ugh. the only phaser i liked was the rotovibe. otherwise it's always screamed 70's the way chorus screams 80's.

I'd say maybe reverse gated reverb, only Brad Laner and Kevin Sheilds ever did anything interesting with it, and consider the source, Phil Collins/Hugh Padgham/Peter Gabriel, uncool!

mzui (mzui), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 14:24 (eighteen years ago) link

Technically a flanger is a special case of a phaser, and chorus is a special case of a flanger... part and parcel and all that...

I'm trying really hard not to launch into the physics lesson to which I'm making reference. ;)

i think if plug-ins count, winner is AUTOTUNE!!!!

am0n, Wednesday, 2 November 2005 15:40 (eighteen years ago) link

There's a hardware version of autotune too...

and I think you may be right.

I think a clear winner is starting to emerge...

Nobody has even mentioned any stupid effects yet!

This thread is offensive.

what about those 'acoustic' pedals that are supposed to simulate an acoustic guitar sound from electric guitars? i've never actually heard one, but the whole idea sounds pretty stupid.

Phaser is the best pedal ever. To the point where I have played only using a sampler, delay, chorus, phaser, ring mod and overdrive.

"only"

if it's any consolation, i do own two flangers. and really, one of them is sort of not stupid. (digital ibanez flanger from early 80's)

6335, Thursday, 3 November 2005 02:06 (eighteen years ago) link

yeah, the acoustic simulators are all pretty crap.

AaronK (AaronK), Thursday, 3 November 2005 13:26 (eighteen years ago) link

i saw an ad recently for an Autotune type effect, but specifically for drums, like fixing drum hits automatically and such (i forget the name, but it was in recent issue of TapeOp). imo "instant perfection" shit like this is by definition stupid.

Was it called Alsihad?

sitar swami?

Roxymuzak, Mrs. Carbohydrate (roxymuzak), Thursday, 3 November 2005 17:50 (eighteen years ago) link

That "sitar simulator" pedal is actually some kinda weird take on a phaser, and since phasers are the best effects ever...

I've never heard anyone get that thing to actually sound like a sitar though, so that's kinda stupid, yeah.

xxpost - well its a ProTools plugin. it's called TL Drum Rehab

TL Drum Rehab provides engineers and mixers with precise enhancement of drum tracks in real-time, regardless of performance, equipment or recording limitations in the original track. The state of the art TL Drum Rehab interface offers a wide choice of processing, ranging from subtle enhancement of existing drums through to automatic replacement of entire drum tracks, creating a flawless masterpiece from a less than perfect percussion track.

am0n, Thursday, 3 November 2005 20:53 (eighteen years ago) link

tl drum rehab is vapourware. the software you're thinking of is Drumagog and by all accounts it's excellent (yet to try it out myself tho)

john p. irrelevant (electricsound), Friday, 4 November 2005 00:56 (eighteen years ago) link

it's not so much about "instant perfection" as it doesn't time-correct the hits. it's a more sophisticated sound replacement module.

john p. irrelevant (electricsound), Friday, 4 November 2005 00:57 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah, Drumagog is more for taking an existing and presumably good performance and fixing, say, the shit sound of the kick by systematically replacing the kick hits with a different sound sample of a kick that sounds the way you'd like it to.

The only problem with Drumagog is if you replace with samples across the board you obviously lose some nuance, especially if your drummer does a lot with ghost notes and stuff. (I guess you could replace very selectively with several different samples per drum to keep those inflections, but it'd obviously be more tedious.)

I've never used Drumagog because all the drums on my stuff are fake (done in Battery), but I know a lot of engineers who regularly use it in cases where the kit sound is less than stellar but the performance is good.

martin m. (mushrush), Friday, 4 November 2005 17:10 (eighteen years ago) link

nah i found the ad, it was def. drum rehab i was thinking of. the ad has this ridiculous picture of a frustrated drummer. but you say vapourware.. it doesn't exist yet?

drumagog sounds interesting.

am0n, Friday, 4 November 2005 20:44 (eighteen years ago) link

yeah drum rehab was announced and no more was heard.. it's become a little bit of a running joke on some of the pro audio forums..

what would be the most inappropriate and fucked up thing to run a "sitar swami" through? (n.b. I do not own a sitar swami, but I like this idea)
