link

Ah well. Spring is nice and maybe you could be here for the EMP pop conference.
